Title: Phobias

abc123 - September 4, 2007 02:17 PM (GMT)
Today was the scariest day of my life.

I have social phobia and glossophobia, I dont know if they're the same thing or 2 different fears, but sort of the same principle.Basically I am very shy. SP is an exagerated form of shyness, so today we had an unprepared oral, and Ive never had one of these before, I was hoping it was topics like cars, walking or other simple things, but it turned out I was wrong. The topics were things like if your family were the Simpsons..., The confessions of a student at (my schools name), What would you do if you were in (biology teachers name)s shoes. Ect. and the thing is, I find these topics very hard to answer, maybe cause Im not creative enough or something, but I would find it very difficult to make a speech on 1 of those. Now like I said, this was the scariest situation I have ever been in, and some of you may think its bullshit but a phobia and a strong possibility of it going wrong is fucking scary. I even thought about suicide I was so scared. I was actually on the verge of doing it just now. (fucking serious)
I will have to say mine tomorrow, another thing, my English class is 85% girls, and Im very shy in front of them.

(worse than any nightmare Ive ever had.)

I never knew the full potential of fear before... now I do.

Dude, first off you need to calm down. Second, suicide?! I understand you suffer from glossophobia but suicide ain't worth it. C'mon give it a thought; killing yourself over some piece of creative speaking crap.
Remember, there are many different ways you can solve this problem. One, talk to your teacher about this .. tell him/her your problem and he/she may probably understand and exempt you.
Two, face it .. instead of wasting time sit down and write down ideas for your speech tomorrow.
Three, don't go to school tomorrow.
I recommend you stick to advice no. 2 'coz you will probably be in situations similar to this in the future and how are you gonna cope up with it then.

Yes I see, but the thing is I have said many, many orals or speeches in my life, but none have made me as anxious as this. The thing is I am scared I will get a topic and not know what to say, humiliating myself.
The suicide thing proves how fearful I was but I know its stupid.
I have been nervous the whole day, thinking about it. I even missed lunch because I wasn't hungry at all.

Right now Im looking for ways to hide my blanks,in case they happen, like saying things like-So, what else can I say about x. Or something.
The other thing is I am in the top English class, and so far the people that have gone have produced humerous, top notch speeches, how am I to match that?

You don't always have to compare yourselves with others and you don't need to worry about what other people will think about your speech or if you are going to make a fool out of yourself.
Worrying about it will only make matters worse, utilize your time now.

Humiliation is overrated. I know it's like your phobia but it's really not that bad. You could try and make a joke out of it if you screw something up.

You're more likely to make a fool of yourself if you get more anxious and worked up, just relax and let it flow, try and be comfortable in what you do, and any errors will just seem deliberate, or will be ignored due to the magnificence of the rest of what you say!

Thanks guys for the support but I might just say fuck it and not do it at all. I had a sick dream last night that some guy was being tortured by some gangmembers, they cut his tomach up a bit, then took a machete out and started hacking his arm off, while he screamed.
I have never fucking had a dream like that before.

Fuck it, whats a bad mark compared to possible humilation.

I'm clastrophobic. I get very edgy in tight spots, which is why I hate sitting in the back of a car so much. I either drive, sit in the passenger side or don't go at all unless it's roomy or a van.

I said the oral to my teacher alone at break. Told her what I have too.
At first I was very releived but now I feel a bit depressed, like theres no reason to live. Im not whining Im being truthful. Fuck.
I feel strange.

I had a phobia like that once, I get nervous and stutter alot. I took up CX-Debate and it has seemed to all but be gone...
Any way you shouldn't feel like shit for telling your teacher. Lemme guess you feel useless... Yeah alot of my friends get that when they have to sit on the sidelines for a week after they get injured.

Just realize, that what other people think doesn't really matter, in the long run. That's what i do. But my phobias are heights, and friendly priest.

I have a fear of wasps. I'm not sure what thats called.

People get strange phobias, some people Ive seen on TV had ones on cats and birds. One woman couldn't even touch a feather because of her fear of birds. She would cry and tremble, even the sight of one got her in a state.
Our brain can ruin our life in so many ways.

and friendly priest.

Scary, I met one of them once, really friendly one.

I don't really understand fear of spiders. My sister is terrified of them, yet in england none of them are poisones or dangerous. My fear seems more rational, as wasps can in fact harm you.

I had some phobias, like when I was little, I was terrified of butterflies, but I got over that one.

And I was, and still am a bit, social phobic as well.

Back in school, in the breaks, I used to sit in the staircases to be by myself. I felt like all the people were staring at me when I was walking trough the hallways.

What helped me to get partially over it is to find a good (school)friend. Someone to take your mind off the people around you.
