Title: Meryl Silverburgh?

Hi all, I'm new here and this is probably a stupid question but just one I can't work out the answer to. Hope you can help me out.
Meryl's official last name is Silverburgh, her father is Matt Campbell (or a slim chance of being Roy Campbell as per the non-canon ending of MGS1).
Was Silverburgh her mother's last name? Is there any evidence that her parents were divorced?
Just trying to work out why she uses the name Silverburgh.
Hopefully you guys can help a noob out, cheers.

I'm pretty sure her dad died. But I thought that Roy was the father, even though it was part of the non canon bit.

Absolutely, Meryl is the Roy's daughter.
Apparently the Colonel had an affair with his sister-in-law.
Based on that info, yes, Meryl's parents were married.
Not much info supporting where the last name came from though.

Whether Roy is her father or not, she is under the impression that Matt Campbell is her father.
You would think that she would take pride in the family name and use Campbell as there is a history of military service in the bloodline. I don't think she had any hatred or disrespect for her aparent father so I dont know why she isn't known as Meryl Campbell.
Hell, I don't even know for sure if Meryl's mother and Matt were even married.

Roy tells you himself that he is actually Meryl's father and had an affair with his deceased brother's wife.
And I'm sure that Roy wouldn't really want her knowing that her Mother had an affair with her "Uncle".

that's a good question, why is she named Silverburgh? Maybe is she using her mother's name because she didn't know her father.

The answer is rather simple.
The "Campbell" dynasty is a big deal in the military. After all Roy Campbell was the Commander-in-Chief of FOXHOUND and I'm pretty sure Matt was in a similar position. Meryl wanted to become a soldier on her own terms, rather than having it handed to her on a plate due to who her family is.
On Roy the Father?
He is Meryl's father, confirmed by the recent previews of MGS 4 that state:

Perhaps that's a reason for her being gone in MGS2? She had family issues to deal with.
