I just watched Django Unchained for the first time. What a great movie. I feel that Inglorious Basterds was much more intense and suspenseful, but this one just had a "holy shit, that was awesome" feel throughout. Plus Christoph Waltz rules.
It is a great movie, I'm waiting for the Blu Ray release in Australia! It wasn't my favorite Tarantino movie but I still really enjoyed it.

My least favorite of his movies is either Jackie Brown or Death Proof (but I still love both)

Was viewing Ikiru(1952) last night.
Directed by the famed Japanese Director, Akira Kurosawa.

The Performance by Takashi Shimura is Legendary.
Unlike many Japanese actors at the time, especially the ones in a Kurosawa film, his is always more reserved and powerful.
Akira seems to have been influenced by the exaggerated performance's of older silent films.
Thus, many actors in his films overact. Not Takashi, he's always quiet, and you can always tell what he's feeling by reading his face.

As for the film itself, I was surprised how emotionally powerful and engaging it was.
Despite the run time, I found myself drawn to the material.
It's a story all humans relate to, despite it being a foreign film.

Good Cinematography, and even better script.
Powerful acting, good premise, equal Adequate Entertainment.

Overall a Depressing film.
But it left me feeling Good in the end.
So much so I pondered on what I was able to do for others.
That's an accomplishment on the films part. Not many, if any have done so.
Just something about the main character, Watanabe.
How in his final days, didn't try to get others to remember him as some would do. Or party till it was over.
Instead he tried to something Good for others in his last days.
Once dead, he was defamed of any credit.
But it taught a lesson to most of his fellow Bureaucrats.
The Haunting Images of him riding the Swing at night in the snow helps solidify this as a true masterpiece.
The Impact of Images mean a great deal to me.
And that alone is deserving of being framed.

Great Film.
That made me think, and want to be a better person.

I'm fairly curious about the films of Akira Kurosawa.
I've already seen Seven Samurai.
And now Ikiru.
I hope to see Drunken Angel and Rashomon in the future.
They look pretty good.

I just finished watching First Blood. I really enjoyed it but I found the ending a little anti climatic. There was a huge build up but it just sort of... Ended. I get the whole emotional breakdown thing with Rambo at the end but I found it hard to understand what he was saying. Anyway I heard that Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III werent that great. I might pass on those.

I watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret Of The Ooze last night. I bought the 4-pack with the tree 90s movies and the 2007 CGI movie, might watch that one today.

@Bulup: Rambo 2 is ok, 3 is pretty bad. They're pretty much run-of-the-mill action movies though, nothing at all like First Blood 1. It is pretty cool seeing Stallone blow all kinds of shit up though.

Today I watched the first 2 episodes of Bates Motel. I was a huge fan of the Hitchcock movie "Psycho" so I checked this show out. I was a bit skeptical about it being a reboot rather than a prequel but so far it's quite interesting.i like how Norman and his mother still live in the house from the original movie and the actor they got to play Norman looks the part. It may be too early for me to judge but so far I quite like it.

Well, that sums up pretty much all of 80s action movies.

Doesn't make them any less AWESOME.

I recently purchased and watched The Straight Story(1999)
Directed by David Lynch, and starring Richard Farnsworth and Sissy Spacek.
It also has Harry Dean Stanton in a small role(You know, from Alien and The Avengers)
Also based on a true Story.

I'd call it the most Emotional Film Lynch ever made, but can't really say for sure, since this is the only one of his I've ever truly seen.
I've seen about 15 minutes of the Elephant man.
And I know enough about Lynch to know he's an artist often affiliated with surrealism.

True story, I was at Barnes and noble when I purchased it.
Asked the clerk if they had it.
It was found and categorized in the "Girls Night In" section.
Which I found humorous.

On to the Movie.
Since I was born in Iowa, I found it difficult to dislike the visuals.
In fact, the cinematography is among the best I've ever seen.
Performances go from Great to Moving.
It is seriously up there with some of my Favorites(The Shawshank Redemption, 2001 A Space Odyssey etc.)

I'd recommend it. But it's not for everyone.
It is intentionally slow.
As the premise is about a 73 year old man driving his lawn mower over 200 miles to see his sick brother.
It honestly sounds really boring from that description.
But somehow it works, and kept my attention.
Growing up in similar and close areas as the film, I can say the few quirks and jabs at society in the area was accurate, if a little blunt(Deer specifically)
I Usually don't like the a solo violin to sound as if it's more country then it needs to be. But the soundtrack was extremely moving.

Anyway, that's what I was watching.

The Hammer horror movies have been released on Blu Ray in Aus, today I bought and watched Dracula: Prince Of Darkness (with Christopher Lee as Dracula), It's a sequel to Horror Of Dracula, it was quite a good movie but the ending was a little silly. I heard that the sequels go downhill from there so I think I'll pass on those.

I was watching Godzilla vs Biollante(1989) last night.
Its one of my favorites, and is best watched on a Summer Night.

Directed by Kazuki Omori. Who also scripted it.
But it was originally Shinichiro Kobayashi's Story. (though Heavily Altered in the finished product)
He'd won a writing contest for the film by Toho. Ironic, as he was a dentist. (You can never really tell)
Anyway, I wanted to point out the acting in the film. It goes from really subtle, to some of the cheesiest acting. Perfectly representing the 80's.
Despite that, while watching, I couldn't help but acknowledge how good the story and characters were. They were intertwined so well.
Some Good Ideas sparked from here as well. You may remember The G Cells playing a big part of the story in Godzilla 2000(1999). Well that first sparked in this film. Done much more effectively.
The Only Gripe with the story I have, is The ESP part of the film. It adds little, and I just don't care for it.

The Music was criticized by Regular Composer Akira Ifukube, who would then return and score the next Godzilla film, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah(1991)
The Films score is by Koichi Sugiyama. And while I'm a bit alone on this, I think it features one of the most unique and beautiful soundtracks in Godzilla History. I may sound crazy, But I also like Godzilla vs Hedorah's(1971) Soundtrack by Riichiro Manabe. Despite his reputation, his score amplifies the effect of the films he worked on. Which were often much weirder Godzilla films then usual.
Sure, Ifukube is the most recognized Godzilla Composer. And Kow Otani does a marvelous job.
But for the most part, when someone else took on the role of composing a Godzilla film, it was a pretty good score most of the time.

The Special Effects were also a highlight. Especially the rain in this film. Very pretty indeed.
The Update to the Godzilla Costume is one of the best in the series.
Up there with the 1963 Godzilla suit from "King Kong Vs Godzilla"(1963)

Overall, a flawed, but incredible Godzilla entry.

I'm currently watching Lost.
Got to episode 9. (Stand outs are Episodes 2,4,6,7)
Really wish I'd watched it sooner.
But I have to start sometime. And it's fantastic.

Also, as long as we're watching something, I'm watching Pacific Rim Trailers.
