Title: Beat Em Up Topic
Description: FIGHT!
WHiTeFaLCoN - February 19, 2008 01:23 PM (GMT)
Thought I'd open a topic where everyone can talk about games of the fighting kind. Aah, nothing is sweeter than the thought of beating the crap out of someone!
jc55 - February 19, 2008 01:28 PM (GMT)
Dude, the legendary titles include:
- Streets of Rage
- Tekken (3 especially)
- MK
- Soul Calibre
I'm sure there are more.
Disciple - February 19, 2008 01:32 PM (GMT)
Streets of Rage and Captain Commando. Easily the two best, er most fun. The best is God of War, if you would call it a beat 'em up.
WHiTeFaLCoN - February 19, 2008 03:56 PM (GMT)
When I say beat em up, I mean Tekken and Street Fighter. God Of War is a 3rd person action game.
Disciple - February 19, 2008 04:00 PM (GMT)
Meh, you're still kicking ass so I'm classifing it as one. I mean Hack and Slashers aren't to far from Beat 'em Ups in my book anyways.
I forgot about Splatter House.

Actually yes they are. In real fighting games it's just you, your opponent and the arena you fight in. Tekken, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat, Streetfighter and even Dragon Ball Z Budokai, they all fit in this genre.
But God Of War is sort of Hack & Slash/action game and it's NOT the same thing. You only have one character to play with, the opponents don't even follow the same mechanics as your character, there is no multiplayer... I mean, really! It's not even close to same as fighting games. That's same as calling MGS first person shooter, which it obviously isn't.
Anyway, my favourite is propably the Soul Calibur series. Very good games, but I'm not all too excited about them doing that Hack & Slash type of game for Wii.

Er, did you even read my post?
I never said Fighting game, I said Beat 'em Up. There's a difference. ;)
A BeU to me is a game like Captian Commando or Streets of Rage. A side-scroller from back in the golden days of Sega/Nintendo. God of War is a just evolution of the BeU in my eyes. Just in 3D rather than a side-scroller and has some RPGish elements tossed in.
A fighting game to me is the arena fighters as you say. You and one opponent.
Gatsby - February 19, 2008 05:21 PM (GMT)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 and the old X-Men arcade game. Accept no substitutions.

Well, I guess you are right there. Beat em up is kinda larger genre.

^No harm done.
Ah fuck, how could I forget the old X-Men arcade game?!
Damn, so many quarters slipped away into the machine during my childhood...

I definitely played more Mortal Kombat than any other fighting games. The storyline, the characters, the fatalities, everything just interested me a lot more about MK than any other fighting games. I've played 'em all for hours aside from Armageddon which, other than the updated Konquest mode and ton of characters, I considered it quite a disappointment (possibly because I collected all the items and unlocked everything all at once my first time through Konquest mode which left me with nothing else to do really). Scorpion was always my main guy.
Recently I've been playing Virtua Fighter 5 since it's the only decent fighter out so far that I know of for the 360. I've actually enjoyed it quite a bit, but most of the characters and the storyline are pretty dull IMHO. I like Brad Burns mainly because of his Kickboxing/Muay Thai. I've won nearly a thousand matches with him thus far, but I haven't played it in a while and I'm not sure if I'll ever get back to it.
I've never been much into Tekken. I played 3 a decent amount whenever a friend of mine brought it over. I was a big Eddy Gordo fan, which I'm sure most Tekken n00bs were, but other than that I really didn't care for the game. I played 5 the most of the series for sure, considering I actually owned that one, but like the rest of the series I just didn't really enjoy anything about it.
I've really never been into much for "beat 'em up" games, other than maybe Double Dragon on Nintendo.
King Snake - February 19, 2008 05:52 PM (GMT)
You haven't mentioned Devil May Cry 3, there is a lot of beating in the game :)
White&Nerdy - February 19, 2008 06:53 PM (GMT)
One of the best genres for multi-player I'd say. I prefer beat-em ups with weaponary so my favourite is the soul calibre series. Also Dead or Alive was good for the sweet graphics and the perfected breast physics.

(Fucks sake), WHEN I SAY BEAT EM UP, I MEAN AS IN DOA, TEKKEN, VIRTUA FIGHTER, SOUL CALIBUR, KING OF FIGHTERS, STREET FIGHTER, KOF, MORTAL KOMBAT STUFF LIKE THAT!!! NO BLOODY GOD OF WAR, NO F'ING DEVIL MAY CRY, NO MGS, OK?!!!

apparently there's been a little misunderstandin, cause you should propably have titled the topic "Beat em up (FIGHTING GAMES LIKE TEKKEN)" or something, cause the genre "Beat em up" apparently also includes games like "Double Dragon", "Dynasty Warrior", even "God of War" etc.
But anyway...
I'm quite sad about the fact that none of my friends really play any fighting games. We used to play some Soul Calibur about one year back, but it seems like they got bored with it (Or maybe I kicked too much ass). So, I haven't had many chances to test my SC skills in a long time.

Well the subtitle (or whatever) of this topic is FIGHT! so what's not to get in that?

So get into topic people!

Virtua Fighter 5 on Ps3 is probably the best Beat Em' Up I've ever played tbh, I hope the new Tekken can deliver on a similar level.
Roy Campbell - February 20, 2008 07:52 PM (GMT)
Tekken 2 is easily the best beat 'em up ever.
Other notible games are the other Tekken games, the Soul Calibur series (including Soul Blade), Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles: Tournament Fighters and the Street Fighter series.
And for crying out loud people, God of War is NOT a beat 'em up nor is Dynasty Warriors, nor is Devil May Cry, they're not even close to being beat 'em ups, its not even worth arguing, they are NOT. End of discussion.
Liquidus_Snake - February 20, 2008 08:05 PM (GMT)
Tekken and Mortal Kombat series are my favorite.....I think its just the charcters that standout more in those two games than any other Beat 'em up games (Jin and Scorpion being my favs')
I've tried Soul Caliber, but the charcters just didn't get me hooked, so I didn't take alot of interest in the game..

Kazuya wins the award for the hardest cunt ever in Beat Em' Up history.
Aquila - February 20, 2008 10:34 PM (GMT)
Never really played Beat Em Ups. First ever was the classic Street Fighter, best beat em up I think I've ever played. Maybe Soul Caliber comes close but I'm not sure.
I'm going to give Soul Caliber 4 & Street Fighter 4 a go though - hope they're good

Apparently you never tried to defeat M.Bison on SF2 for SNES using Zangief or Dhalsim on the hardest difficulty. WAY harder.

No it doesn'tIt clearly claims in the article above that they are fighting games, under the title hack and slash and strongly hints it in the article you posted by saying they are hack and slash games which they are. They are
not beat 'em ups. Never have been, never will be.
As if wikipedia should determine the fate of this debate anyway.

| In this instance, hack and slash refers a to sub-genre of beat 'em up where player characters use edged weapons as the primary form of combat (weapons in regular beat 'em ups are usually blunt weapons that are found during gameplay). Generally these games have a fantasy or medieval setting. |
That came from the link you posted Roy. -_-
As to the subject of the title, it says Beat Em Up, and it's clear now that there is a distinct genre, if you will, with the same title.
@Whitefalcon- If you wanted a topic strictly about Fighters, you should have titled the damned thread 'Fighter' topic. As I have explained already, the title lead me to believe this was about the aforementioned type(s) of game(s).
Helikaon - February 22, 2008 12:42 AM (GMT)
I'm going to fall on the side of Disciple on this. "Beat 'Em Up" refers to the good old days of side scrolling games where you err beat up people. I.E. Final Fight. The evolution of which has given us wonderful games like Devil May Cry and God of War.
WHiTeFaLCoN - February 22, 2008 05:51 PM (GMT)
I wish you people would stop being so fucking padantic!
I've been watching a Tekken 6 trailer on YouTube and I have a question: the new character Leo, male or female? I can't tell.
