Saw this a while back. TBH most Spider Man games have been a disappointment ever since SNES. (the carnage game was fun when I was a lil kid).

But this game actually looks promising. Lets hope. There is so much room for a good game with Spider Man. Lets hope it finally lives up to its potential.

it's based on the web-slinging comic book legend himself, giving the developers at Shaba and Treyarch a great deal of leeway in crafting an entirely new plot

I stopped reading at this point. I will only be satisfied when a developer creates a Spiderman game directly based on the major arcs of the comic, in other words I want a godamn 'The Amazing/Spectacular Spiderman' game. Creating new storyline just doesn't work when it comes to Spiderman, sure you can interpret pre-existing storylines in a number of different and interesting ways; by all means please do. But please don't try to write your own Spiderman story. The only man who could ever (and has made) make this work is Brian Michael Bendis. Until they hire him for story work, I'm steering well clear of this.

April 17, 2008 - Like a stream of light, he arrives just in time -- Spider-Man is coming back to videogames.

Activision announced today that Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is currently in the works from Shaba Games and Treyarch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Nintendo DS, Wii and PC. Although it wasn't ready to say too much about the action-adventure game, Activision did tell us that Web of Shadows will be set in a free-roaming, open-ended New York that combines web slinging with customizable superpowers. There will be the traditional combo attacks on the ground, but the game will also feature a brand new emphasis on vertical combat as gamers take Spidey to the skies and duke it out with bad guys.

However, it might not just be foes who are getting socked in the jaw. According to Activision, Spider-Man's latest adventure will let players choose how they want to play -- if folks want to be the friendly neighborhood superhero, they can, but they can also ignore missions and be the anti-hero who is only looking out for himself. Marvel heroes and villains will pop up in the adventure, and gamers will have the ability to change sides as they see fit.

Activision is keeping its lips sealed about what Spider-Man is up against in the new game but we know it's a threat to the entire world and that it can do some real damage to New York. From the one screenshot and teaser trailer, it looks like Spidey's up against a number of villains who can redecorate buildings and create giant oozing black tendrils. The black gunk and the alien-looking dudes crawling on the side of the building in the teaser makes us think symbiote, but there's no way to know what's going on at this point.

Still, you might be able to get some inside info if you're lucky enough to be at the New York Comic-Con this week. At Activision's booth, the company will be holding voiceover auditions for the title. Videos of the performances will be posted on the Spider-Man: Web of Shadow's website where the community will vote for who they want in the game.

Be sure you check IGN tomorrow for an exclusive Q&A with the folks behind Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, and feel free to hit up Yahoo!'s coverage of this morning's news.

Unfotunately, I dont thing any Spiderman game will ever match the brilliance of the PSone title. Ill never forget taking on the foes in my Captain Universe costume, and "What if" scenario was awesome.

hell yes brother! those costumes were half the fun! Plus the plotline was actually like a comic book and everything overall just rocked more

The PS2s and PS3/360 gen Spider-Mans have just ended up being base copied off the movies and lost it's comic book roots that the PS1 titles had. From what I read this Spiderman looks like another stupidly insane combo, pixie dust, arcady hack and slash. With no decent story. But it does look much better than that immense failure, Friend or Foe.

Seriously when are they gonna make Spider-man games innovative? when are you gonna be aloud to actually walk around as Peter Parker and feel the stress of his life trying to keep up with dates and school/work as well as being Spider-man? Imagine this scenario; your walking as Peter then your Spidy Sense tingles and then you see someone in trouble and you have to fid somewhere to change, thats innovative gameplay right there which would allow entrance for deeper story.
And since when has spidy decided to work with enemies and be bad?, unless he's got the black suit.

The Spider-Man game on the PS1 was awesome. They can work well if they have original stories, but trying to beef out a movie plot to fit a game didn't work too well. This one looks like it could be fairly good.

The movie games sucked but I thought the 2 ps1 games were great, especially the first one. I just want a great spider-man based on 616.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows Q&A
Look out -- here come the folks behind Spider-Man.
by Greg Miller
US, April 18, 2008 - For the last few years, it's been good to be a comic book nerd. Batman's returned to theaters, Marvel's Civil War shook the status quo, and the Iron Man movie actually looks good. Still, Shaba Games and Treyarch have sweetened the pot with the announcement of Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.

An action-adventure game pitting Spidey against a global threat, Web of Shadows will let players customize their superpowers, choose sides, and take the battle to the New York skyline thanks to a vertical combat system on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PSP, Wii, DS and PC this fall.

Just 24 hours after breaking the news with IGN and Yahoo!, Activision is back to give you the first details on a project it's keeping very much under wraps. So, grab your web shooters, hang up on Aunt May and let Activision Senior Executive Producer Graham Fuchs and Shaba Games Studio Head Chris Scholz dangle a few tidbits in front of you that are sure to make you want this game even more -- oh, and when you're done here, check out Yahoo!'s Top Five Reasons to Swing Back to NYC.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IGN: Talk about a megaton -- Spider-Man is back! What exactly is happening in New York and ol'webhead's life in this new game? Where do the players fit in?

Graham Fuchs and Chris Scholz: Yes, it's pretty heavy. New York City has been invaded and martial law has been declared. Heroes are gathering uptown to protect civilians, and villains are grouping downtown to repel the aggressors. It's up to the player as Spider-Man to save the city … by any means necessary.

IGN: The first thing that sprung out at us when we looked at the first screenshot was that Spider-Man's got his classic comic book logo on his back rather than the movie logo. Is this story taking place in the comic book canon? Is it after the start of the Brand New Day arc? Are we completely off base and this is its own story all together?

Graham Fuchs and Chris Scholz: You're right; this game is set in the classic comic universe. We've been given a lot of freedom to come up with our own storyline that fits perfectly with the gameplay we've envisioned.

IGN: We realize you're not ready to show your hand just yet, but we all know that one of the best parts of the Spider-Man universe is his rogues gallery. That screenshot of an alien-looking/messed up Empire State Building looks like the work of a serious bad guy. Will Spider-Man's foe in this game be someone he's faced off with before or someone original for the title?

Graham Fuchs and Chris Scholz: There's going to be a lot of Marvel heroes and villains involved in dealing with the invasion. Some are pretty well known, and some are fan favorites who've never appeared in a Spider-Man game before.

IGN: How do the customizable superpowers work? Is it one of those things where the more you use your powers the stronger they get or are there upgrades you earn by collecting coins or something?

Graham Fuchs and Chris Scholz: Through the upgrade system you're going to be able to build the Spider-Man that suits your play style. For example, if you prefer to attack from a distance, you can upgrade more web moves. If you prefer to get up close and personal, you can upgrade your hand to hand combat moves. The player is in control of how Spidey evolves through the game.

Maybe that'll go away on its own ...IGN: The one thing people always comment on when it comes to the majority of Activision's Spider-Man games is how much fun it is to just swing around New York. What is web slinging like in this game? Is it one button? Do you need to use left and right triggers to choose a direction?

Graham Fuchs and Chris Scholz: The swinging everyone loves will be back, and we continue to make improvements to make it better than ever. We've also put a lot of focus into Spidey's wall-crawling and acrobatics to make his movement through the city more fluid than ever.

IGN: In the past, fighting the forces of evil has had the tendency to get repetitive with Spider-Man just punching and kicking on the ground. What can you tell us about the new vertical combat system?

Graham Fuchs and Chris Scholz: The goal was to recreate the feeling of the battles in the comics that start on the ground, go up the side of a building, and finish on the rooftops. Our combat designer has called this "the most 3D game ever."

This game looks fun. This also looks like a sequel to the PSOne Spider Man Games (Which kicked ass)

The PS1 Spidey games were original stories, they weren't based off either...
