but heres my question im playing mgs again and im confused, at the moment im in the prisoners cell and just finished talking with the colonel and Naomi and snake says that he kills big boss??? basically my question is is the whole metal gear story one big story or is that series completely different from the Solid series?

Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake are both canon to the Metal Gear Solid story. Solid Snake killed Big Boss in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, so that's why he says he killed Big Boss.
The storyline order of the games are:
Metal Gear Solid 3:Snake Eater (1964)
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (1970)
Metal Gear (1995 i think)
Metal Gear 2:Solid Snake (1999)
Metal Gear Solid (2005)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2007 and 2009)
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2014)
Any game not listed is not part of the storyline.

ya i'd say solidnsake1993 got it right. snake killed Big Boss in MG2 but Big Boss is referenced several times in MGS1 because that was one of Liquid's group's demands to Washington.
