Okay, a disclaimer that for any other game/situation I wouldn't care, because let's face it games have to sacrifice reality for entertainment.

However recently Alone In The Dark has recently released two videos advertising/showcasing/bragging about their so-called "real world rules"
to the average person the stuff they feature in this video is really cool, and for the most part it is. The problem that I have is that they're trying to call it "real world rules".

Here's the few problems I noticed that I remember off the top of my head:
You cannot shoot a gas-filled tank with a pistol bullet and puncture it, much less make it explode in that one shot.
If you hold a huge metal pipe by the end, unless you're some kind of bodybuilder it's gonna be hard to hold it straight and rotate it all around your head without a steady center of gravity/amazing strength.
No one in their right mind picks up a chair and sets it on fire completely unprotected to use it as a torch.
If you shoot a huge metal door with a pistol bullet, it ain't gonna cave in as much as they feature.

So yeah, in games this is acceptable, I just get annoyed that they're trying to pass it all of as "real world rules" when any person who really looks at it knows that it's just another game with fancy physics and programming

I think the term "real world rules" applys to the physics in the ame. Not the game properties themselves. Like the game engine. How water reacts with the environment, the dynamic lighting, and how the fire interacts with the environment.

I haven't seen any Alone in the Dark trailers, but I have seen many 'The Force Unleashed' trailers and the physics engine in that looks breathtaking.

As for 'Real World Rules', I have to disagree. Real world sucks hence why we play games. We don't want games to be like real world - and I doubt they ever will which is fantastic.

Well, actually these great technological advancements in video games are there to simulate real world like feel in games. Take a look at GTA IV, MGS4, Assassin's Creed for example or maybe even your racing games .. although these games have the 'video game' element in them they are almost realistic in a sense - be it physics or graphics or npc reactions. To totally discard "Real World Rules" from a game could be disastrous and to implement them to their maximum potential will have varied results depending on the theme of the game.

I don't think everyone plays video games to escape from reality well, atleast I don't. I play games to be entertained - be it in an extremely over top nerd core sci-fi game or a life simulation what matters to me is I R ENTERTAINED!

It's a game, they can't be perfect. If it were COMPLETELY real world rules, it'd be too hard. I mean, let's face it, no one would be able to survive if the world was infested with zombies or something.

That aside, the game looks amazing. The inventory system is very unique (all your items hang from the inside of your jacket!)

Also, there seems to be a huge amount of possible item combinations, ones that I'd never even think of. Like puncturing a bottle and throwing it to make a trail of oil that you can light up and set ablaze. (although the line the oil makes is perfectly straight, so it's a little unbelievable)
