Title: The word 'noob'
Description: Strange word...

WHiTeFaLCoN - February 15, 2008 01:10 PM (GMT)
I was just wondering (and I may sound like a fool asking), but what does the word 'noob' mean? Is it when you're a newbie or something?

micster - February 15, 2008 01:14 PM (GMT)
What a noob question q:

A noob is somewhat new who makes stupid mistakes in a game or uses easy kill on games [Like the M36 on MGO] aka 'noobcannons'

Whereas newbs are new people who ask for help and assistance and arnt retarded like noobs are who just run out and get sniped immediately.

Basically a noob is a complete idiot that brings shame to the human race and whom we must eliminate. :killer:

A newb however is someone new to something who has a positive attitude about things isnt afraid to ask for help and is basically a genuine person. :D

A noob will do all of the following

1.TyPe LiKe ThIs
2.Will Spam
3.Will Flame
4.Will basically disobey rules
5.Make stupid threads like DuDeZ I GoT HeRpEs
6.Is banned/warned
7.Will use improper speling and/or grammar
8.About 200 other mindless annoying things

And a Newb will do the complete opposite.

Noobs are what I eat for breakfest.

Sanderz - February 15, 2008 03:25 PM (GMT)
basically the definition is the best way any of us here could ever say.

but it's true, noobs are breakfast cereal in the gaming world. B)

rayofdoom - February 15, 2008 03:47 PM (GMT)
a noob/newby is some one new to a game and is not very good at it, thats it. but through the short time it has been in use the word has changed into a sort of insult for idiots who play cheaply and most of the time "noobs" themselves use the word over others i dont know why? maybe stamping their authority's in the noob community?

basically noob and newb (or newby) are all one in the same thing. just people spelled the word wrong and it stuck and most people have their own opinions on. i however to not like this word and never use it, i find it ignorant and annoying when shouted over MP online games.

UrbanCombat - February 15, 2008 04:01 PM (GMT)
It's an insult in the gaming world, for the reasons above. But even Pro players can fuck about and be 'noobish' but are not really a 'noob' if you see what I mean.

Yackemflaber - February 16, 2008 03:33 AM (GMT)
according to several sources, there is a notable difference between "newb" and "noob"

here's the best explanation:

Amazed that so many people here have already got it wrong. New people and Noobs are not the same. You do not have to be new to be a Noob. Thats what Newbs are. A Noob can be somebody that has done it for some time, but are just complete idiots that still don't understand the macanics.

In Team Fortress 2, in 2 fort I make turrets outside of the enemy spawning point. And I write noob on the ground. It never gets old.

:ph43r: ....But are more often then not...new.

That control alt delete comic pretty much answers everything in my opinion. :P

But yeah, In the gaming world newbs are to be respected for their ability to not be dicks and admit to faults....and should be helped. Noob can be someone new who believes they know about whatever it is they are doing...or a person who has been doing it for a while....but doesn't know what they're doing still...but very likely has been a noob from the beginning. :ph43r:

More often then not I consider people who've played a long time to be the real Noobs. After getting a chance like everybody else to know the game, they still don't know what they are doing. Were as the new people that act like they know what they are doing...they are just jackasses.

I remember the origin of the word "Newb" came from the online game Ultima or something like that.

The new characters would be called "New Beings" which was then shortened to "New B" and so forth.

WHiTeFaLCoN - February 18, 2008 09:50 AM (GMT)
Yeah well I hate the word. When I play online games, I'm called a noob even though I've done nothing wrong. I think its just become a simple insult with no meaning, and I consider it a word used by fools.

It is therefore my destiney to insult fools who use this word.

solidfox - February 19, 2008 06:44 AM (GMT)
It is far to often over used these days. People just throw it out as an overall insult, even if you are not a noob these days. if they simply don't like it, they will use it.

Being the leader of the biggest HNMLS in FFXI, I had to sort through the true noobs and so on, so you get a real grasp on the meaning.

White&Nerdy - February 19, 2008 06:47 PM (GMT)
The google definition of a noob is as follows- A person new to a concept or game. This is often used in chat as an insult against other players in a game (ex: "You're such a fracking NOOB"), but can be used in the gentler form to relay your inexperience (ex: "Hi, I'm sorry, but I'ma newbie at this. Can you please help me?").

So there you have it, you can not question googles unlimited knowledge.

sadistic_greyfox - February 19, 2008 07:00 PM (GMT)
I hardly ever used that word, the only time I ever use it is when joking around with internet friends. If I use that word in my day to day life I'm sure I'll get some strange looks but yeah it's overused and not really as funny as most people think.

White&Nerdy - February 19, 2008 07:08 PM (GMT)
I use gaming terminology all the time in RL. Possibly the reason why no-one likes me.

Red Queen - February 20, 2008 06:30 AM (GMT)
newbie - player that is new at the game
n00b - insulting term for players who can't play their game despite the experience

Some of gamers consider both terms insulting. :)

I'm gonna have to watch out for you :P

When first playing games, especially on Gamespy Arcade on the PC, the first time i've encountered the word ''noob'' was when i was in the chat lobby. Upon seeing this, I didn't care what it meant but when watching people play games and people calling players ''noob''s, i realized it meant someone did something stupid.

That's my description :P

I never knew their was a difference between Newb and Noob, I thought they were both synonymous with novice.
