Please just series not OVAs and why:

In no particular order lets kick of:

Trigun: what at first seems the story a aloof character then later in the show becomes a sadistic bad ass like many other anime shows turns out to be a completely new direction in the concept of a hero, just perfect.
Macross: (no Robotech people macross a bit of a separation there) I first saw this when I was 8 and it broke my heart when roy die, I was used to series like GI joe ( a classic on its own but not a drama master peace) where characters never die and stand in the middle of the fire. Well this is the main reason for me to love anime, this series accomplished what very few have been able to do, to deliver a pacifistic message in the context of real human interaction and emotion. Not like Macross Zero that seems Arjuna with big robots.
Full metal alchemist: A classic of modern anime, in a time when anime means been overly violent and with lots of sexual content Al and Edd came, to show us why anime is better than most films. Deep stories of human relations with a powerful message.
Shaman king: Although the manga is far better this series is huge for me. I love the overall theme and the characters.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory: I love every gundam I've seen but this is my all time fav. Finally is not the story of some kid falling in the cockpit and bitching the entire anime of why he has to fight. I really like the way the main character grows dark and how at the end he finds redemption after his failure.

Neon Genesis Evangelion- An incredibly engaging and deep story. Spanning a mere 25 episodes and one film, it managed to offer for of deepest plots I've ever seen offering several characters all with various forms of psyche, all of which are deeply explored. It has great action, a fantastic cast, and an ending that doesn't hold it's punches as it shows that nobody is safe from their destiny.

Deathnote- An incredibly intelligent and suspenseful anime. I've always been a fan of detective stories, and this takes it to the next level adding an otherly worldly twist in the form of the Death Note. The constant antics of L and Kira are always incredibly entertaining to watch, and it was an anime that surprised me every episode up until it's very end.

Samurai Champloo/Cowboy Bebeop- I'm putting these in one category because they both share resounding similarities when it comes to things like style and general concept . But they're both extremely original and enticing and kept me entertained consistently.

Some alright animes:

-Getbackers

-Cowboy Bebop/Samurai Champloo (as Gatsby noted)

-Trigun

This may make wolfie mad,but....
Devil May Cry.
I just really enjoy seeing Dante shoot the hell outta those hell...things...demons.
Lots and lots of blood keeps me coming back to it.
It's just that damned girl.... She is really,REALLY,annoying. What did they aim to do with her?!
Has anybody got any suggestions for a good anime series,(with blood like DMC and even with more wont hurt)
Regular non-violent anime kind of pisses me off. Like Naruto... Sure they fight but It's about as interesting as watching kids fight for some piece of chocolate. Which is basically what it is.

hellsing, vampire hunter d, berserk (if you can handle this one). This 3 are al blood, do not watch the last one if you have a weak persona.

Ninja scroll, fist of the north star.

Elfen Lied is one of the goriest animes I've ever seen, but it's not action oritened gore. But it's gore all the same, and you won't find it as plentiful(or as scary) as it is in Elfen Lied. And on top of that it has a pretty good story.

Roy Campbell - February 17, 2008 08:15 PM (GMT)
Well, I haven't watched many anime series becuase I just haven't got the time, but I would say Naruto (minus the fillers and sometimes annoying comedy) and Bleach are up there. I really have to start watching some anime series. It seems a bit of a drag compaired to films though.

Young Snake - February 17, 2008 08:23 PM (GMT)
Neon Genesis Evangelion, X, Hellsing, Black Lagoon and Ghost in the Shell are some of my big favourites. Been watching Cowboy Bebop and Full Metal Alchemist now, love both of them.

I don't think Berserk is all that full of blood. Well, sure more than in DMC anime, but that's not saying much.

Berserk is actually, at times, very good though. But the anime doesn't really get the thing finished. (Actually just barely started) You'll have to read the manga to continue from there on.

So is there an English release of the manga I've bee dying to know more about what happens next/

I don't have an anime to place at number 1 as I love all these shows and it's really hard for me to pick but here I go. I'm doing them as they come to memory so one isn't placed over the other.

Ghost in the Shell (Series and Movies) - it's a very deep anime that goes alot deeper than just action. The story is very well done and the Near futuristic setting mixed with some forms of urban decay really makes for a belieable setting.

Hellsing (Series, Manga, OVA's) - probably the first anime I got into, one hell of an action packed and gory series though. the story is about as best you'll get for the vampire genre. it was so damn awesome I made an AMV for it about a year ago. Alucard is the King of all things Badass.

Black Lagoon - It's like Cowboy Bebop but replace Bounty Hunters with Pirates and alot of Rum. It's very heavy on action and John Woo type action sequences. Any action fan will definitely get more than a kick out of the series (Revy FTW).

Cowboy Bebop - One of the earlier Animes I seen and absolutely loved it. Spike is such an amazing character than can be easily related to. he has been through so much in the past, tries to live a new life, but still seemes to get pulled back in against his will. all teh characters in this anime screamed personality, Jet being one of my all time fav's, fay and even Ein. you can get into this anime withought even being a fan of the series. Shows like Firefly seem to have taken inspiration from it.

Full Metal Alchemist (Series and Movie) - A really awesome series the journeys are awesome for this one, so much so that even filler eps are also enjoyable. this anime mixes everyone's dream of "what if I could turn this rock into everything I want?' with also questioning your self if you'll upset the balance of nature if you do change that rock into a toco XD. it's really a good one and i plan to rewatch it very soon.

Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin (Series, Ova'sand Final Movie) - I've seen the series when I was about 11 or so, at the time I had no idea what anime really was. I really enjoyed the whole Samurai story and it really pulled me in since I wasn't exposed to Japanese culture. Then a few years ago I decided to look for it on the net and once again I fell in love all over again. The story is so much deeper once you have a basic understanding of things in life. The Ova's will really make you fell something (well I guess those of you who once loved someone) and will really make you fell for Kenshin as his ideals really are not all that different from most of us.

Death Note - The guy who wrote it was a fucking genius although I stopped watching at the end of Ep 25. Filled with many twist and turns and is great for me since I really love detective stuff like Law and order. If you want your mind to be blown by the genius writing, do yourself a favor and check this one out.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Another anime I saw a while ago and only recently rewatched it. I'm really enjoying it when I do see it, hell of a ride when you do watch it though as most episodes are very intense. It's great stuff and looking forward to the new movies.

Johnyman - February 18, 2008 05:59 AM (GMT)
I just saw a trailer of Hellsing... Fucking twisted and wierd man...
But still, it's better to try for new and unusual things rather than boring normal stuff all over again. I'm currently downloading the complete Hellsing series, also saw a short clip from Berserk,it's not that bloody actually, but still enough to make a normal person feel sick.

P.S. What in the f*** is up with that sword licking in Hellsing?!

Jiro - February 18, 2008 07:13 AM (GMT)
Hellsing Anime is god awful.
The OVA is the true Hellsing.

Also I'm not a fan of Eva. It ripped off a slew of other ideas before it. It was just popular tis all.

I'm a Cowboy Bebop fan...as it was the only anime where they actually cared about the voice actors IMO.

Johnyman - February 18, 2008 07:18 AM (GMT)
Ok, I don't exactly know what OVA is, but the hellsing anime I'm downloading has a V-A on the title.

The Black Devil Of Outer Heaven - February 18, 2008 07:46 AM (GMT)
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
Demon Eye's Kyo
Death Note
Full Metal Panic?

.....To name a few.

rayofdoom - February 18, 2008 03:45 PM (GMT)
1. BERSERK: best story ive seen in Anime and Manga, its a gore fest of a med evil like fantasy, tells tails of friendship, love, hate and war! very twisted and yet awesome. the anime is slightly watered dawn from the manga but not too much (check it out)
2. Full metal alchemist: another great story, wit funny and violent moments as well.
3. Ranma1/2: a classic very funny and has some touching moments some times.
4. Nausica/ vally of the wind: probably the best Miyazaki movie though i cant choose all some of them, great classic.

I don't really see how that matters.

I mean Quinton Tarentino made a lot of his most successful films by taking other people's ideas an hybridizing them.

It's kind of like how The Departed by Martin Scorsasee rips off of Internal Affairs(a hong kong film), while obviously Martin got the idea from Internal Affairs, if you watch The Departed and Internal Affairs back to back you'll find that The Departed is an incredibly better film because Scorsasee added a level of depth to it that the previous film didn't have.

So while Eva might be a hybridization of a bunch of other ideas(and it is, it's filled to the brim with Freudian psychology references, Evangelical references, list goes on and on), the point is that it took all of those elements and made something better then all of it's predecessors. And even though I watch a lot of anime, I've never seen another anime that can match Eva in depth.

I've watched many but the only two I've ever really fallen for are
Dragonball Z (including Dragonball)
Gundam Wing

Disciple - February 18, 2008 05:56 PM (GMT)
Hmm, haven't been into anime in some time now but I like(d)

Outlaw Star- I loved this story. The cast of characters reminded me of Star Wars, which might be part as why I loved it so much...

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust- Freakin great. I realize this is a movie but I'm stating it anyway. I've always enjoyed the 'tinker' man's realtionship to D... ^_^

Cowboy Bebop- What can I say? I like this for the same reasons alot of others do.

Case Closed- Scooby Doo where are you? Seriously a cartoon that reminded me of that damned dog, but instead I actually liked this show. Sure after awhile the episodes might get old but meh, there all fun.

Gatsby - February 18, 2008 05:59 PM (GMT)
The only thing I didn't like about Case Closed was how at the end of every episode, the Killer would always provide this tear filled confession.

For once I would've just liked to hear

" Fuck you Conan, talk to my Lawyer."

I thought the universal century ended with Mobile Suit Victory Gundam.

The Universal Century ended with G-Saviour (live action movie)... But I was counting all Gundams from even the "alternate universes"...

Johnyman - February 19, 2008 07:59 AM (GMT)
Wow, Hellsing has actually become my favorite anime now. It's practically the definition of adult anime. Soundtrack suits it perfectly as well. And for the first time, the English voice acting is top notch! I was somewhat dissapointed that it wasn't Japanese audio, but it still works. Too bad it's only 13 episodes :(

Metal_girl_Solid - February 19, 2008 08:02 AM (GMT)
