Title: Is this a drinking problem?

iAn - February 12, 2008 09:58 PM (GMT)
I don't know what really constitutes as a 'drinking problem', but I think I may have one.

My day usually runs as such:

I wake up, have a few beers.

I do stuff.

I have about 8 more beers before I go to work.

I drink hard liquor straight from my flask in between customers all through my shift. I usually carry 2 or 3 flasks with me.

On my meal break, I go outside to my car and drink rum from the bottle in my glove compartment in my car. (I tend to take long swigs of rum while I drive. I know, I know. Not the smartest thing.)

I get off work and drink more rum right outside the store.

I get home and drink more beers.

I don't know if I have a real drinking problem or maybe I just really really like beer and rum...

What about you guys? Is this normal for you or people you know? 'Cause all this alcohal is burning a hole in my wallet and it sucks ass.

If thats every day I'd seriously think you may have a small problem. Try going a day or two without it. You'll soon find out by the way your feeling...

Getting rid of a drivinking problem doesnt mean giving up drinking. Just drinking less.

Well you do have a drinking "Problem" because your liver is going to shut down.

Do you get drunk at work?

But yes i would definetly say its a drinking problem if you feel the need to drink that much that you would risk your life, your legal capability to drive, and your job. But if you really want to know the answer you should try to go a day without drinking and if you cant go through the day without having a drink or feeling an extreme urge to drink then yes you have a drinking problem. Here some other questions you may want to ask yourself, i got this from a book i got at school that teachers were passing out.
1. Have you ever thought that you should cut down on your drinking? (thats probably a yes)

2. Have you ever felt annoyed by others criticism of your drinking?

3. Have you ever felt guilty about your drinking?

4. Do you feel the need for a drink when you get up to get started for the day?

If you answered "yes" once: you might be expiriencing an alchohol related problem.

If you answered "yes" two or more times: there is a strong possibility that an alchohol use problem currently exists.

Thats what my book says hope that helps.

Dude it seems you have a problem. More often than not, liking the taste of alcohol and consuming that much is often a manifestation of alcoholism/dependence. Some advice:

Don't drink while driving.
Don't drink if you know you will be driving (you know what I mean).
Don't drink at work, unless you hate your job or your boss.
Speak to you doctor about it.

Seriously. Cut down.

Um, dude. I don't mean to be so blunt but of course thats a damn drinking problem! That's just common sense. Look at what you've just listed, and thats daily!? I can do tons of alcohol in one or two nights but I never continue that into the week where I have work or college. Besides, my doc has told me to take a break from drinking before I seriously damage myself..and I'm not nearly drinking as much as you.

I think you KNOW you have a drinking problem unless you are seriously in denial. If thats how much you drink a day then you seriously need to knock that shit on the head. That's holiday drinking, not everyday drinking.

...I guess I have a problem then.

Well, my relatives are coming over this weekend from Tawian, so thats gonna force me to cut down for the next week or two.

Having had just come from rehab, where a lot of residents had drinking probelms, I can answer any questions if you need direct them to me.

Just a few words though, once you start drinking enough, your body grows its dependency and you NEED to keep a set amount in your body to feel right. The two to three days that people keep talking about are nothing. A third week sober is the alcoholicts worst week, and that is when most relapse. Until then, you'll just be riding the 'pink cloud' as they say.

Beer is normaly easier to get over then hard liq. but as they say, an addict is an addict is an addict. Something never to be taken lighty, no matter how strong you think you are.

I think you're definetly over-doing it and it'd be a good idea to try to cut down a little, or actually more than just little.

solidfox - February 13, 2008 02:09 PM (GMT)
I understand where you are coming from...but it is so annoying when people say that. It is so much easier said then done. People keep saying stuff like that, as if they magicly cure people. If they could, you should go to all the rehabs and AA/NA meetings in the world and magicly cure everybody of their disease.

Not a shot at you, its just, as a recovering addict, it is always so annoyingly crazy to hear people act like its just that easy.

Well, judging simply from how your normal day goes I'd say you've got a drinking problem.

However, if you don't get totally shitfaced throughout the day while you're drinking and it doesn't effect your job or your life in general, than I guess it's not really a problem, it's just unhealthy, lol.

As the Irish would say, "It's not that you're drinking too much, it's that you're not drinkin' enough!"

If this is everyday, then yes, there could be a MINOR problem, which can easily be solved by cutting the drinking at work and drinking before driving because that is NEVER smart. I mean granted, we all drink a few a day, my dad pops around 3 or 5 a day, he's not an alcoholic nor ever really drunk, but I'd recommend cutting down on some things.

It all depends on how much you can hold your beer. If you're piss drunk EVERY day, then yeah, problem, but judging by how it sounds, you got a long time period before drinks, so then it wouldn't be anything you'd have to go AA for, nor would it be a legitimate drinking problem. Granted, not even I consume that much per day, *I'm lying* but if this is every day, just drop drinking at work and before driving, no matter how sober you are, because it won't matter, if cops smell beer on your breath then you're boned.

In terms of burning a hole in your wallet, that's your problem. If you want to save some dough, I would suggest dropping the beers in the morning, the beers at work, the beers before driving, and the rum. I mean rum should be an occasion only thing, I only have rum at get togethers because it's a bit pricier than ordinary Heiniken's. Nothing wrong with drinking a few, just lose a couple from that list, namely the rum, and you should be fine. Through your description, I wouldn't say you have any serious drinking problem at all, the only problem, and this is what I strongly urge you to lose is the rum in the glove compartment, apart from that, in all honesty, you don't sound too bad a drinker at all.

*Note, if rum were cheaper, then there wouldn't be a problem with that, but you know how it is, mohjito mixes got cheaper though, bardi too, I can get both at Safeway now, haha, I used to go to the liquor store, now I go to Safeway.*

Eh well I'd have to say yes you do have a drinking problem, by my standerds anyway.

This is my advise: Drink less. Now don't go thinking ah ffs. Just don't drink as many. Lets say for example you have 8 before work. Cut it down to 6? or 4? Just lessening the amount will do you alot of good. And try cut out a few of those like at your break.

Of course you don't HAVE to take my advise but hell that's what I'd do. It's really just about self-discipline.
