A bit late but I saw Focus two Sundays ago. It was alright, there were some well done scenes and stuff but it felt pretty generic, I can't really put my finger on it but there was somehting slightly off about it to me. I also watched the pilots for two anime series Code Geass and Akame Ga Kill, they were pretty good I guess but I'm not sure if I'm gonna watch heaps far in either. I've always found anime kinda hard to get into, I can easily get into manga though, not sure why that is :/ |

I watched the Shining with a load of drunk people last Friday. Now I'm sure that the film is an allegory of American history. There's still a lot to be figured out from this film, and Kubrickfans are going about it in completely the wrong way. Watching the film backwards and forwards at the same time, Kubrick faking the moon landing and some other nazi-alien business that's not worth going into. The room 237 often starts off well but goes into batshit crazy territory within five minutes. If they at least stayed with the stuff about the native Indians they could have actually gotten somewhere. Anyway I'm gonna list some of the evidence I've found regarding the American history allegory. 1: The native Indians. The hotel is full of native Indian art according to some bloke in the Room237 film. There are cans of food with a red Indian on the front. The Hotel is built on an Indian burial ground, much like America. This might explain the river of blood when the elevator opens. 2: Something about gold: I'm too lazy and uneducated to talk about this one so here's a link. https://youtu.be/IoWZEwedPkc?list=PLywecxpcTSV52UMOO6tDQY2RZDjUPK4iC 3: Moon Landing: There's a short moment in the film that's quite clearly about the moon landings. With the kid in the Apollo jumper getting up and walking toward room 237 as if he's been invited. The moon is on average 238,855 miles from the earth, but it fluctuates, so it this parallel could still work. 4: Alcohol prohibition. Like the gold stuff, this happened in the 1920's.. And Jack himself is prohibited from drinking alcohol due to his abusive behavior. There's definitely a lot going on in this film about the 1920's. The gold room. The date on that sign at the end of the film. The music and even the clothes. A drunk friend of mine went crazy over the 1920's clothes they all had during the party scene. He has weird obsession with that kind of thing, particularly Victorian clothes. There's a probably a lot more in there I'm missing. But from the stuff we already have, you can start to build a decent analysis about the Shining that doesn't go into stupid territory. What's the deal with the whole Delbert Grady affair? Is his racism and the subsequent death of Dick supposed to be symbolic of some other event in American history. There's also a tonne of stuff about "keeping America clean" and "White mans burden". I don't have the intellectual apparatus to figure all this out myself. Edited by Frank Underwood, Mar 26 2015, 08:22:34 PM.

Antoine Fuqua's The Replacement Killers. Admittedly it's basically just Woo-lite, and Chow Yun-Fat's English wasn't brilliant at this stage, but holy moly does it get unfairly slagged off by just about everyone. |

Great movie. Think I'll give it a watch again as well. Or Raid 1. Like that one a bit better since it's nonstop action. |

Mission Impossible 1 and 2 because I'm excited for the new one. The first movie is still good, the second is really dumb, so dumb that I love it anyway

Raid 2's kitchen fight > Raid 1's Mad Dog fight, though. But Raid 2's Mad Dog bar fight > most things in general. |
