Besides MGS, probably the half life series or something.
Or resident Evil.
snake_ultsol - February 14, 2008 04:15 PM (GMT)
There are quite a few games with great storylines. Here are some I could think of:
- Metal Gear Solid Series
- Shadow of the Colossus
- God of War Series
- GTA: San Andreas
- GTA: Vice City
- Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
- GUN
- Halo
- Bully
- Darkwatch
- Hitman: Blood Money
- Mafia
- Max Payne
- Mark Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure
- Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
- Okami
- Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
- Silent Hill
- Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins
Hmmm .. quite a long list there, quite a few good games.
Metalmalitia23 - February 14, 2008 04:46 PM (GMT)
Half-Life-because the voice acting in the game was incredible and the characters were portrayed very well. The story may seem simple but its actually very in depth and if you look around in the game theres so much thats implied but not said which is awsome and leaves some mystery.
Resident Evil- C'mon, one of the best zombie storylines ever, and also a game where there is no main character in the series but always one main threat. And totally disregarding the RE movies the Umbrella Corp. is awsome and actually gives reason behind the zombies even though the 'hell is overflowing' theory is way cooler
God Of War-Greek mythology is awsome, Kratos is badass, enough said.
Helikaon - February 14, 2008 04:50 PM (GMT)
Knights of the Old Republic
Genius storytelling.
Making you the former Dark Lord of the Sith was just brilliant.
Star Wars storytelling worthy of the original trilogy.
Don't forget spoiler tags boys and girls

well i'm not gonna say why but i will say what:
- Resident Evil.
- Final Fantasy 7. (fuck the haters) though i don't care much for prequels and sequels, e.g. Dirge of cerbrus.
- Knights of the old republic 1.
- Shen mue. shame it was never completed.
- Yakuza/Ryu ga gotoku.

I second that.
Also, propably my favourite: Shadow Of The Colossus , tells a story with hardly any cut scenes and does it well. Soooooo much better than with the kind of JRPG games where the story is pretty much fed to the player.
Shenmue II also has a great story (Never played the first one)
And a few others.

Final Fantasy VIII- Defiantly the best Final Fantasy story to date, and one of gaming's greatest stories. While it kind of strayed after mid Disc 3, the rest of the story was top notch featuring an excellent ensemble with original and well thought out characters all interacting in this excellent story that brought up a lot of interesting questions and a lot of excellent plot points. I loved how the flashback events of Laguna tied in with the main story, and I loved every minute of the game. While the combat in the game was fun, it's leveling system was extremely flawed and the junction system was hit or miss, but they didn't hold the actual game down from being enjoyable and they won't keep this game from being my #1 favorite storyline.
Final Fantasy VII- Yes, we can all agree that this game gets more attention that it deserves, and it's often frustrating to see this game get ranked so well over the likes of FF VI and FF VIII. Not to say the game on it's own doesn't hold well. The story was filled with several interesting twists and arcs. It defiantly revolutionized RPG gaming, and while I'm not a fan of it's compilation, I do know that Final Fantasy VII's story is one that will stick with me for a long time.
Half Life series- Defiantly the most professionally written series in the gaming world. The real niche in the Half Life universe, is that due to the nature of Gordan's escapades, you're intentionally left in the dark about the events happening in the universe. However, people don't realize the extremely large backstory that comes with this game, spanning several places, worlds and even time lines. Add a great cast of perfectly designed and well acted characters that you get attached to throughout the game and you have a sure recipe for success.

6. Icewind Dale Series

solidfox - February 15, 2008 08:24 AM (GMT)

Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX Although the best draw to this game is the music.
Final Fantasy X simply because of its ending.
Final Fantasy XI Am MMORPG but AMAZING story line
Kingdom Hearts 1 Argubly one of the best endings.
Kingdom Hearts 2 One of the best sequals to any game I've played.
Suikoden III Spent soooo much time playing this.
Forgot to mention FF VI or III depending on where you live...so much better then VII just overlooked because it isn't 3d.
WHiTeFaLCoN - February 15, 2008 01:05 PM (GMT)

You know, I think I shoud dig up Baldur's Gate and Ice Wind Dale from wherever they are and try playing them again. I was about 12 years old when I last playerd either one and remember getting stuck at some point. Maybe my English wasn't good enough, I don't know..
Jiro - February 15, 2008 04:11 PM (GMT)
For now....No More Heroes.
The most bizarre video game I've played to date.
UrbanCombat - February 15, 2008 04:17 PM (GMT)
Kindom Hearts series
Metal Gear Solid series (The whole story is the best)
Final Fantasy X
Black and White
God of War
Oblivion
Tales of Symphonia
Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask (Twighlight Princess was OK)
These games had the best storyline in my opinion.
jc55 - February 16, 2008 12:15 AM (GMT)
This doesn't include the movies which were turned into video games, right?
357revolver - February 16, 2008 12:17 AM (GMT)
Radeon - February 17, 2008 07:25 PM (GMT)
Alot of you are forgetting Max Payne I love that game and the storyline.
RossSP - February 18, 2008 04:58 PM (GMT)
^Some have metioned it.
I'd say:
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Heart of Darkness
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
Hitman: Blood Money
Max Payne (The second one seemed like a cash-in, but it was alright)
Resident Evil 2 (The whole series is awesome, but this one has my fave story)
Silent Hill 2
Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation Best TR storyline ever.
Disciple - February 18, 2008 05:17 PM (GMT)
Resident Evil- What?! What is this? The only game to freak me out at the age of 9. 10 years ago this game made a decade long impression on me.
Kingdom Hearts- Truley a great game with a greater message.
Hotel Dusk- Wow. This game held me on edge the entire game, and the ending was damn near perfect.
Indigo Prophecy Though near the end the story did get a little wonky, I can't deny how this game held on to me the same way Hotel Dusk did.
I can't think of others at the moment.
SYN - February 18, 2008 11:41 PM (GMT)
halo trilogy
Max Payne2 (the first is good, but something about the second makes it better)
Legend of Dragoon *hooray for the other member who said it*
Advent Rising (too bad the remaining games never had the green light)
and Warcraft3, I loved Arthas's storyline into madness/Lich King, the rest is good, but Arthas has the best part.
kgray531 - February 19, 2008 12:33 AM (GMT)
Well MGS would be at the top of the list for me but other than that...
The Resident Evil Saga
Though Awesome as it was the storyline direction of 4 kinda bothers me.
The X-MEN Legends series / Ultimate Alliance
These games are brilliant in encompasing almost EVERY story arc ever in the X-MEN comic series into a long fleshed out single story that pays very close attention to MARVEL history.
DEF JAM Vendetta / Fight for NY
A great solid exciting series about underground streetfighting that has a very urban realistic tone, and a whole lotta celebs.
Splinter Cell
Metal Gear without the comic book element.
Street Fighter II
I know we're not suppose to include movies but the animated films just feel so much a part of the games that it makes the game more enjoyable.
DOOM
No Cutesy names, no princesses to rescue, no prophecies to fulfill, no friends to make along the way. Plain and simple, Hell is unloading it's entire army right in your backyard and you gotta kill every demon in existence starting with a pistol.
So screw dramatic musical scores and get the power metal goin! Doom is perfection of simplicity in storytelling!
Webbie - February 19, 2008 01:53 AM (GMT)
One word: BioShock.
I can't honestly say I've played all that many story driven games outside of the MGS series, but the story of BioShock, without a doubt, is by far the greatest I've ever actually gotten into outside of the MGS series.
Darth Big Boss - February 19, 2008 10:06 AM (GMT)
Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic - 1 and 2.
The best RPG I've ever played, and besides MGS, they have the best stories I've encountered in a videogame. And, might I add, I was never a fan of Star Wars until I played these games, except Episode 3 and Empire Strikes Back (The darker movies, the cutesy Episode 1 type makes me sick) but now I am a huge fan of the expanded universe.
This game has the best cast of characters in a videogame since Metal Gear Solid, and it has a villian that on par with Darth Vader. Not to mention the story is perfect, and has a jaw-dropping plot twist that is just as jaw-dropping as MGS's.
If you haven't played this game, you are truly missing out on a gem.
WHiTeFaLCoN - February 19, 2008 12:40 PM (GMT)
I can't believe I haven't mentioned this game: Okami! A bizarre game with a bizarre plot.
357revolver - February 19, 2008 02:53 PM (GMT)
i would also say:
gta-san andreas/vice city
resident evil series
enternal darkness-this game was just crazy, had me trippin out

A bit too bizarre plot. Fine, but not that great.
