that second one looks like a scissors hackjob.

I know, but It was just soo damn hard to cut it from the original piece.
This next one is my third ( and the most best ) render I've made. From the game yakuza ( Ryu ga gotoku in japan )

Redners are not a fan art - moving to computer corner.
BTW what are you rendering with? You still have a long way to go. Can you give me original pictures of 1 and 2 so I can try it out?

The third one is pretty good, the first two are very jagged.
Who here uses the pen tool to render? I've always used the lasso, but I've heard that the pen is better, I've just never understood how to use it.

There you go, Red queen:
FoxhoundSnakeI use Gimp. To cut out different pics, I use the paths-tool.

Ah ok, dunno about Gimp, but with Photoshop I use magic wand to clear solid colours and hand cut the rest with the eraser tool, dunno if Gimp has those, if they do you might wanna, however hand cutting takes time and patience and is very annoying at times :D

Man you see all my renders I made and every single one of them is made witth the polygonal lasso tool. I prefer using that over the rest of them.

I have never done a render, but when I used to Photochop cars - an almost identical task with a different application - I only used the Lasso. I don't know them by name, but the Lasso tool where you click to form a new reference point and then click around the object in question worked like a charm for me. You can always clean up jagged edges with a variety of brushes and make it look well done if you take your time.
