I also have this problem...
Problem: I cannot create games. but i can still play them.
What happens: As i am logging in online, the connection status at the bottom of the screen sais, "connecting....checking dnas....checking udp port..." just after it checks the udp port i get an error that sais, "cannot create games on this server, error 519:179", then it logs on and im cqcing peeps in no time. but i still cant host a game.
My Connection: I am using a linksys router to go online with, also there is another ps2 using that same router getting that same error. My network setting is on auto and not manual(all that ip stuff). before i go online there is an option in the game where i can set the udp port and a couple of other options too. the default udp port in the menu is 5730.
What i think(i'ma dumbass): im sure it has something to do with changing that in game udp setting(5730), also i think it has something to do with my router and port fowording or opening ports(im new to this). and maybe it has something to do with changing my network setting on the ps2(all that ip stuff).
ps: i CAN host games on other titles such as socom3 and sniper elite...but metal gear for some reason is special. also, i find that if you sing to your ps2 while it is connecting online, it connects a whole lot faster  .
CAN SUM1 PLEASE HELP ME, TELL ME WHAT I COULD DO TO TRY AND FIX THE PROBLEM.
THANK YOU. till then, laugh...and grow fat.

I Can Create games now. :lala:
My Situation: I'm going online via a linksys router. And I couldn't host games.
My Solution:
First, (Im using WindowsXP) go to the "command prompt" not "run" and type in "IPCONFIG/ALL". Copy down all those numbers u see; ipaddress, subnetmask, default gatway, dhcp server, dns server, a bunch of numbers that look like this, "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx".
Second, open your router settings/configuration, go to the port opening page and open the following:
1) port: 50000-65535, tcp/udp: both, ip address: type in your ip that u coppied down "192.168.1.xxx(i think it sould look like this), check "enable"
2) port: 5730-5730, tcp/udp: both, ip address: same as above. enable.
Third, Start Metal gear solid and before u connect find the option where is sais something like "use detailed settings". Now create a new setting: For me it was "Setting 2". When u reach the IP part of it, use the manual configuration. follow the steps and type in all the info u coppied down from your pc. follow the steps and u are done.
Fourth, Back in the online menu in the game, find the detailed settings again and, configure the following: auto router settings: off, udp port: 50000.
Fifth, connect to the internet and you'll be hosting games and getting cqc'd in no time...BY ME!!. :thumb: make sure u connect with the new setting u created.
These steps worked for me. I hope the work for u 2... that band sucks. I don't think you need to open the 5730 port, but I did it anyway.
In conclusion, I'd like say that just because people are different doesnt make them stupid. The la li lu le what! :fox:

If it does that it means you have to input your IP Address and other settings manually...Usually if you are using a wireless router or something...

Ill explain this for you lol, a router is not only for seting up wireless networks its also a firewall what he had to do was open some ports. Ports are a computers acsess to the internet and visa versa opening ports make a computer less safe online by alowing anyone or anthing acsess to your PC through any port that is open. He needed to know the ip of the PC connected directly to the PS2 so the router could open the nessery ports for that computer only not anyother on the network.

Some games and programs need open ports to operate, you simply couldent host because the signal couldent pentrate your router as its defalt acsess port was closed.

This help lol, if you would have stated you were usinf a router i would have said this before.

That screwed up my stuff more.... Like 40% It cant even detect the UDP port, meaning that I cant connect to the server.... Meaning I cant play...

But I guess I shoulda read this first http://mgsforums.com/index.php?showtopic=9399
