Depp didn't win the Oscar, :( but do you think he should have won?

I'd say this is more of a topic for the Movies forum.

While he is one of the best actors out there imo, I don't think so. He hasn't played in a role worthy of any Oscar this past year. While he was good in all his roles, the character he played weren't Oscar worthy. There were far better choices this year.

I'm guessing this was for Sweeney Todd, so no I don't think he should have won an Oscar for that role.

I'll be pretty surprised if Johnny Depp ever wins an Oscar.

I mean, it won't happen. Johnny's the kind of person who likes to do the films with the cult followings, sure he's an actor with immense skill. But in the end all these contests are just giant popularity contests, and these awards always lean in favor of the critic point of view. So it was pretty obvious from the beginning that Daniel Day Lewis would grab Best Actor, and there was no doubt in my mind that Javier Bardem would snag Best Supporting Actor.

Really, Sweeney Todd isn't an Oscar worthy performance, he's a great actor, but like I said, based on all the films he's been in it doesn't seem like he'll ever be slated for a role that takes Best Actor.

Ah, now that it's in perpective then I'd still say that he deserved an Oscar. He's a great actor so....

I voted yes: I think he's a good enough actor, but like Gatsby said, I don't think he ever will. The movies he starts in just don't put him in a position to win something like an Oscar, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't mind, it's definitely a conscience decision on his part to do so.

Exactly what I was thinking. Depp is one of only a few "Actors" out there at all. Most of these guys play themselves in every movie. Or at least play the same charicter. Denzel Washington is always the same exact charicter, just in different clothes. George Clooney, always the same. I could go on and on but I think you get the point. Jack Sparrow, Sweeney Todd, Willy Wonka, Edward Scissor Hands, the casual movie watcher probably wouldn't even know this was the same guy. All completely different personalities from the same guy.

I voted yes. However, I would've chosen "maybe" if it was a choice. I think he is a great actor as well, but he doesn't match up to other actors that've been doing movies for awhile now.

I don't think Johnny Depp should've won an Oscar. When you're such a famous actor, it's more about popularity. I mean, every movie that includes the Johnny Depp is bound to win an Oscar? I haven't watched the movie Sweeney Todd, perhaps I will in the future, but nonetheless, if he had won the Oscar for a movie that wasn't criticallly acclaimed for him, then he shouldn't win it at all. That's my opinion, but then again I haven't been watching Sweeney Tood.
