Title: A Site for MGS forums
KingFrost - May 11, 2008 05:16 AM (GMT)
Alright, so I know I haven't posted much here, I did a good amount of reading threads before becoming a member. I was wondering if the admins where planning on ever making an actual website. I know that MGS TUS is a very good fan site, but to be honest, they have been having a lot issues with there forums hence why I decided to join MGSForums and I believe MGSForums has a bigger community.
If admins do not wish to make a website, I will gladly do it for them. I don't even want to run it unless I'm asked to. So I want make it clear that this is in no way trying to get any power. All I request is if the admins agree on me making the website, that I get credit for what I do like on a thank you page or something. I used to run websites, One was on Final Fantasy/Square-Enix site called Final Fantasy Squared, I closed it down to cover all RPGs hence a new website called Ultima Fantasy Online, and I made a two side websites that I never really published online. One I did extensive content on MGS3, which I have lost, but I should be able to find it or rewrite.
So why would I do this? Well, I want to make a website and just have fun again. I loved making websites and putting them together. It was just a hard time running them by myself. I had a few members on staff, but I lost some due to the many changes I made with the site and forums. It's also summer time and I have a lot of time on my hands. So it be nice to work on something like this considering the time I have.
It would also be something good to be on my resume overall, because I know this community isn't going anywhere anytime soon. If the admins do let me make a website, I hope to be able to launch it the week before or the day of MGS4's release.

If these forums change... I'm gone.
BosaBoss - May 11, 2008 07:12 AM (GMT)
It'll change to zetaboards in some time. But I hope everything else stays the same, like the organisations. That's something unique, I've never seen it on other forums.
xAlwaysOpenMouthx - May 11, 2008 07:20 AM (GMT)
Oh hell no. They better not. Zetaboards sucks!!!!!!!
micster - May 11, 2008 07:21 AM (GMT)
There were ideas for a website before, I should know cos we were invited to make a mock page and I did one.
I dont know what happened to that idea

At least that's what I read on a members website. Don't remember who it was.
Degirlsawelshy - May 11, 2008 08:14 AM (GMT)
No invisionfree forum is forced to move to zetaboards :)
Liquidus_Snake - May 11, 2008 11:11 AM (GMT)
I just like the idea of a forum alone..
Null - May 11, 2008 12:51 PM (GMT)
It could be a good idea, getting more exposure for the site.
I'd like to hear what Cobb thinks?
ADJ - May 11, 2008 01:23 PM (GMT)
It's actually been in the works for a while, lads. When it'll be done I've no idea, but presumably some time after the zetaboards change.

I've had plans for a site for a couple years now, but I didn't want to do it half-assed. I wanted full integration with the forum, both in terms of administrative control and in terms of membership. Unfortunately, it's at least $100 to get a conversion from IF to IPB, and the amount of bandwidth this forum requires would most likely have put us in a situation similar to that of TUS. If we were to add on a site, the bandwidth required would only increase.
ZB has a website feature built in which, while certainly not as robust as a CMS-driven website, would eliminate any problems involving bandwidth and would also be free.
I feel like I'm rambling, so maybe the better option would be to talk web design on MSN or AIM sometime and go from there. We can figure out the limitations later, but it'd be damn cool to have a site.

I've actually been working on an animal rank guide for MGO2 --which im planning to release to gamefaqs. Its quite well done so far and well researched (although I do need to actually play the full game for the complete set of ranks that will be in the full game) so I would love to contribute that to the site if we made one.
I really like the idea, it would sooo uber secksy.
the_cobbinator - May 11, 2008 05:26 PM (GMT)
Nice! Yeah, and Snake Liquid wrote a bang-up bio on Solid Snake which I have somewhere on my hard-drive. I think Jake's also done some work in that area.

Then maybe we should organise to collect the money. I bet a lot of people here could easily spare a few dollars to help out the forums. If everyone here drinks two beers less, then it shouldn't be a problem ;)

BosaBoss, never ask a man to cut down on his drinking to spare his money.
It just can't be done.

I can provide hosting for the website. I wouldn't put a lot of media on it right away, because I wouldn't know how well the site would do at the beginning. I already have layout being made. It's like half way there. There will be flash involved. I can also host the forums if the admins want me to. It's up to them.

First rule: no Flash.
It's not accessible, not optimized for search engines, and it requires more than just a browser. I realize that you can do all sorts of cool shit using Flex and whatnot, and that having a controlled, non-browser dependent environment makes things like testing for IE6 less cumbersome, but nothing sucks more than a 'please download this plugin to view this website' message.
KingFrost - May 11, 2008 09:38 PM (GMT)
I added you on MSN to talk to you Cobb so I could show you my first stab at the design. My msn is drengmrt@msn.com I was only going to use flash for one thing and I can do it through a gif if I have to.

What would be the difference between a site and what we have know?
Null - May 11, 2008 10:14 PM (GMT)
^
It's called a front end.

They have different names for a reason, a site holds information, like if we made an mgsf site we could have strategy guides and stuff like that, and the forum is well for just chatting and stuff.
KingFrost - May 12, 2008 12:25 AM (GMT)
Site would contain information/content on all Metal Gear Games, User submitted content like fan fiction, artwork, crafts, etc., two columns for the website, one would be a Question and Answer Column where readers would write letter to the columnist where he would then reply back. (It might be a simple discussion or an actual questions. It doesn't have to pertain to Metal Gear, but it more likely will).
Another column idea could be a week up wrap of the events that happened that week in gaming, so this would be non Metal Gear news. Like lets say Nintendo decided to redesign the DS again, the columnist would put that in there. I think the columnist should select five stories of the week, and then a few small ones. Links would be provided for each for more information.
If you have any ideas for columns, please share them here.
I would also like to get the creator of The Last Days of Foxhound to come on maybe the podcast if Tamashi and GreyFox would be okay with that. I hoping to get friendly with the creator. If you have never read this web comic you should, google it. I would post links to his new comic every time one is up.
With that in mind, I'm thinking MGSF could have its own web comic/strip. Also, I would push for the podcasts to be shown on the website as I think it's a very well done podcast. It's informative, entertaining and funny. Tamashi and GreyFox have done a great job.
Contest for the Road to Metal Gear Solid 4 would be on the website. We could announce the winners on the site and forums. Post the graphic entries as well on the site. Metal Gear media would be added, but in small amounts, until the site has become popular enough with the forum users. I'm talking music, wallpapers, screenshots, and videos.
I'm hoping if the admins okay this, that the site hopefully would be up a week before or on the day of MGS4's release date.
Give me feedback and ideas.
Edit- Once the content for the site is done, the staff could write reviews for any game they please under a reviews section.

There won't be any difference, there will be the forum and a website. I'd say it would have info on MGS, key figures of the forum, news, etc.
Just something extra to make things cooler. Not replacing MGSF.

Thanks for the support. I have a good idea for the layout and a lot of it is done. I just need remake the banner and then get feedback on what's good/bad about it. I think I'll only show the admins the layout, because if it happens, I would like it to be a surprise.
MANIC - May 12, 2008 10:48 AM (GMT)
I'd love to see a content side of the site, but preferably still keeping the forum the priority of the website. So perhaps someone could make links at the top fo the page to each Metal Gear game leading to content pages.
I'm looking forward to where this idea is going!
