Title: Official RPG chat.
The rattled mind of bob - October 15, 2004 11:35 PM (GMT)
Welcome to the RPG Information Center. In here you can talk about your favorite RPG's, ask questions about an upcoming games or if you're stuck on a part of a game, share information on upcoming RPG's, or chat about classic RPG's with people who share the same interests. If it has anything to do with RPG's, it'll fit right in here. Maybe after a while I'll even start up some trivia. Even if it's only me and a few others chatting in here, I'm still going to keep it going. The main reason being that as the site expands, so will the RPG fans who join here.
I'll try to get some discussion off by asking for your top RPG's of all time list, and what you thought made them so great?
Enjoy!!
screenshark15 - October 16, 2004 02:54 AM (GMT)
Why didn't you just change the name of the other thread?
The rattled mind of bob - October 16, 2004 02:58 AM (GMT)
I guess I didn't really think about it. Anyway, it's pointless to think about that now.
Post away!
screenshark15 - October 16, 2004 03:10 AM (GMT)
now we just have to get a conversation going...
I guess for starters we could have people post their top 5 RPGs so we know what they like
here are mine (no particular order)
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy IX
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy IV
Xenosaga
The rattled mind of bob - October 16, 2004 03:14 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I always love to chat about RPG's.
Nice list, screen.
Here's mine in no particular order:
FFX
FFVIII
FFVII
Xenosaga
Suikoden 3
I don't know if you'd consider KOTOR an RPG, but if it is, it'd be close to being on my list.
screenshark15 - October 16, 2004 03:19 AM (GMT)
Actually yeah, I think it's classified as an action RPG (though I haven't ever played it so I wouldn't know) . In that case, replace Xenosaga for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on my list, I completely forgot to include Zelda as an RPG.
The rattled mind of bob - October 16, 2004 03:28 AM (GMT)
That's a good thought. In my case, I'd have to replace Suikoden simply because I loved the style in which Xenosaga was made. It was so cut-scene heavy, and it did a really good job of pulling you in with the characters. By the time I beat it, my curiosity of the characters had only just been caught, leaving me in eager anticipation of Episode two.
But Zelda still is a great game. I'd buy a Gamecube only to get the new one...whenever it comes out. It truly innovated RPG's as we knew them. Aside from FFVII, it's the first game that really had an epic feel to it. IMO.
Refluxe - October 16, 2004 10:57 AM (GMT)
Ahh, well about 90% of my games are RPG and I have alot of them so I'll be posting here somewhat. Anyway, as it stands, I currently do not possess Final Fantasy. Heh, in fact I've only ever played on one of them. Despite being such a fan of RPG's that kinda sounds weird but meh. I will however, be getting it/them/some for Christmas.
Alrighty then, my top list of RPG's. I'm not sure I can fit it in five or any order as I have so many I enjoy:
Neverwinter Nights (The whole series, possibly one I play the most.)
Baldurs Gate (The whole series, although not as good as Icewind Dale by my perspective, they are great.)
Icewind Dale (The whole series, they're simply just brilliant. A game that I love to play again to re-develop my characters.)
Dungeon Siege. (Both of them. I know they may get repetitive but I sometimes can't put them down! I play with my sister as well and she sucks at it so I have to help her out. Great fun.)
TESIII: Morrowind. (The best game for exploration, my god is it big. So much fun on this, I sat on it all day once. Love it.)
Ultima Online. (The only game I pay for monthly to play it online. I've been playing it for about 3 and a half years now and soon to come out is another new expansion!)
Ultima. (Not just online but the collection is one of the best RPG series to exist.)
Star Wars: KOTOR (Was a game I didn't think I'd like but it's really good. Maybe a little too linear but enjoyable non the less.)
Diablo (The first wasn't brilliant and got repetitive but they're amazing to play.)
FALLOUT 1,2 (Alright, maybe one of the best I've ever played. I love it because it's not just set in some fantasy world, it's futuristic and very fun to play. I hope Bethesda do a good job on the third.)
Want some classics? Where to begin...
Chrono Trigger. (My god, a game that is eternally brilliant. I've just done a Media Project on it. Amazing.)
Sailor Moon. (Strange but fun)
Earthbound. (fu**ing strange again but another top game I enjoyed on the SNES. Not set in the fantasy world.)
Illusions Of Gaia. (Hardly remember it but it was great.)
Secret Of Mana. (Same as above.)
Terranigma. (A legendary RPG, nearly where Chrono is. Worth a play.)
Okay, now games that I'm looking forward to:
Ultima Online: Samurai Empire. (Yeah! Buy it and you get all the other expansions with it. I just can't wait for this!)
Fable. (Well, I'll be getting it on the PC when it comes out. I have to say it looks fun.)
Dragon Age. (Oh dear god, this is a MUST to look at. NWN but 10 times better? This can't be true. Just take a look, it will make you cry.)
Fallout 3(One and Two became the best I've ever played and I hope that Bethesda do a good job on the third otherwise I will be VERY unhappy.)
Well, I've probably missed quite a few out but those are the things that came to my head. They're all amazing to play...
DaEagle - October 16, 2004 04:28 PM (GMT)
My favorite rpg's
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2 (never beated)
Hack1
Hack2 (havent'beat it yet.)
Pokemon blue
pokemon gold (the show might be sorry but the game is the best thing they got)

Very good list, 'fluxe. As you already know, I love KOTOR too. The ability to control everything your character says was really loads of fun. The replay value of the game is really tremendous too.
If you're going to get FF game, here's what I have to say about FFVII-FFX-2.
FFVII--This game is arguably the greatest RPG of all time. This game defined epic for an RPG, and offered some of the unique gameplay, for the time it was released, anyway. The story still is my favorite for a FF game.
FFVIII--The was the first FF game to have realistic looking character models. In FFVII, the characters were short and had big heads (not that it was a problem), but in FFVIII the models looked more like actual humans. I really enjoyed playing this game as there's a lot to do besides follow the story along. The story for the game was excellent, as well.
FFIX--This game was thoroughly enjoyable from the start. It had a good story, great CGI and solid graphics for the time it was released. Out of all the FF games released, I'd say that the battle system in IX was the one I like the least. It's not that it wasn't good, but I just wasn't really feeling it. It's still a real good game though.
FFX--Perhaps my favorite FF game, it was the first one in the series to incorporate voice acting. The voice acting was solid, and it fit the characters really well. Aside from Onimusha, this game has the best CGI I've ever seen. It really was incredible. I like the battle system a whole lot. It's not as fast paced as the other FF games, but it was still fun to use. It was also the first FF game (that I know of) where you could switch characters in and out of battle, during battle. And that is a very useful feature. I loved it. The story was very solid, and it really draws you in to the characters.
FFX-2-- The first direct sequel in the series' history. This game was a departure from what all FF fans were used to. It's the first game to have all the main characters as female. Some folks didn't like all the changes, but I wasn't one of the. As a departure from the dramatic FF games of the past, this game had more of a light and funny feel to it. The story was fairly solid, though, as I mentioned, didn't pack the dramatics of the previous titles. There a few dramatic parts, though, and it turned out to be a pretty cool game.
It's a great time to get involved with Final Fantasy because you can get all those games for a really good price.
FFXII will be coming out next year, and thus far, it's looking fantastic. I'll do a little mini preview a bit later.
@DaEagle, nice list. What are the Hack games like??
Refluxe - October 16, 2004 08:01 PM (GMT)
Big thanks for that TRMOB. Sounds good. I'll probably get them all in order and slowly complete them. I guess I'll add them all to my christmas list. (Which contains sooo many games.) The only reason I was put off from FF was the fact I brought the Spanish version of one and I kinda disliked it. After that, I never brought an English one so I never knew. Don't shop for games in Tenerife. When they say you can play it in English, they lie.
Anyways, in case anyone missed it now, take a look at
Dragon Age. My god it looks amazing. After NWN: HOTU (Which I thought had practically one of the most enjoyable storylines for any RPG) it makes you wonder if they can get it any better...which they have.
Here's some facts I read:
QUOTE
"Everything in the world has to make sense," according to Greig, so he's had his artists hard at work drawing historical maps detailing the last 5,000 years of the world's development. Kingdoms have risen and fallen, empires have been forged and torn down, and there will be traces of them all over the world.
"Players might find a book somewhere in the game, and read about a culture that doesn't appear for another couple of games in the series," Bioware's Tom Ohle told us -- yes, they have plans for Dragon Age's world beyond just one game. |
QUOTE
Dragon Age will be controlled from an ingenious combination of views. A KOTOR-style third-person behind view is where most of the exploring is done, but when in combat, it's best to switch to a second tactical perspective, higher above the battlefield and much more in line with Bioware's older Infinity Engine RPGs -- but in 3D.
QUOTE
The two characters he had to show off -- a tall, grizzled dual-wielding barbarian and a somewhat stuck-up female magic user -- were both a wealth of intricate details, and at times there must have been many hundreds of fighting creatures on screen at once. Even the facial features were carefully animated, giving the characters a real sense of personality.
QUOTE
Multiplayer, a popular feature from past Bioware games, will also be included. This time, the multiplayer campaign will cover the same events and visit the same places as the single-player game, but it will have many changes to better suit the multiplayer style. For example, the game won't pause for dialogue or cut-scenes.
QUOTE
Further corroborating this fact, BioWare reveals that the single-player campaign will feature something like 40-50 hours of gameplay.
QUOTE
The good news is that Dragon Age will be powered by a completely new proprietary 3D technology that will allow full 3D camera movement.
QUOTE
So if your character is say crossing a bridge like you can see in one of the screenshots, it's quite possible that there'll be a major battle going on down in the valley below.
QUOTE
One is that there'll be plenty of customary BioWare humor evident in the dialogue and in the direction of the cut-scenes, and the other is a minor touch that will surely only deepen the illusion of playing in a living and breathing virtual world - your characters will now react to the stuff that's going in their environment, and I don't just mean going "holy hell!" when they see the huge boss creature. Your barbarian character will walk in and a flock of birds will cross his path. As any fearless warrior… oh wait, that's not what fearless barbarians do… Anyway, the point is that the barbarian will be startled by the flock of birds; he'll jerk back uncomfortably and follow them with his gaze as they fly away. Nothing fancy, but still adds a nice touch to the game…
QUOTE
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Dragon Age will, of course, feature a multiplayer component that will concentrate mostly on co-op action, though BioWare has a few other ideas that they'd like to implement before they're done with the development.
QUOTE
As far as the release date goes, nothing has been revealed yet. For now the developer is just saying Dragon Age will be done "when it's done."
Lot's of other previews can be found on the Bioware page. A few screenshots:

NWN Style! Woo!

Look at that army of soldiers on the left. OH...MY...GOD!

Now that's just, amazing.

Tasty graphics.
I'm not looking forward to the specs on this though, ouch! But holy hell, a game that will take RPG'ing to another level.
screenshark15 - October 16, 2004 11:53 PM (GMT)
just wondering, has anyone here ever played Chrono Cross? I've been wanting to buy this game for a while.

DaEagle - October 17, 2004 12:07 AM (GMT)
I'm looking foward to new Zelda. What system?
screenshark15 - October 17, 2004 12:36 AM (GMT)
Gamecube, lol. You should try to find the trailer somewhere (gametrailers.com) it's really sweet
The rattled mind of bob - October 17, 2004 12:58 AM (GMT)
Yeah, Zelda's going to be a great game. I really can't wait. I'll try to dig up some screens and post 'em.
Refluxe - October 17, 2004 09:40 AM (GMT)
I've loved old skool Zelda but never got into the one's on GC or whatever...because I don't have one.
@Screen, Chrono Cross. I've heard that it's just as good or even better than Chrono Trigger but I never could find it anywhere to buy and then I pretty much forgot about it. Looks amazing.
screenshark15 - October 17, 2004 04:20 PM (GMT)
I should try to find it somewhere. Oh and I also heard that they were making a 3rd one called Chrono Break, but I think it was just a rumor.

Chrono Brake is supposedly and 4th game in the Chrono series. As of right now, absolutly nothing is confirmed about the game. Square has yet to even officialy announce it. Rumors for it started when, on December 5, 2001, Square registered the tradmarks for the names "Chrono Break" in the US and "Chrono Brake" in Japan. As of January 10, 2004 the game publisher let go of it's US trademark for the name "Chrono Break". It would now seem very unlikely that they are still planning on making the game. Interestingly though, they're still holding on to their Japanese trademark for the name "Chrono Brake".
We'll have more info when it becomes available. |

Do you have Icewind Dale?

Hey Fluxe, you may have already told me this, but when does KOTOR2 come out? I'm chomping at the bit waiting for it.
Oh, and I'll try and have an extensive preview on FFXII shortly.

@The rattled mind of bob, XBox version in December (6th to be totally accurate I think) and PC in February. I'll have to wait for PC sadly, unless I get an XBox for Christmas which I'm currently deciding.

Bumpage for the sake of TRMOB highjacking all the other topics. Evil forkish goblin man of divine wallpaper.
Well well, I never got Final Fantasy and I don't care. Shame, I doubt I'll ever get round to buying them.
Hmm, does anyone have WoW?
The rattled mind of bob - January 19, 2005 07:27 PM (GMT)
Tee-he. I thought this was long gone.
This can be the place for aaaaaaaall my questions. There are many, as you know.
I'll work on a section for WoW when I can grab some spare time.
Refluxe - January 19, 2005 08:36 PM (GMT)
Ack, I just cancelled my subscription for Ultima Online. I feel so sad. 42 months on that game. Long time! I'll come back to it in a few years.
As for World Of Warcraft. I can't order it from America, looks like I am going to have to wait until the 25th February. Damn, oh well, TRMOB, you'll probably be playing before I do now!
The rattled mind of bob - January 20, 2005 03:53 AM (GMT)
Perhaps. I figure if I order my computer on February 5th, I’ll get it between the 15th and 20th. The first game I want to buy after that is WoW, so I figure I’ll have that around the 22nd. So we could be on at roughly the same time.
I have a few more questions about Icewind Dale II:
You said it’s not an MMORPG but you can play it online? I’m just wondering how that’d work. How does the game differ online? Can you play with others?
Also, I’m thinking of trying to setup some type of way to do reviews and previews for RPGs in here. Then have like an index in my original posting saying what page you can find everything on. I don’t know yet, but I want to try and set something up.
Refluxe - January 20, 2005 05:41 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (TRMOB)
You said it’s not an MMORPG but you can play it online?
Yeah. MMORPG's are games that focus most/all of the gameplay online meaning you have to play with other people instead of single player. Overall the game is not an MMORPG but I guess when you're actually play online, it can be called that. Confusing.
QUOTE (TRMOB)
I’m just wondering how that’d work. How does the game differ online?
Icewind Dale II does not differ much at all. In the single player game you get to pick 6 adventurers before you start and you control them as you would in Baldur's Gate. This is exactly the same for Icewind Dale II in multiplayer. Whoever is the server leader will be able to choose how many characters each person can control. When I played it, I had two, my sister had two and my brother had two. (Regretfully as they suck) The campaign can be then played as normal like you would one player.
QUOTE
Can you play with others?
Yep, but not often very many people are on Gamespy playing it.

The graphics look amazing (as usual) and it looks much better than FFX, so I'm buying it no matter what.
The rattled mind of bob - January 24, 2005 05:10 PM (GMT)
Same here. It’s just a shame we have to wait so long for it. I was counting on Suikoden IV to tide me over until Xenosaga 2 comes out, which would then tide me over until FFXII comes out, but from what I hear, SKIV’s main character doesn’t have a voice, which I hate.
Now, there are many other games out there that sport a main character with no voice: KOTOR1 & 2, Fable, GTA3, and many others. But those games pulled it off just fine. In the KOTOR’s, you can’t actually hear you character’s voice, but you control everything he or she says which makes up for it. In Fable, the game is constructed to where you really don’t even have to have a voice, and that’s fine. In GTA3, well, that’s self-explanatory. Now with a game like Suikoden, I find a voice for the main character quite necessary. Oh well.
QUOTE
It depends on what they rate it
Heh, I never pay attention to that when it comes to RPGs. They can be a bit nit-picky in their reviews.
Anyway, I just pre-ordered Xenosaga 2, which is coming out here in America on February 16th.
I’m still sick, so we’ll just use this thread for RPG chat until I can get something running. Oh, any of you can feel free to post reviews or previews, if you want.
Sqall - January 24, 2005 05:32 PM (GMT)
I'm a massive fan of RPG's especialy Final Fantasy series
Don't know if this has been said already, but is anyone going to get Guild Wars?
I hears its supposed to be really good, an online RPG where you dont have to pay monthly...
It's not out yet, only Beta version for the North Americans. But it's supposed to come out pretty soon. :thumb:
www.guildwars.com
The rattled mind of bob - January 24, 2005 06:06 PM (GMT)
Hmm, that looks intriguing.
Anyway, I’m still debating how to run this thread to effect that I want it. I’d like to have reviews, previews, and many others things, but I’d like a certain level of organization as well. Perhaps when someone writes a major preview or review, a link can be found to it from my original post starting the thread.
I’m saying all that because I’d like ideas from you all, the people interested in RPGs. I’m looking for an effective system, which will allow for easy access to RPG information from this thread, and convenience as well.
Gah, I wish you could split threads up into different sections.

Hmm, Gamespot's ratings can be deceiving! 'Divine Divinity' is rated it 8.6 on there and normally I trust what they say so I went and brought it. (For a massive £3). It sucks. Maybe it's just me but I can't get into it, seems so dated, boring compared to others I play. Crap. I could have brought a premium NWN module for that.
I've just read up on some stuff about Neverwinter Nights 2 and it sounds very good. Check it out on the Bioware forums.

I’ve actually been looking into NWN and I must say, it looks quite intriguing. You said it’s not really an MMORPG, right?
As far as ratings go, I find I agree with GameInfomer the most.
I’ve been reading a ton on the WoW site, as I’m trying to familiarize myself with how a game like that works, so I won’t walk into the world blind when I get the game.
Hey Refluxe, do you prefer PvP severs or RP servers? Or do just like both of them?
