CryEngine coming to PS3, 360
Console versions of the technology behind visual stunner Crysis will debut at this year's Game Developers Conference.

Back in April of 2006, rumors surfaced that Crytek was bringing its much-anticipated PC shooter Crysis to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. More recently, there was speculation that an extended "Crysis 1.5" would be coming exclusively to the PS3.

Although the aforementioned rumors remain unconfirmed, today the German developer announced that console versions of CryEngine 2, the technology behind Crysis' processor-punishing visuals, are in development. The console editions of the middleware will be unveiled at private appointments behind closed doors at the upcoming Game Developers Conference, which runs from February 18-22 in San Francisco.

"This year's engine will be shown for the first time running on multiple hardware platforms such as the PS3 and Xbox 360 to a select audience," the company said in a statement.

While general attendees may not be able to get a peek at the console editions of the engine, Crytek will be showing off the fully optimized engine's performance on a budget PC that could be put together for about $600. In addition, Crytek's Cevat Yerli, Sten Hübler, and Bernd Diemer will host a conference session titled "Crysis in the Making," which will provide insight into how the PC shooter came together.

Shhhhhhweeeeeeeet.

Running on a budget PC!?!? Freakin' sweet... I wonder if they will release a patch for the PC version...

This isn't that suprising considering they sold a mere 80,000+ copies of Crysis worldwide. Only sensible to use the engine on thier console endevours seing as they're capable.

I admit this is exciting, but I just can't think of how they'll be able to fully use the CryEngine to it's fullest like they did in Crysis for any other game. Also that engine couldn't work to full capacity on any computers known to man, so how will it work on a console?

I'm sure something cool will come out of this at any rate.

Have fun with your scaled-down engine guys.

I am pretty sure it is quite possible on the PS3.

And if you don't believe in the power of the PS3 then I hope you believe in Jesus Cry-st.

CryTek have said that the reason PS3 and 360 isn't getting Crysis is because both consoles are too weak, so yeah, I doubt you'll be recieving games with the same capacity as the PC.

haha, well said. Punny.

And yeah I actually do have some faith that the PS3 can do it, it's just a matter of getting programmers enough time and money to actually get that working. There have been shittier games that were ported to the PS3 and was worse on it (think FEAR) all because they weren't given the proper time and money.

The way I see it the PS3 should be able to handle it, but right now nobody's learned enough cheep and effective ways to use the power of the PS3, that's why console games are always evolving over time on the same technology (think MGS2 vs MGS3)

HOMYGOFZ PC SUPERIOTY ALERT

EF U CONSOLETARDZ

Sadly though, Register is right. Happily though, I'm not in the least bit bothered. Crysis was marveled just as much for it's gameplay and story as it was for it's outstanding graphics. So if Crysis or anything like it does hit consoles, I'll quite happily go out and buy it for my Ps3.

snake_ultsol - January 30, 2008 05:59 PM (GMT)
@Register: The PC will always have a far superior technical performance than consoles .. happy?

Now shut the fuck up with the "hahaha .. you guys are getting the inferior shit"

Just setting things straight, that's all. =)

Yackemflaber - January 30, 2008 06:15 PM (GMT)
but his point is that who cares if you're right or wrong, what you completely neglect is the fact that the consoles now have another great engine to work on, and no matter how you slice it that's awesome for those of us who can't afford a spiffy new computer

Oh .. so its only for the personal satisfaction. I can't blame you then ..

*cough* Consoles got games with better storylines *cough*

Just wanted to rub that in.

Stop now.

This doesn't have to degenerate into Register Vs. Everyone.

Also known as:

I'm looking forward to playing FarCry 2 on the console just to see how it stacks up against crysis on my two 8800 GTs. I know it won't come close to comparing. :P But I think they'll tweak some gameplay elements for the console because it's a dominately PC game.

I'm pumped to put crysis in my ps3. I think i need to go masturb-- do stuff now.
