Title: Confidential Legacy
Description: canon or not?

Okay spoiler if you didn't play through this:

Confidential Legacy basically comes out and says at the end that Roy is Meryl's father because he slept with her mom. Also could this story explain why Snake and Meryl haven't been together for a while. Her leaving on her own and then going into detention could explain this because obviously in MGS4 it seems they haven't seen each other in a while.

The biggest problem is Gurgolvich (or however you spell his name) he seems to get killed in this story which would ruin the story of MGS2:Sons of liberty. So that may ruin things but I'm guessing they may still use some elements of this story in the actual games story.

The Snake Tales are non-canon

They have no bearing on the Metal Gear story.

Yeah, I was wondering myself, a while back. I knew they weren't canon, but the Meryl just leaving explanation seemed a good one to me, if she stayed with Snake after Shadow Moses, then this would be just the way she'd leave, in my opinion.
Yeah though, I worked out they weren't canon for myself, or pretty much everything in that Tale wouldn't have fit into the Main story.

The non-canon ending with Otacon too in MGS1, Campbell says Meryl was his daughter, but there you go, it's all non-canon.
I personally think Kojima could have explained a bit more about it in MGS2, possibly during chats with Otacon.

Oh, and if anyone ever gets the irresistible urge to play this tale or any others, check us out Here.

You're all welcome with us.

Important thing to remember, guys, is that whilst Snake Tales, the MGS comics etc. are all non-canon in the proper MGS universe, they are based off the story, and therefore do hold certain facts and open possibilities.

The point of Roy Campbell being Meryl's father was actually disclosed in the non-canon 'Otacon Ending' of MGS1 – just as Ichbin was saying. However, to expand, that ending is indeed 'non-canon', but it does hold certain truths – which is the point I'm trying to make.

Back to the point of Snake and Meryl. We know that Snake and Meryl split up a short time after MGS1 from a conversation Snake has with Otacon during the Tanker chapter. After defeating Olga, if Snake calls Otacon they’ll have this conversation:

QUOTE (Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty)
Otacon: "She’s not dead, is she?
Snake: "No, just knocked out… Looks like a little angel, doesn’t she?"
Otacon: "What’s gotten into you?"
Snake: "Nothing…"
Otacon: "Sleeping Beauty may have been awakened by Prince Charming’s kiss. but you’d better not try it here."
Snake: "I’m with you. Besides; I’ve had enough of tomboys."

Looking at this, it suggests after the incidents of Shadow Moses Snake and Meryl may have been together for a short while. However, as time pasted, they gradually grew apart. You are generally allowed to come to your own conclusions; like I believe that Meryl left in pursuit of becoming a better soldier – and in Guns of the Patriots, we see she seems to have formed the new FOX-HOUND. Whilst Snake and Otacon joined Philanthropy after Meryl left, because otherwise she may have joined Philanthropy herself.

Nevertheless, whatever Snake Tales does say isn't always flat-out wrong (unless it contradicts a plot-point in the actual story); it just merely represents one of many possibilities. However, Snake Tales and other non-canon expansions on the MGS story are indeed based off the main MGS narrative, and they can hold many facts/potentials. Therefore, it's important not to completely discard them because they are 'non-canon'.
