Right, one of you computer boffins will know because I'm completely lost. I've downloaded about 8 youtube videos in mp4 format onto my new player (Sony NZW A818 8gb), but only around half of them play properly - the rest are "unsupported formats". Any ideas? Thanks folks.

A few things to think about:

- What software/browser plug-in did you use to obtain them?
- Are they all of the right extension?
- Do you have the latest codecs installed on your player?
- Were they all done very recently?

Err, thanks for your input mal.

KI, they were all done at the same time, using the latest version of FF, and downloaded using the same method:

I'm guessing it could be something to do with resolution of the mp4 file?

I didn't look at that video, jc55, but the way I obtain YT files currently is through a FF addon called DownloadHelper. It adds a button in your browser and let's you click it whenever there's a flash object on-screen and you can save it really easily this way.

However the files it outputs are .flv which means to play them as mp4's or whatever you'd have to convert them again - there's a great website for this out there which is totally free to use and it's linked below.

No offence but vixy.net is crap. Slow with 50/50 results after a very long wait..

http://online.movavi.com/
do up to 5 videos at once, not exceding 10 mins each, or 100 mb total (combined). Also lets you join as many as 5 files at a time to create a single big file. Choose your output format, input your email and wait.. Within 5 mins to 24 hours a URL will be sent to you with your converted videos. You can also convert files from your harddrive by toggling the URL / UPLOAD button, but the same restrictions apply (10 mins max each, and total of 100mb). If file cannot be converted, try again sometimes second time works for some reason.

http://www.videocodezone.com/
click "watch/download youtube videos" and then do your search. Toggle from Meta Cafe etc. This site will work on your PDA or internal PSP browser. Files longer than 10 mins don't seem to work. Success rate in general is very high though.

http://converttube.com/
This one is slower but if there is a YouTube video you must have on your PDA and the other 2 converters don't work, try this one out. You have to wait 15 mins in between conversions so make coffee. Comes in handy when the other 2 sites don't want to convert your file. But I only ever use it as a fallback when the other one will not convert my video.

I would use those sites in that order, 1,2,3.. if a video won't convert using one, try to convert it using the next utility. The odd video will cause problems on all 3. Maybe try and find a different upload of the same video.. Look for an identical video that's a second short or a second longer.

what was the url to the FLV converter you posted? i was gonna try it out but i was on my psp the last time i logged in here and couldn't test the results. im still searching for as many reliable backup plans as possible. the odd video will not convert with the server sided sites i prefer using.

for psp, sometimes i have to save as AVI, then convert to MP4 using PSP MAX Converter (retail) to prevent corrupt file or incomplete conversion session on a server sided tool

i wish mp4 was universal. damn mpeg3/4

I use http://mediaconverter.org/index.php

It is excellent. Only problem is that it gives you no more than 10 free conversions per day.

If you've got problems with mp4, on the third screen you get to before you start the conversion process, make sure your resolution settings are appropriate. I solved all of my problems once I realised the resolution needed to be set to 320x240 for each video.
