Title: Will we ever grow tired?
Description: of the current hot series?
Yackemflaber - April 16, 2008 03:16 AM (GMT)
Do you guys think any of the currently "hot" series of games (Burnout, GTA, MGS, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, etc) could ever become boring and outdated? Or do you think that as long as people are creative and the technology keeps updating that we'll never get tired of playing these games over and over in their updated formats?
I bring this up in relation to Halo 3 being basically the same as Halo 2, and because Geoff Keighley (sp?) in a GT episode of the Bonus Round asked some guys if they thought GTA could ever succumb to the same fate

I grew tired of GTA and Halo long ago. Halo 2 turned me off from that series. San And. Was the end of the line for me and GTA.
Mgs I could never get burnt out of cause its always a new great story.
Final Fantasy, never cause each game is different and new. Just isn't possible cause you aren't going over the same premise.
Resident Evil had gotten a lil dull to me but RE4 was a great revamp of a the series and made me interested in it again. So now I'm looking forward to 5, where as I hadn't cared much about the wait for 4.
Out of em all though, I doubt I could ever get tired of FF cause it is always different.

I think solidfox is right. Series only grows boring if it just recycles the same thing all over again, unfortunately this is quite true too often.
For example, Halo sequels are, whatever you say, basically the same thing without much evolution. But for some reason, most people seem to like buying the same game with different covers.

i would have to say that final fantasy wont ever get boring for me either. i could play ff7 20 times and still want t keep going

I reckon Burnout and GTA could get stale. Maybe Resident Evil too if they keep going.
GTA gets better technically every times, but the premise could soon grow stale, same with Burnout. Though people seem to be happy with constantly-recycled racing games (e.g- Need for Speed).
MGS is probably going to finish after 4, so it probably won't go stale.
And as has been stated, Final Fantasy comes up with a brand new story every time, it's not a series more a set of volumes.

Yea Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid I could keep playing forever without them getting old.

GTA can get boring if you play it too long, but after a hiatus you find yourself back in the game. I can never grow tired of MGS games though, and seeing as MGS4 is gonna be huge, it seems even less likely.

GTA definately- I don't understand why it continues to be such a big hit, but I guess there's always a legion of ten year olds waiting with each following sequel.
Halo- I dunno, I haven't played 3 enough to be sick of it (Read: Only played a few times) but I'm well over 2.
Final Fantasy I've never gotten into, but I'm eagerly awaiting Kingdom Hearts III- weird.
Resident Evil 5 is gonna be sick, hopefully. After that they may need yet another direction.
Devil May Cry, I think, should probably be put to rest, but I'll have to play 4 first to see if there's been any significant changes.
Mario Kart- the new one better be good. Heh.
That's all for now. ;)

Yea man I'm ready for any kind of info or trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3 and also Resident Evil 5. Dude if you havent played Devil May Cry 4 yet its really not any different from the other ones its still real easy to beat even on devil hunter mode.

I think with GTA4 the premise/idea has been completely revamped. Around GTA:SA I was getting pretty tired of the GTA series, too immature, and each game looked too much like the previous one.
But with the coming of GTA4, everything is that much more darker and mature. I think that everyone will fall back in love with the GTA series when this game hits.

Well, one day, these series will end, but if you look at the bright side, other game series will start and it's interesting how it will start.
However, it is hard to let go of Resident Evil or MGS like that, for me that is.
I can never get bored with RE or MGS,and to be honest, I never played a FF game.
Red Queen - April 20, 2008 03:44 PM (GMT)
Well TBH, FF was always overrated shit for me (no offense to the fans). :P
But yesh, only few games will remain evergreens and be played for generations, like Startcraft for example.
I do believe that the series you've brought up will certainty remain in people's memories when, but being flooded with so many material, none of the are just so special to be permanently sealed into our memory and be the games that constantly maintain our interest. :)
So yes, in my opinion they will be forgotten eventually.

GTA will never get old. There's just something about the games thats just addicting. The story is decent, the characters are full of life, the humor is there... and the gameplay is ALWAYS stellar.
I'm the type of gamer who loves to explore and simply play the game to death and try to break the rules of the programming.
GTA is perfect for that. Esp. with GTA4's multiplayer... its gonna be awesome.
Practically unlimited replayablilty for us gamers with ADD/ADHD.
Final Fantasy got old after FFX, imo.
RE DID get old, and stayed shitty up until RE4...
MGS will probably burnout after 4...
yeah...
La Li Lu Le Lo - April 20, 2008 04:33 PM (GMT)
I guess, but as long as developers continue to reinvent franchises they will continue to feel fresh. RE4 again is a great example. Nintendo and SE, I'm looking at you. Your games are starting to feel stale.

The thing that makes GTA so popular it's becasue it allows you to do so many things that are forbidden in real life, so the game itself resembles the freedom almost any individual would like to have.
Like a fiction to relieve you of your real life frustrations.

That and the fact that its fun trying to break the rules of the programming. Like finding "Blue Hell", or just trying to do things that would defy the game's physics engine... etc.
