TGS 2005: Metal Gear Acid Peripheral
Konami unveils the Solid Eye. First details inside.
by Anoop Gantayat
September 15, 2005 - At last, the big Metal Gear Acid 2 surprise promised by Konami has been revealed. Just prior to the start of the Tokyo Game Show, the latest issue of Famitsu features a first look at the "Solid Eye," a new Metal Gear Acid related peripheral that attaches to your PSP.

The Solid Eye wraps around the PSP and extends out a few inches, making it look like you have a thick pair of binoculars in your hands. You look through a pair of circular openings on the face of the device. Doing so apparently makes the screen leap out at the player. We presume this means that the device makes the game world look 3Dish, although it's obviously hard to describe what this is like when just looking at the decidedly 2D screenshots from Famitsu.
Metal Gear Acid 2 will be playable at the Tokyo Game Show with the Solid Eye attached, so we should be able to give more specific details once the show begins tomorrow. Konami plans to include the Solid Eye as a bonus with the game, so even if the effect turns out to be a novelty, there's no harm done.

Also revealed in the magazine are a few added details on Metal Gear Acid 2 -- the game itself. Surprisingly, the story and setting for Metal Gear Acid 2 are completely different from the game's predecessor. With a new story comes a new heroine, and the hot girl joining Snake this time round is a cute blond girl called Venus. You'll be able to switch off between the two characters.

Konami has worked a number of other changes into the game, as revealed by director Shinta Nojiri (also the director of Metal Gear: Ghost Babel for the Game Boy Advance). In addition to new cards during the main mode of play, you'll find an all new battle mode, featuring wireless play. Players select two characters as their in-game counterparts for this mode. The game now has a more direct feel of movement for your characters, although overall movement is still determined by cards. We'll have to try the TGS version for ourselves to see how far this full control system goes.

Metal Gear Acid 2 is set for Japanese PSP release on 12/8, so we expect the version on display at the Tokyo Game Show to be far along in development. We'll have lots more from TGS once the show kicks off tomorrow.
