Wow. You're certainly an extremely talented artist! You want a job working for Marvel or DC? You should get it. Just produce some more of this fabulous work, and you'll get that job.

thats exactly the thing. I DONT want to do the work for hire stuff, i love the indie stuff, and some day i want to self publish. I'd rather be a Frank Miller(someone who creates their own characters and owns them) than a John Romita Jr (an artist who has worked at marvel for 30 years, but owns none of the characters hes made). but sometimes the work for hire stuff is a necessary evil because it provides a steady paycheck. |

The important thing about having your own comics is making sure its got soul. The drawing comes second. But it looks like your on the right path. Sharpie pen can be alot of fun. The only crit I have for you is watch out for your thick vs thin lines around the outline of your character. Most notable would be Wolverine in the Wolverine and Deadpool fighting ninjas picture. You have made the outline on Wolverine's legs pretty thick, compared to the rest of his body. I would say either trim it down or apply the same amount to the rest of his outline. Or a little of both. That and keep an eye out on proportions. Generally proportions are what makes most drawings awkward, so by getting your proportions right in the beginning lay in will prevent troubles later in the drawing. Such things to look out for would be hands and legs. Don't make the hands too big and compare the everything to one part of the body, for instance is the hand supposed to be bigger than the head? is the forarm as tall as the head is at this angle? etc. Its generally for most poses its good to try to use the head as a tool to help keep things in proportion. And lastly, anatomy. But don't worry too much about that. Study it on and off a few times a week and you will do fine. Just memorize the major muscles and how they function. But everyone suffers anatomy, so by nailing it early on, you will be that much better than other people your age. |

are you familiar with Dark Knight Returns? and, more importantly, DK2? that pretty much sums up my career in comics to this point. when i came in, i was all about being anatomically correct. I was a John Buscema clone. I worried about what things looked like to the nth degree. then something happened. I realized that in the end, that doesnt really matter. I was trying so hard to make the next Dark Knight, or the next MGS, that i was basically trying too hard. I got lost up in the technicalities of what i was doing that i forgot to have fun. so thats basically what im doing now. Im trying to, instead of getting MORE realistic, instead go the opposite direction. I want to be so fucking abstract that people either hate it or like it. id rather have polarizing opinions on my art than have people go "eh its ok" thanks for the comments though! i dont mean to sound defensive or come off that way, because im not. Im glad you took the time to scrutinize my drawings. However i disagree with you about the lineweight issue. lineweight is EVERYTHING. just ask Klaus Janson EDIT:ill try to show you what i mean. I met Frank Miller at the NYCComiCon last year. awesome guy, nicest ive ever met. we talked for about an hour about how much marvel and dc suck lol. anyways, he gave me his email, we talked a bit, and then i asked him if he could give me something to ink, cuz ive never seen his bare pencils. He sent me an old sketch from when he was doing dark knight 1. I inked it and got this ![]() however, i worked on my inking, and came back 7 months later to try and re do it. so far, i have this ![]() theres a huge improvement on the quality of line, the different lineweights used, and the steadiness of the stroke. and i havent even completed inking it! When you keep lines flat and dead, they dont move, dont bend, dont fly. they dont make the drawing ALIVE. and im trying to get that feeling of aliveness in my stuff. |

I see what your getting at. Its just the way that I have been taught. I was taught to first master realism, then I could deviate from it. That way I could show to the educated viewer that I knew the anatomy I was drawing, but chose to represent it more abstractly or surreal. But everyone eventually gets to point B a little differently than everyone else... (something I learned from a certain someone here I think you know, heh.) And I like where your going with your inks. Lost of heavy contrasting blacks and whites on some of them. And I love my contrast. Its great to use alot of black because it makes the viewer participate in coming up with their own details. But keep at it. Theres another forums that I like to surf around in at www.conceptart.org/forums. Theres alot of cool stuff there where you can pick up some helpful tips and ideas. Maybe even try inking some of the pencil works that float around over there.
