Title: Do Reviews Sell Games?

I saw this nice article on IGN today.

Do Reviews Sell Games?

Judging by the best selling games of 2007 and the top reviews, it looks as though a good review doesn't mean the game will be successful. It all down to how much hype the game gets and the current trends. Just look at Need for Speed for example. That game is dire and yet it gets the 5th best selling game. Assassin's Creed is one of the most hyped up games ever but in the end, the game didn't deilver, yet it still takes 8th spot for highest selling games.

And then look at Super Mario Galaxy, the Orange Box, Bioshock etc , they all got amazing reviews yet didn't sell nearly as well.

Considering the fact that we now have channels like G4, I think the time of GamePro and GameInformer are kinda over. Nowadays, I'm pretty sure people forgo the reviews and stick to the trailers. With the next-gen capabilities of the newer consoles, I think people are convinced the games with the best graphics are gonna be the best games and are ignoring the gameplay details before they pick it up.

Oh really?

For me AC delivered everything it promised.

Anyways. In my case, no. My decision whether or not I will buy a game is made when I see the first finished shots of the game. I don't think I've ever purchased a video game, watched a movie in the cinemas or bought a CD based on the reviews of a journalist. At the end of the day, a review is one persons opinion.

Other things need to be taken into account with that list though. The top 7 seven best sellers are all franchise games.

Watch G4...No thanks. I hate everything about it..... I still rely on online reviews to help me decide on my purchases.

G4 is pretty good but it's ermm...

I prefer to read reviews with pics and stuff in a magazine or on the interview as well, but the reason why I get a little upset with G4 is that there is this show that doesn't stay on topic about the game!

I used to watch Techtv's Xplay when I was a freshman in high school, it was cool until the merger with G4, then all the reviews went down from there. All their reviews comprised of cheap shots and jokes rather than focusing on the game. I don't really trust 1 reviewer, I try to get reviews from at least 5 sources before I buy a game.

people who are loyal to a series will buy the game even if it got a 1 out o 5. guranteed

Eh, more or less no. If you are one of the few people who watch G4 you suck

I pretty much only base my opinion from GT's review.

Used to listen to Gamespot when Greg Kasavin was still around back then...

I pretty much buy a game if it looks fun, not by reviews. I've never been disappointed.

Well, good for you. I've bought many games because I though the games looked fun too. Oh how foolish I was...

Thank God for the video rental stores.

I think the best way is just to go out and rent it yourself or borrow it from a friend and formulate your own opinions on whether you want to buy it or not.

Well, I accidentally pressed enter. I meant to say after close speculation, sorry.

I don't care for reviews on anything. Basically I know right from the bat weather I like it or not. Cause...well frankly in the end I'm the only person thats gonna know what I truly like, right?

There have been many games that I've played and went to look some stuff up about it online and saw bad reviews about it. And yet I loved the game. And the other way around, games I've heard large raves about, I found to be sucktacular.

So in the end I don't find reviews to effect my buy.
