Title: Being 17 and driving sucks ass
UrbanCombat - May 11, 2007 05:28 PM (GMT)
Right this weekend I was going to pick up my new car, my first one. Im so excited I can hardly wait to drive around. I bought a new car stereo for the occasion, im so pumped up with excitement, as well as my mates. So yeah my parents were like 'ok we will sort out the insurance for you' and im like yeah great thanks alot.
The end lesson of college my mum rings up and goes 'yeah its going to be £1300' and im like WTF *scream* as i was thinking it was going to be around 5-600 quid which i can handle. Im so fucking down, my parents tried everything from different quotes and stuff, but i just cannot pay that much money. To pay it I would have to work full time, which is fucking out of the question as im not working in some shit-hole for shite pay, im going onto further education to get a decent job. So I won't be able to drive for another 4 months which is sooo long i might just kill myself everytime i see my driver's liscence sitting in my wallet.
This is the first time im going to say this while actually meaning it ffs.

Aye, insurence is a bitch.
It's fucked both my brothers over with car, here especially, where we live we get super high insurence rates when in like anywhere else in Canada it's super cheap.
It's really a huge varible to stop yuo from gettign a car, I mean fuck I would just love to be able to buy an old beater car, for like next to nothing just for something to 'whatever' in. But insurence stops you from that. But yeah Iguess it's kind of a hazzard, but there'sno need to be paying so much for insurence.
Snake Liquid - May 12, 2007 01:17 AM (GMT)
Insurance is a bitch for people around our age. I'm 16 but the insurance we have is managable. Fortunately, I believe I was able to get the good student discount because I do well in school. Even still, I can't do anything that would risk raising my insurance rate, such as getting a ticket.
UrbanCombat - May 12, 2007 10:53 AM (GMT)
Well my auntie was selling her car for £250 which I thought was a deal becuase its a good well kept car. But the insurance is way over the mark for it, I think it is so expensive becuase I have had the liscence less than a year and I'm more 'prone to accidents' How do they expect 17 year olds to get £1300 or $2600?
So annoyed its untrue, but hopefully I will get a named insurance under the Escort we have, so at least I might be able to drive untill my sister leaves home for university.
Otacon - May 12, 2007 11:08 AM (GMT)
Dude. Its only going to be about £500-£600 if you go UNDER YOUR PARENTS name.
And I can guess you have a car with something around a 1.4 engine or a smaller sportier car?
I paid £1300 for my first year, I work part time. I have no money for anything else though. But after your first year if you get a NCB it drops loads. Ive gone from £1300 to £800 Also, If it makes it easier. try paying per month. And look for some quotes yourself.
www.confused.com is a good place to start.
UrbanCombat - May 12, 2007 07:20 PM (GMT)
^ lol dude, thats excatly what we have done. We tried it under my parents name but the cheapest is 1300 quid, and weve tried confused.com. And the car is a Metro 1100 S, 1.1 engine.
If you could give the name of the company that would get it at that 5-600 pound mark that would be great :D
P.S Why did you pay £1300 if you could get it for 5-600 quid? If you don't mind me asking.
Fierce Deity - May 12, 2007 08:08 PM (GMT)
My insurrence was only 800, Try doing pass plus? That lowers your insurence.
Its also better to get around a 1.1 or 1.2 engine, Mines a 1.2 and I'm insurred under my mothers name.
ADJ - May 12, 2007 08:21 PM (GMT)
Yeah, that's why I'm not gonna get my own car for a while after I get my license; I struggle with money as it is. I remember my Latin teacher saying that his car insurance for him and his wife has been about £200 for years, then his son got a car, and it's up to £1500 or so. Sucks.

it's not life's fault you don't have the balls and common sense to work full time
...was that out of line? It's just an opinion.
EDITI retract this statement

^Dude, that was out of line. He's in college; there's no time.
UrbanCombat - May 12, 2007 09:15 PM (GMT)
Yeah...please read all my post im still in college ;) I think I have the balls and enough common sense not to work in a supermarket all my life.

Because I wanted a No Claims Bonus after a year. Which you dont get under another persons name.
Hmm. I think your doing something qrong in the quotes tbh.
Are you doing or have done Pass Plus? If you havent I'd reccomend trying it.
Try Quinn Direct, its who I am with. Or Endsleigh, they were good for me. You may find, that because its an older car the insurance prices will be higher for you because it would be more prone to be written off in a crash.
Tescos was pretty good with my mates aswell. Another thing you have to take into consideration is any mods to the car and your postcode. Certain postcode's are higher risk than others.
Also another major thing is, Click Third Party Fire & Theft. Fully comp for a first year driver is always going to rape you. I'm still on TPF&T that could be whats pushing the prices up for you.
Keep me posted.
(Note I drive a 1.4 Megane R reg in a high risk area with a 1yr NCB)
dJdC - May 12, 2007 10:55 PM (GMT)
yea when I 1st got my license I was paying I think 2450 a year just for liabilty for a 97 Subaru. Now I am paying 4300 for a 02 Volkswagen GTI with full collision (thanks Geico). Yea insurance rapes ya.
Otacon - May 12, 2007 11:12 PM (GMT)
Would that be a subaru impreza as the first car?
Damn lucky americans being allowed bigger engines than us brits :P
You do see that though. First car for a brit, small car. First car for an american, big truck. No digs at americans btw, just sayign you guys are allowed to drive bigger cars from the earlier ages.
Firey_Snake - May 13, 2007 08:43 AM (GMT)
Bagh - you're complaining that you can't afford insurance? I can't even afford to learn to drive! Seeing people younger than me with full driving licences is depressing!
I do pity you though - £1300 is too much. You fully comp? Go for 3rd party, fire and theft - that ought to knock the price down a bit.
I'm a motorcyclist, so my insurance is fairly cheap, but I can't carry my 1yr no claims bonus over to car insurance. :-(
That said, I'm moving to London next year, so I can't see my insurance being too cheap - very high risk over there!
UrbanCombat - May 13, 2007 11:25 AM (GMT)
Hmmm I enquired about PassPlus and only 3% is knocked off the total price, which is about £30. Is that worth it becuase I would spend more than that doing the lessons.
I'll try and get quotes from the companies you mentioned Otacon, as even with 3rd party and no fire and theft, It comes out at the price were talking about.
And Fiery_Snake my parents gave me lessons as a birthday present which helped out alot :P

Pass plus will knock off more than 3% its much more.
Firey, what do you ride?
BigK - May 13, 2007 04:34 PM (GMT)
Insurance was sort of an issue when I was 18, but my dad paid for it then. I pay for insurance on Subi now, hehe, 28 RULES!

:-( My parents were made redundant for my birthday, which didn't help at all! (Right before christmas too, which was fun....)
Anyway, in response to Otacon - I ride a little Piaggio Typhoon at the moment, but I'm saving up for a full motorcycle licence so I can get me a Suzuki Bandit 600. (By the time I can afford the 600 I'll have a couple of years no claims, so insurance won't be a problem)
Seriously though - any type of insurance takes the piss really. How on earth does anyone expect a 17 year old in full time education to pay for it! I guess the point is that they don't. :-(
Otacon - May 13, 2007 07:37 PM (GMT)
Ahhh yeah. Bandits are cool.
I want to start riding. I wanna do my CBT and get a Aprillia RS 125 then by the time im 21 will be the 2 years for the CBT then I can take the direct access course and get a bigger bike with 2 years riding underneath me.
Just need to persuade my mum now :P
Sorry for the hijack btw.

Luckily I dont really have insurance and stuff. I dont know much about it, I dont own a car. But by the sound of this it sure is fucked. I was planning to buy a scooter soon and I dont think you really need insurance for that and stuff, here in Holland anyway.

As far as I'm aware you need insurance for any sort of motor vehicle.
You can still injure and crash into things/people on a scooter so you need something covering your ass.
..Liquid.. - May 13, 2007 07:56 PM (GMT)
Oh, damn :(
Well just to ask, you have to pay for insurance right and stuff, how much would it be. This may sound like a dumb question, but I dont know much about this kind of stuff.
Otacon - May 13, 2007 08:20 PM (GMT)
Depends on loads of stuff. best bet would be to find an insurance company that runs in your country and run a few quites from variosu people.
It depends on Age, Gender, Area living in, vehicle, engine size etc etc

Yea it was an impreza. Loved that car. I had a 1990 civic hatch at the same time with a b16 motor in it. I was paying around 1200 for liability. That car moved.
Otacon - May 14, 2007 04:52 PM (GMT)
Civics are one of the cars that you can do anything too.
Man I have to wait untill I'm like 21 before I can even afford to get an impreza. I did a quote as a laugh when I started and it wanted 10k for thrid party insurance. Jeez.
UrbanCombat - June 5, 2007 12:12 PM (GMT)
Well that god damn insurance is not coming down (btw BUMP :D ) its still 13 hundred quid. Looks like i'm just gonna have to pay for it. However, the car is taxed till next year and has a years MOT on it so that isn't to bad. My parents said they will chip in and pay for half of it
I'm all for doing things by yourself but if someones lends a hand I can't say no B)
