Title: Bioshock & Doom
Description: Rapture Vs Hell
WHiTeFaLCoN - April 12, 2008 01:30 PM (GMT)
Bioshock was a game that was made to be original with new ideas, but I think it got a lot of influence from Doom 3.
- Ryan & Dr Bertruger: Power mad psychos that run the place
- Rapture & Mars Research Station: Places built so scientists can work without governments, morals or religions slowing them down, resulting in bad shit happening
- Atlas & Sgt Kelly: Both seem to be on your side but then turn out to be bad guys near the end
- Audio logs: Give you a clue or a code and reveal more of the plot, can be found if you look carefully
- Forboding atmosphere: You don't know what'll jump at you when you least suspect it
I'm not saying Bioshock is just a big copy cat but I think some thanks should be given to id software for making Doom 3. Without it, I don't think we would have Bioshock.

true it does have similarities and Doom may have very well influenced it. Interesting idea
Draketopher - April 12, 2008 01:46 PM (GMT)
yes, Very interesting. Never saw that before. I say credit is due. I'll have to replay Doom now to see more similarities.

It's actually Doom 3 that got a lot of its ideas from System Shock 2. SS2 had audio logs, a foreboding atmosphere and the whole "good person is actually bad person" thing. Ken Levine worked on SS2 and intended BioShock to be its spiritual successor so that's where all this stuff comes from, not Doom 3.

Power Mad Leaders? I must have seen that somewhere. Like Castle Wolfenstein 3D. it had Hitler. Won't get much more power mad than that. Heck, this is the MGS Fora, we have Volgin, as well as Solidus. And the Patriots. And probably tons of B movies from the 80's...
Secret Labs? You're complaining about both games having secret labs? I'm pretty certain there were secret labs for the antagonist. Isn't the evil scientist with his lab one of the oldest ones in the book?
Betrayal. Betrayal. Wow, I guess that betryal is a pretty new thing to be featured in games. It's not like there was any betrayal in Metal Gear, or in Metal Gear: Solid Snake. There definetly wan't any betrayal in MGS, nor MGS2, and absolutely none whatsoever in MGS3...
Audio Logs, we've covered that with System Shock 2, right?
Foreboding Atmosphere? I guess that Ravenholm is out of the picture? As well as System Shock 2?

Without Doom, we probably wouldn't have any FPS games at all.
Doom completely revolutionised the FPS genre, it should be given thanks by every FPS game.
WhySoSerious - April 20, 2008 05:44 AM (GMT)
Yea Doom is awesome. I still cant believe that Bioshock got game of the year last year. I mean its good but not near as good as like COD4 or Mass Effect.
Null - April 20, 2008 08:18 AM (GMT)
^ Nay, Bioshock is amazing. Much better than COD:4 and Mass Effect imo.
Probably the best FPS ever made.

No, I would say COD4 and the HL games are much better than Bioshock.
You see, saying a game is the best has no validity. Its simply your favorite FPS. Sure as hell ain't the best.
Null - April 20, 2008 08:24 AM (GMT)
Maybe thats why I put 'imo' after it.
Do I have to say imo anyway?
Surely everyone is smart enough to realise what I am posting is my opinion. I hate it when people try and correct me or argue with me for the sake of it.
Never once did I say that it was fact. So it'd be nice if you dropped the condescending tone.
iAn - April 20, 2008 08:36 AM (GMT)
Sorry if I yapped at ya. Its just a pet peeve of mine.
Null - April 20, 2008 08:40 AM (GMT)
It's cool man, no worries.
Shyne-Bryght - April 20, 2008 09:46 AM (GMT)
Bioshock is a damn good game, I can see the similarities both from Doom and the touches brought back that made System Shock 2 so damn good, but Bioshock still uses them in a way that makes the game an original, enjoyable experience, we all loved the 'things could jump out at you anywhere', but not in such scary graphical detail and loveliness ;)
WhySoSerious - April 20, 2008 05:16 PM (GMT)
Bioshock had no multiplayer which just single play FPS getting really boring really fast. And was too easy to beat in the same day you get it.
Ultimetal - April 20, 2008 11:49 PM (GMT)
If you beat BioShock in the same day you bought it then you shouldn't have rushed through it. Exploring all the levels fully, picking up and listening to audio logs etc. is where the real meat of the game is, and there's no way you could do all of that within one day unless you were sitting there for 12-20 hours.
iAn - April 21, 2008 04:43 AM (GMT)
To someone with a short attention span, the game is just not addicting enough.
Its a good game, but I hated it's repetitive combat with its weak feeling weapons. I mean, I loved the visuals and the retro upgraded gun looks, but it just wasn't really animated the way I hoped it would be animated.
FearHeldDear - April 21, 2008 05:50 PM (GMT)
Haven't played Bioshock, but Doom 3 was fucking gnarly.
WhySoSerious - April 23, 2008 07:52 PM (GMT)
I did get all the audio tapes, upgraded ever gun. I dont like rushing through games. It was good just wasnt good enough for me to keep. After I beat it on the hardest mode I was like wow this isnt fun at all so yea. I was really mad when I heard it got game of the year I was like how? It was so easy to beat and no multiplayer it didnt make any sense to me.
Null - April 23, 2008 08:15 PM (GMT)
Tbh I don't believe you WhySoSerious.
Theres no way you explored the game and beat it in hard in just one sitting.
Timeaisis - April 23, 2008 08:50 PM (GMT)
Pshh...Bioshock was so much better than Doom 3. I agree with Null all the way. I guess it isn't the best "FPS" in a sense that its not the greatest shooter ever made, but its better than most all of the FPSs I've played...

Negative.
WhySoSerious - April 24, 2008 02:22 PM (GMT)
No dude I'm serious I beat Bioshock the same day I got it. It wasnt hard at all. And it wasnt one of those games that I could go back and play after I beat it. But whatever dude you dont have to believe me.
WHiTeFaLCoN - April 24, 2008 06:29 PM (GMT)
I don't believe you either.

GOOD POST.
Since I already made it pretty much clear it was my opinion, you elitist gaming types can quite rightly fuck off.
Unless you're going to add to the topic.

This is true. BioShock is the spiritual successor of System Shock 2, if anything Doom 3 ripped off Ken Levine.
Also, BioShock is the best game ever made. Gameplay, graphics, sound, story, characters, weapons... There is not one fault within the entire game that wasn't fixed with the patch.
Acer - April 30, 2008 03:29 PM (GMT)
Maybe the games share common stuff, but they are good. Right?

Psh. Doom 3 ripped off Doom 1.
/sarcasm.
WhySoSerious - May 4, 2008 02:15 AM (GMT)
I really cant understand why some of you people think Bioshock is the greatest game ever. It wasnt even close and never will be close.
