Title: Raven's Hint
Description: What do you think he was trying 2 say?

"Shalashaska" - February 21, 2008 11:37 AM (GMT)
What do you think Raven was trying to say to Snake?

God Told Me to Skin You Alive - February 21, 2008 11:46 AM (GMT)
Seriously? He was hinting at the DARPA Chief not being who he claimed to be, and (if I remember correctly) that something might be leading Snake on.

'Nothing is as it seems,' is the general message.

Young Snake - February 21, 2008 03:34 PM (GMT)
Just as GTMTSYA said, Raven was trying to tell Snake that the man that died in front of him in the prison cell was not the DARPA Chief, but in fact Decoy Octopus, a member of Foxhound. This again would have Snake wondering why Decoy Octopus disguised himself as the Chief prior to Snake infiltrating his cell.

I'm not sure exactly what hint Shalashaska's speaking of, probably because I haven't played MGS1 in about, oh, forever.

However, I have a question of my own regarding something Raven says that maybe someone can help me out with. Again, it's been a long time since I've played MGS1 so my question could possibly be quite similar to Shalashaska's question, but I don't believe it is.

Just before you face Vulcan Raven he puts a 'mark of death' on Snake, and his last words are "my spirit will be watching you... understand?"

Simply put, I don't understand, lol. I'm sure I'd understand if I owned MGS1 and went through it again, but I won't have it until The Essential Collection is released sometime next month. Can anyone help me here?

Young Snake - February 24, 2008 06:11 PM (GMT)
I don't exactly know what he means with "the mark of death", but ravens are associated with death in many cultures and depictions. In this situation however, the raven is tracing Snake's roots to his ancestors in Mongolia. "Blood from the East" flows within his veins.

Raven says his spirit will be watching Snake. If you've seen the MGS4 Trailer with the supposed "young Snake", you'll see that a masked Snake approaches a couple of statues. A raven is sitting on one of them. Snake sees it and smiles, an obvious sign that he remembers Vulcan Raven's words from MGS1. He's still watching over Snake.

Shyne-Bryght - February 24, 2008 06:37 PM (GMT)
Vulcan Raven is described as a 'shaman', so you should expect some kinda voodoo-magicy stuff about him. He is a very ocnfusing character in his speech, because before telling Snake he has a 'mark of Death' he also tells Snake somethign like 'you path is endless, no matter how many corpses you crawl over'. But I think Vulcan is one of few who can see Snake's own agendas and feelings, so he kind fo warns him that he won't reach this 'goal', and the mark of death part might mean he will die trying, I certainly hope MGS4 will shed a lot of light on this, it already hinted at the inclusion of Raven with the raven in one of the first trailers, one flies past ands Snake acknowledges it.

You just blew my mind. I never even thought about that, all I ever noticed was the fact that Snake was young. (While my mind was accusing Kojima of jumping the shark)

I was occupied with the "young Snake" the first two times I watched it as well. It took me a third effort to really notice that raven. It seemed to be guiding Snake, which is kind of weird, as that is usually a trademark of doves.

Interesting stuff. I only watched that particular trailer once or twice I believe, but I never noticed a raven. I've been wondering ever since I heard of the "Raging Raven" if maybe there'd be some sort of a connection between her and Vulcan, of course it's hard to say at this point. Time will tell I suppose.

On a completely unrelated note, Helikaon, what's happening on the 28th? :D

I doubt it. I mean, anything's possible in the MGS universe, but the codename "Raging Raven" is simply a reference to both Foxhound in MGS1 and the Cobra Unit in MGS3. Raging = The Fury, Raven = Vulcan Raven.

It's still a mystery how Liquid Ocelot knew about the Cobra Unit though, if it was he who designated TB&TB unit with their codenames.

And I think it's Heli's birthday on the 28th. ^_^

In Sons of Liberty, the unexplained toy model of Raven could harken back to this too, another sign of Raven watching over Snake. You first see it in the Tanker area, and again in the submerged section of Shell 2 as Raiden, where Snake was patrolling before the bomb went off.

UrbanCombat - February 28, 2008 01:19 PM (GMT)
I don't think that was hinting at anything about Raven watching over Snake just a gimmick.

Helikaon - February 28, 2008 04:48 PM (GMT)
Hmm I don't know, whenever we have seen the raven since theres been some form of danger afterwards, for example the yawning guard in the engine room or the mines in the core.

He was Saying to Snake: "Not everything is as it looks."
It was a Hint because he knew Liquid was disguising as Master Miller!

The Cobra Unit was known by Kicking the Axis out. It was because of the Cobra Unit the Allies won WWII!

It's kinda obvious Liquid read a History book...

Invisininja - March 19, 2008 02:26 PM (GMT)
the cobra unit and the boss were never in history books, as it would have severly lowered the morale of the population, as they would have thought that the soldiers were dying for no reason, also, the cobra unit was a secret unit.

Well not in books to civilians.... To org's like the CIA... Also The Boss was known by that in Russia so why wouldn't it be in the History books?

Splitter Snake - April 3, 2008 07:23 PM (GMT)
Because, MGS3 even basically says that history books are full of shit; something I've tried telling my history teachers for years.

Can someone post a link to this trailer? Thanks

It's a Cryptic Metaphor!

No, watching too much Metal Gear Awesome, sorry.

Soriddo Suneku - April 6, 2008 05:11 PM (GMT)
Care to elaborate on that?

Care to elaborate on that?

It's from the flash based cartoon 'Metal Gear Awesome'

When Vulcan Raven appears in the cartoon, the only thing he says is 'CRYPTIC METAPHORE'

Thought it was quite hilarious myself.

scorpion_rayne - April 8, 2008 09:23 AM (GMT)
Raven said that Decoy Octopus was the Darpa Chief, not Donald Anderson. when snake met him at least.

-Shalashaska- - April 23, 2008 09:40 PM (GMT)
I think when he said the mark of death is upon you, he meant that death will always chase him, not for his life, becuase death will always be in his path. What he means by that, is that war will always be, death to his enemies, and death to some of his comrades, will always be in his path, and well eventually he may end up dying too. Thatīs at least what i think, that he wonīt find peace. This also relates with him telling Snake that his past was endless.
