Remember... ACTING. Not "Cool" or "Badass" competition, but actual acting talent at it's best.

My contribution would be Hostage starring Bruce Willis.

IMO Bruce Willis's best performance since 12 Monkeys. And Ben Foster and Jonathan Tucker also should get a mention for their amazing performances as well.

It's Soccer not Football :P

The most obvious one, The Joker.
Even though he gets enough praise, it really was a great performance by Heath Ledger.
His expression delivery of lines, makes it memorable to me.

Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men. Yeah the characeter can be classed as 'badass' but Javier just nails that role. He is walking evil personified, speaks very little, and when he does it's chilling, everything he does is calculated and you can see it in Javier.

Hell yes. I saw Hostage for the first time a few days ago and I was mesmerized by it. Kim Coates should also get a mention just for his voice as the Watchman, he just oozes menace. Bruce is on top form and Ben Foster is just plain disturbing.

I'd like to nominate Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort in the last two Harry Potter movies.

For me it has to be Sylvester Stallone in Rambo: First Blood.

You're lying, I've been you

As always, it is hard to just pick one. For a lot of people it is hard to look past your PERSONAL favorites and look at who really deserves the title of great performances. Looking at personal ones I would pick some honorable mentions such as Jim Carry for Eternal Sunshine, Penelope Cruz for Vanilla Sky, Natalie Portman for Closer, and Jean Reno for The Professional. Also on the topic of Bruce Willis, while I liked him a lot in Hostage, I liked him a lot more in 16 Blocks. I mean...damn, he really immersed himself into that role. Also I really liked his narrating in Sin City"Little girl lives, old man dies. Fair trade."

Sean Penn ~ I Am Sam . I am sure I do not have to explain this one. He simply does an AMAZING job. Many do not like him because of his personal life, but between this and his acting abilities in Mystic River.

Tom Hanks ~ Forrest Gump ~ Cast Away ~ The Green Mile Seriously, how can anybody not respect his acting especially in these films. When somebody can carry an entire movie by himself ie Cast Away or being the only person to talk in 90% of Forrest Gump, you know he is good. I mean damn, he made me cry over a volley ball for fucks sake.
Also re-watched The Green Mile about a week ago. Damn he carries that movie near the end during the execution scene. He dragged that scene out for every tear and deserved it rightfully. Also have to give props to Micheal Clark Duncan for that role as well.

Hugh Jackmen ~ The Fountain I always liked him, but his role in The Fountain is unforgettable.
Spoiler: click to toggle

M]Hilary Swank ~ Million Dollar Baby Damn, I felt so bad for this character throughout the entire movie. Such an amazing performance. She deserved every Oscar. I really can't say enough about her here. I know many people like this and she PERFECT.

I think Magnolia and Short Cuts both had some serious good acting in it. I couldn't begin with the casts, because both movies have a cast list that is too long to type out here and sum up just a couple outstanding characters. But anyone who likes good movies without explosions and BS should look into these two. People are more likely to have seen Magnolia, but if you saw Magnolia and liked it then check out Short Cuts (which came out 5 years earlier) and you won't be disappointed. It was directed by Robert Altman (Popeye, Nashville, M.A.S.H.) and is based on several different short stories by Raymond Carver.

Some of the cast includes Lyle Lovett, Jack Lemmon, Julianne Moore, Mathew Modine, Huey Lewis, Alex Trebek, Lilly Tomlin, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Ann Archer, Madeleine Stowe, Tim Robbins, Peter Gallagher.

Good stuff but it's only available on Criterion Collection in a deluxe set.

The Green Mile, with Tom Hanks.

That movie made me cry like a baby, i'm serious, I think one time, the movie was being played in class, I held myself from crying, it was that touching.

Anthony Quinn in "Lion of the Desert".

Someone also mentioned Clint Eastwood in UNFORGIVEN.

That's all i can think of for now.

Malcolm McDowell as Alex in A Clockwork Orange.

Jack Nicholson in just about anything, but most notably in The Shining and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho.

Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man.

Pretty much everybody in Mystic River.

Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden in Fight Club.

I'll think of more sometime, I'm sure.
