Title: MGS PC Startup Crash
Description: Help!

squiggle - March 15, 2008 08:14 AM (GMT)
Hi,

Just installed MGS on my PC, and I'm getting an error whenever I try to run the game.
At first I got:

"MGS has detected that the graphics accelerator does not support the functions needed to run the game in hardware mode. The game will run correctly but only in software mode."

Okay then, so I try to run it again and I get:

"Game crashed during previous initialization, game starting software rendering."

Whenever I try to run the game now, I get that error.

I've tried running the game in compatibility mode, but I still get the same error.
Also, once MGS fails to open, my browser (I'm on Windows XP Pro SP2 btw)'s font is bold. Yuck

I have a feeling this will have something to do with my videocard (GeForce 6600GT), or possibly the drivers.

Can anyone help me? Hopefully this doesn't turn out to be a waste of $20 (Yay for keeping MGS on my trademe.co.nz watchlist!)

Funny i got the same problem, im replying just to let you know theres someone else and here are my specs

I even tried downloading a cracked exe to play without the CD but i still get same error
GeForce drivers updated so far (April 1).

Ive read about some people having problems with XP Profesional but not on earlier O.S.
also read they have to deactivate some fixes and "effects" on the Video card "manager"

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+
1 Gb RAM
Windows XP Profesional SP 2
nVidia GeForce 7300 GT

Anyone got a solution!?

Edit: Ppl say its an 8 bit thing nVidia stopped supporting somewhere on the GeForce series... any fix?

Just an error cause you have a newer graphics card past 1995 :P

Tbh, the pc port is crap. Just use epsxe. :P

MGS does not support the newest drives from NVidia and if my "research" is correct it doesnt support the graphics cards after 5 series. (6xxx series and so on...)

I had a computer with a GF 5500 and MGS was playing just fine. After that I bought another PC with two 8600GT's on it and MGS was unable to start.

Maybe there is a patch that fixes that but I dont know for sure.
I searched a little but did not find anything.

Worked fine on my Laptop's 7400.

If we need to run it in software mode, doesnt that mean the cpu is basically rendering the graphics?

Hardware mode is just not MGS -

So, if the game is set on HARDWARE Mode, the graphics will be better? Personally, from that picture above my comment, it seems as if so, as I'm forced to use Software Mode.

Here's a picture I took, pretty much the same spot.

Sorry, I can't edit my post, I can't see the EDIT button but, it looks like we have the same problem, the black bar on the bottom of the game, you know how to fix that?
