Title: Nintendo should stop relying on Mario.
Description: The series is too overated and old.

White&Nerdy - February 7, 2008 09:40 PM (GMT)
I do not understand all the hype for new Mario games. Mario may have been a breakthrough in gaming on the older platforms but now we've got to the 360, ps3 wii generation I don't see how people get so excited over it. There has been some good mario games in the past but I really doubt they can do much more to the gameplay and the sort of genre is not that will host amazing graphics. So why continue making countless, average, done mario games and just leave the series to rest. Nintendo should stop relying on mario and move on, their unwillingness to keep up with modern gaming was the cubes downfall and the wii may follow suit.

micster - February 7, 2008 09:44 PM (GMT)
Wow.

Mario is an institution, People cry out for new Mario things and because its nintendo they are A class. Mario sells millions, both in sales and merch. And of cause from Mario stems off other characters that turn into successful things [Yoshi for example with Yoshi's Story]

The Wii has already sold more than the Gamecube [I believe] and its popularity is amazingly high in various groups and its paying off cos of the massive sales in Hardware and Software.

Basically; Your talkin crazy

shiver_motion - February 7, 2008 10:00 PM (GMT)
uhhh my reply would be have you ever even play mario galaxy yet?

White&Nerdy - February 7, 2008 10:09 PM (GMT)
I had a feeling making a topic against Mario would be unpopular- still think its passed its heyday and nintendo should concentrate on making new games. Let Mario go with the little dignity he has left.

Gatsby - February 7, 2008 10:33 PM (GMT)
Just like many other companies like Squenix for example, Nintendo has learned the valuable lesson that they can really take any game they like and put Mario's name in the title and watch it became a #1 seller.

Frankly, I've never been a Mario fan, I find it's olden days of 2D platforming boring, didn't put more then 7 hours into Super Mario 64, and have had no will to play Galaxy or Sunshine.

I have however played games like Super Mario Strikers and I've come to find that they really aren't bad games by any right, they all contain the polish and unique gameplay Nintendo games are known for, but it's just a matter of principle.

But at the end of the day, the whoring the Mario franchise isn't Nintendo's fault. It's the consumer's fault.

It's the consumer who makes every random spin off Mario game that comes out a best seller, it's the consumer who demands Mario Party 9 and it's the Consumer who makes Super Mario Strikers the most played game on NWFC.

If making random non platforming Mario games didn't sell, Nintendo wouldn't make them. If making 10 Final Fantasy 7 spinoffs wasn't giving Square an obscene amount of money in a short amount of time they wouldn't do it.

We can't blame the companies for trying to make their profits, we can only blame the people who are supporting the smut they are throwing at us.

Register - February 7, 2008 11:13 PM (GMT)
W&N; as Gatsby said it's purely a business decision. But I agree with you, remove that franchise and try something new. When gaming companies are still on a good run; end the following shitty franchies as well:

Medal of Honor
Final Fantasy
Zelda

krypton_ls - February 7, 2008 11:44 PM (GMT)
Without Mario, Nintendo would be pretty screwed. End of.

KALASHsixtynine - February 7, 2008 11:46 PM (GMT)
I must say, i dont like the mario games...never have, never will.
So i agree, to a certain extent. I mean, if people still enjoy it, then let them be.

SolidSnake52 - February 8, 2008 12:29 AM (GMT)
Mario games are pretty fun and I found Galaxy great. I don't think that Nintendo could pull a multimillion seller like Mario out of thier asses. Mario is what shaped Nintendo and future games(Yoshi Story,Smash Bros. etc.)

Gatsby - February 8, 2008 12:46 AM (GMT)
Nobody is undermining the importance of games like Super Mario Bros 3 and their influence on the gaming industry.

And even though Galaxy may be a great game, the fact remains that for every actual Mario platformer, there are 7 spinoff games. And at least for me, that diminishes the quality of the game reputation.

Whenever I see the title "Metroid" I know that I can expect a brand new adventure full of plenty of new bosses, new twists and new lore.

I used to look at the title Final Fantasy, and know the game was quality.

But when I look at the title of Mario, I don't expect a ground shaking platformer full of innovation and great gameplay. I expect a Tennis game.

The Passion - February 8, 2008 01:12 PM (GMT)
They definetley rely on Mario too much the first platformer was a great game in its day but new games with some graphical improvements just dont cut it. I believe they should forget about Mario and make some real games. I believe Nintendo has the potential to make great games they just keep focusing on old titles and making various spinoffs whether it be Mario Starfox Metroid Zelda etc.

Of course thats not going to happen

As far as final fantasy is concerned once Square went Enix there games have been terrible (although i thought Kingdom Hearts 2 was good) FF X2 was a joke there was little to no effort put in and i truly suspected the series was just becoming a cash cow they kept milking and FF12 was no better when i finished that game i felt like crying simply because i knew the FF series would no longer produce great games

I will never buy FF13 ever after what i went through with 12

La Li Lu Le Lo - February 8, 2008 02:43 PM (GMT)
Nintendo without Mario just does not feel right. They should stop milking the franchise, but continue with the traditional platformers. As far as Zelda goes, they need the reinvent the series. This is my favorite video game series of all time, and yet I was slightly disappointed with TP. It wasn't a bad game by any means, but it failed to bring anything new and groundbreaking to the table. Super Mario Galaxy felt somewhat fresh. I am getting tired of collecting stars/shines or whatever it may be in the next game. Other than that, I have nothing against Mario. It wouldn't hurt to make it a little more adult oriented.

Young Snake - February 8, 2008 03:08 PM (GMT)
Mario is the official mascot of Nintendo. If they can't rely on him, then who? Mario games have always been a huge success, and the latest Mario is no exception. It doesn't really matter how repetitive it might seem if fans are into it. Besides, Nintendo has several franchises they can depend on, like Zelda and Mega Man, not to mention characters with spin-off series from these franchises.

Muikuli - February 8, 2008 03:16 PM (GMT)
Mario franchise has EASILY sold more games than any other game franchise. So yeah, Nintendo would be pretty screwed without Mario. I'm not a huge fan, but I don't see much harm done with making millions of Mario games. They are usually high-quality, whatever the case and occasionally they even have new ideas.

La Li Lu Le Lo - February 8, 2008 03:17 PM (GMT)
Mega Man is made by Capcom....but yeah...zelda, metroid, star fox, kirby, donkey kong, pokemon..etc, etc.

Young Snake - February 8, 2008 03:25 PM (GMT)
^I've only played it on Nintendo, so incorrectly assumed it to be their franchise. My bad.

WHiTeFaLCoN - February 8, 2008 03:31 PM (GMT)
FINALLY! Someone who agrees with me! There are about a billion Mario games out there, they should give it a rest!

Helikaon - February 8, 2008 03:35 PM (GMT)
Why?

It makes Nintendo money and people enjoy playing them.

It would be the same as if Infinity Ward stopped making Call of Duty games or EA stopped making terrible sports games.

Yeah theres little variation between the games, but they are damn enjoyable.

This post is brought to you by a lifelong Sega fanboy.

WHiTeFaLCoN - February 8, 2008 03:42 PM (GMT)
I think its about time Nintendo invented a new hero, something new and unique.

La Li Lu Le Lo - February 8, 2008 03:43 PM (GMT)
A sega fanboy, huh???

It's on now bitch...lol..ignore me.

Legend of Zelda is one of the best games of all time.

It brought about the RPG games you know of today.
Greatest video game of all time.

monkeymaguire - February 8, 2008 04:33 PM (GMT)
i couldnt imagine nintendo without mario, could u? if sumone was to ask "name a nintendo game" straight away i'd say mario, i dont realy play mario, but i think its good they've kept the franchise going, if people enjoy it then oh well good for them, they shouldnt stop doing it, its not hurting u is it. someone says they should make it more adult, why should they make nintendo more adult? so we can have 3 adult consoles, without nintendo you'd have three serious consoles out there with no variety between them, they'd all be porting the same games, making the same money and jst get boring, i say hooora for mario and nintendos creativeness

WHiTeFaLCoN - February 8, 2008 04:41 PM (GMT)
The only reason Mario sold so many is coz he has a billion games.

HAHAHAno. It's because it's platformers that all kinds of gamers and non-gamers can enjoy.

Not really. All Final Fantasy gave us were shitty JRPGs and other than a few SNES-era ones; we would be better off without them.

And Zelda didn't become the basis for all future RPGs; it became the basis for adventure hack'n slash games.

Aquila - February 9, 2008 11:11 AM (GMT)
They make way too much money from him to leave him die with all the other gaming character rejects. I definetly agree with the point that they should make more classic Mario games then these bad money makers titles.

The Wii is only doing well because its about a third of the price of the other consoles. There are no truely amazing games on the Wii and as with most aspects of modern gaming things are becoming old and samey. Though this is true for all consoles not just the Wii. Microsoft also plays safe and continuely keeps pulling average FPS's out of its arse. On the other hand Sony have a wider range of games to fall back on and hopelly become more origional and daring with PS3 games.

Wrong!

It's doing well because it's excellently designed, easy to use, and appealing to all audiences. The price helps, yes, but it doesn't make it the only thing that helps it on the market; far from it.

There's no truely amazing games on the PS3 either and very few on the 360; does that mean they sell well to because of their low price, just like the Wii?

And yes, that was sarcasm.

As does Sony.

HAHAHA. You are actually saying that Sony has a wider range of games than both the Wii and 360. That's seriously the first time I've ever seen someone try to make that argument with a straight face.

Shyne-Bryght - February 9, 2008 03:35 PM (GMT)
Mario shouldn't stop, it's all a matter of opinion and gaming taste.

For exmaple, while I'm not a Mario fan, I love Final Fantasy games, 7 and 9 especially, and FF is a series many think should end before they ruin it. I don't think the series should end because I like that style of game, its my tastes, now people who love Mario games will feel the same way I do about FF.

The Wii is doing so well because it's a cheapest gaming console that boasts more appeal between various audiences. When I waited in line for my Wii, when I was there I saw people getting t for their kids, for their wives and even for their parents.

While the Wii does have problems as far as it's library being littered with crap. However it does have it's fair share of games, No More Heroes and Super Mario Galaxy are examples of great games that have come out on the Wii.

Shyne- Final Fantasy already is dead. It didn't help with the fact that XII was a complete dud, but aside from that, Square has been treating their franchise with no respect and taking every opportunity it can to whore the series out. Combined with the fact that they're pouring money into remakes of all the older Final Fantasy. Combined with the fact that there are almost more Final Fantasy VII spinoffs then there are actual canon Final Fantasy games.

They don't really- not quite sure why I said that.

Super Mario Galaxy is tits. It's definitely different, and it's a lot of fun. As long as they keep making Mario games that are a blast to play and something kind of out of the ordinary, there's no reason to end the series.

Exactly. For me, Galaxy is the best 'next gen' game out so far. Mario is the bollocks, his games mostly fill up the best 50 games of all time. Nintendo have other brilliant series as well, they do not only depend on Mario. Even if they did only depend on mario, you can't argue with their success.

And as for the topic of FF, Final Fantasy made RPGs. It was just as crucial to the gaming world as Pac-man or Mario. The series has been amazing, and while I do think Square Enix have made Final Fantasy go on a little slide, mainly due to the change in battle systems, they will long continue and will always be awsome. I would want them to ever stop.

Stop. This is incorrect. The correct thing would be to say that FF games were the source of inspiration for many JRPGs which are completely different from WRPGs(as in, being the story of a poor anime broken up by horrible mechanics and bland characters). Many WRPG-makers quote the Golden Box games such as Eye of the Beholder and Neverwinter Nights(the first one, not the remake) as their inspirations.

True, but the bulk of RPGs nowadays are Japanese or Japanese based, its hard not to say FF made RPGs becuase its plain to see many elements in RPGs nowadays, even the western ones, which come from FF. Besides, Final Fantasy came out before both of the games you mentioned, I would say they would have looked at Final Fantasy and been inspired by it. Would it be fair for me to say Final Fantasy made the way RPGs are made today?

rayofdoom - February 10, 2008 08:32 PM (GMT)
that ridiculous, as much as i hate Mario i think they should continue making his games, it just leaves something out there for me to hate for years to come.

its like saying Square should stop making Final Fantasy games, and Bungie should stop making Halo games (hopefully) because that's the only reason they make money!

other (smart) companies like KONAMI and CAPCOM have more than just one main franchise to rely on and have been making for so long they don't have to worry about such things; some games are: C: Street fighter, Res evil, Megaman. K: Metalgear, winning 11/PES, castlevania.

Nintendo will mostly likely die if they stopped making Mario games, that is why they've survived this long because they have been smart and always catered for children gamers.

SEGA on the other hand haven't (in consoles/hardware) because they dared to step into the future to created new games and genres which in turn made them bankrupt.
