Title: Silent Hill
Description: Official Chat Topic

Before December I had never played a single Silent Hill game. I was never bothered about it until I saw the movie. After seeing it I thought 'hmm, maybe I should have a go at one of the games.'
So, I bought a pre-owned copy of Silent Hill 2 (Director's Cut) for the PS2 and WOW!!! The game is pretty scarey shit. I must have been a fool not to play Silent Hill sooner. Horrofic monsters, spooky music, intimidating atmosphere its great stuff!

Yea, Silent Hill is one of my favorite horror games. I love the whole atmosphere and mystery in the game; although its got its fair share of blood and gore, it manages to set itself apart from Resident Evil and other such games.
sadistic_greyfox - January 15, 2008 08:06 PM (GMT)
Not to mention SH2 has one of the best and most twisted story lines in any game ever created. I've only played SH2 & 3 but those two games were awesome and made me an instant fan. I watched all the cutscenes for SH1 and currently watching the ones for part 4. I hope SH5 turns out to be awesome.

Bah never played a Silent Hill game, the next one is on my list of buys for this year. HD blood and gore....sounds fun
sadistic_greyfox - January 15, 2008 08:38 PM (GMT)
SH isn't just about Blood and Gore though, it's about the unsettling as hell atmosphere that will have you more jumpy than will smith in a Dark Building in a post apocalyptic NY.

Silent Hill is the best horror game full stop.
Anyone remember the mannequin bit in Silent Hill 3? When you see a mannequin over one side of the room, a plain, normal mannequin, then you walk over to the other side of the room and hear a loud scream (enough to make the hardest of people scared) so, you go back to see what it was and the mannequin's head is on the floor with blood everywhere......
Its got such good gameplay as well, its easily in the top 10 franchises of all time. It get so fucked up at times it really does make me wonder what type of people make this game.
EDIT: Oh Yes, here is a video of it:

I've only played the 2nd game (after Sad kept going on about it :P )
I have to say, it is a really brilliant game. Very unsettling, even if you're a horror fan. Relies on atmosphere for frights than jump-out-you moments ala Resident Evil.
I'm looking to get hold of the third one.
sadistic_greyfox - January 15, 2008 09:26 PM (GMT)
@ roy, that part was so damn unexpected. I walked up to it first and expected to probably get an item off of it like in SH2, when i didn't get anything I hit it just incase it was a monster. So I walk away turn the corner and the most Skin Ripping Scream I've ever heard comes out of no were. made me jump. XD I switched to my shotgun and rounded the corner, and got a weird shiver.
the 2nd has the best Story I'd say but 3 has the best weapons and Combat.

Yeah I'll openly admit I'm not good with horror games. Seems like I'll have to get over that. I've seen friends play them and my god theres so many jumpy bits <_< I'm such a wuss.
WHiTeFaLCoN - January 16, 2008 01:02 PM (GMT)
I'm up to that bit after you meet Red Pyramid Head in the apartments and I'm a bit stuck. The apartments give me the creeps.
Pricey - January 19, 2008 04:09 PM (GMT)
Have you done it yet? I'll try and help. But use the spoiler tags! :P
I love these games, really looking forward to SH5. Though, I havent played 4 as yet, only the demo.

While its not as good as the others, its stil an amazing game. The whole feel of the game is slightly different to the others but it is still one heck of a scary game.
Pricey - January 19, 2008 09:08 PM (GMT)
Yeah I heard about that. Not quite the same feeling as the others? Im sure I will get on to it one day.
Its the people that did SH2 that are doing SH5, and they are keeping to the same sort of stuff because people liked SH2 so much, which is awesome in my eyes.
sadistic_greyfox - January 19, 2008 09:09 PM (GMT)
I watched the Cutscenes for 4, many SH fans told me that it was an alright game but probably the worst in the series. Even though it may have been the worse in the series it was still better than most average games though.
What about all the music for SH like "theme of Laura"SH2 opening, and SH3 opening songs. that AKIRA guy is awesome.
Pricey - January 19, 2008 09:13 PM (GMT)
Hell yeah, the music is amazing. I had Theme of Laura on my MP3 player a while back. Such an awesome tune.

Akira Yamaoka is indeed a Brilliant man when it comes to music, it's amazing he could do something so awesome for a game. Don't get me wrong MGS music is great to but sometimes I feel as if the SH ones surpass them emotion wise.
Since about October I've had "Theme of Laura" and "You're Not Here" on my psp and listen to it almost everyday. I'm sure sometime in the future I'll play it to death to but for right now Ijust love the damn things.
Pricey - January 21, 2008 11:37 AM (GMT)
Well I think this should be made into an official chat.
WHiTeFaLCoN - January 21, 2008 12:45 PM (GMT)
I haven't played the game alot recently (Halo 3 :P ), but I'm kinda stuck. I'm in the apartments but there is like a safe I can't open. I assume theres something important in it.
sadistic_greyfox - January 21, 2008 08:40 PM (GMT)
Bullets and health drinks, back track into the toilet and search inside of it, you'll get the combination.
Young Snake - January 22, 2008 01:00 PM (GMT)
I've played every game, except for nr. 3. I'm a big fan of Silent Hill. Currently playing through The Room again (nr. 4). It's a little too easy and nice for a Silent Hill game, and it's a shame that Silent Hill isn't the main setting, but I still think it's a really good game. The 1st person view in the apartment was a unique feature. I still consider SH2 to be the best game in the series.
So which protagonist or character in the series do you guys favour? I personally like James Sunderland, because he turned out to be completely different than one would initially think. I like Heather/Cheryl too, that girl is a lunatic.
WHiTeFaLCoN - January 22, 2008 01:23 PM (GMT)
I really need to get more of these SH games. I'm going on holiday in March, so I'm gonna get Origins for my PSP.

:o You have to play Silent Hill 3 now! Personally its my favorite of the series. As you have probably guessed, Heather is the character I like the most.
sadistic_greyfox - January 22, 2008 08:23 PM (GMT)
From what I heard 3 was way better than 4. I really enjoyed 3 as well as all the extra weapons. 3 also wraps up the story from part 1. 3 has the best weapons though as well as something very similar to a light saber XD.
James is also my fav lead. he's a very flawed individual plus his story was probably the best in the series.

I've only watched the cutscenes on YouTube, I really got into it. I'm gonna try and find it in a local store, or rent it if I can. Heather is a great character, the best remaining link to Alessa.

Compared to the other games of the series, I'd say SH4 is the weakest so far, in terms of storyline and scary atmosphere. I'm glad that SH3 gives a pointback to SH1 and continues from there on. I always wondered what happened to Harry and the newborn after SH1 ^_^
James has the best story, no doubt, and it ties deeply into both Silent Hill and the Pyramid Heads that stalk him.

I never knew about it, but Silent Hill:Origins looks pretty good. And for PS2!

Roy Campbell - March 3, 2008 07:52 PM (GMT)
Yeah, as you probably know, it was released on PSP and like many popular PSP games, has now made its way onto PS2. I haven't picked this one up yet, there are been loads and loads of good games out recently, I can't buy them all, its definatly on my 'to buy' list
