Death to the Patriots!
To this day the end sequence when snake salutes the "The Boss" at her grave has got to be the most memorable endings in a video game i have ever seen. It's so perfect and fitting. When the tear runs down his eye it just tops the whole game off. Had that been the last game in the series it would have made a awesome ending to the entire series. It also shows us that big boss wasn't really a bad guy to begin with, he was loyal and carried out his duties.

It kinda surprises me that after everything Big Boss went through he ended up turning evil and creating three sons that have affected the mgs universe...

Well Big Boss was never really "evil", MGS3 showed he had different views because of what happened to him in Snake Eater, then MPO devolped on it. MGS3 was like a mirror tale of the original MG and MG2, Big Boss killed The Boss because they were on oppsing sides and had different views (although it was revealed after the mission her true intentions), and Snake killed Big Boss for the same reasons.

Not a lot of people are truly evil in MGS series, the ones who are most evil are the sadistic ones who do things for they're own benefit. Volgin, Gene, and Ocelot would fit in these catagories. Big Boss was more "sub-evil" he threatened people with disaster and war because of Outer Heaven, but he was thinking on the benefits of soilders and just trying to give them a place where they are needed.
"The meaning of justice can change from one day to the next. A professional solider never brings “justice” into the mission. The ones who need a reason to fight are the ones who fight for a living. That’s what my mentor told me. Politics are fickle, they change with the times. So long as we remain loyal to our countries, solders like us need nothing to believe in. She died out of loyalty, not to justice, not to her country. To herself, to the mission." -Big Boss: Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops

I won't lie...every time I watch that scene I cry a little. It's sad to think of what the boss did for her country knowing what would happen and then to see Big Boss's reaction to it all. Eva's narration makes it perfect. I love the song by Starsailor "Way to Fall" at the credits too.

I am glad we got to know Big Boss, he has become my favorite character of the game. I hope that MGS4 sheds further light into the man that is Big Boss.

Finish MG 2. Metal Gear doesn't tell the story half as well as MG 2 does. Plus you will get the original-and far far far superior-backstory of Gray Fox and you will get to see Big Boss burnt to a crisp.

I disagree that it would have been a perfect end to the series, it was the perfect end to Naked Snake. But [so far] this series isn't about the foolishly idealistic Naked Snake, it's about the ongoing tale of Solid Snake and the Curse of Big Boss' Genes. It speaks volumes of why Naked Snake became Big Boss, but little else.

Okay....I really have to add my little input here!

Only when a francise is VERY LUCKY, can it conjure up a lasting image or an iconic image, that will endure and basically say virtually everything about the story in one picture.

When I say ICONIC IMAGE....think about that for a second........

Things like Trinity jumping up in the matrix, which also was the first special effect in the movie that made people sit up and take notice. What more iconic image for the matrix is that one?! And it sums up the film and has gone down in movie legend!

Now, I knew early on that the image of Big boss saluting at the grave of the boss was Just one of those timeless moments. It has EVERYTHING! Love,Loss,Patriotism,Wasted oppertunitys,Angst,Remorse,The forth wall being blow apart by the feeling of being used that the player has.......- The list could go on!

Metal gear had NO iconic and enduring image until that moment.

Let me tell you a brief story about what happened to some guy on Youtube after MGS4 came out, and it caused quite a stir!

(I am keeping this in topic but have to shift about to make my point - Please forgive me).

After mgs4 came out, a person on Youtube uploaded all the cgi, much to the delight of everyone and much to the lament of Konami/Youtube/The patriots etc lol.

He uploaded the lot and everyone thanked him, and the term they used for him (Which EVERYONE seemed to simultainiously use as the highest compliment for a MGS fan) was 'You are a true patriot' Or 'You merit the title of Big boss'.

Well two days afterwards, apparently Youtube cancelled his two year account, and he made a new account with the same name spelled differently or something, to tell everyone what happened.

(Now to the point I'm making)

He put up a video saying goodbye and stuff and the video was simply, The same picture at the end of MSG3 Big boss saluting the boss' grave and 'Heres to you' playing in the background.

Theres no more touching scene in any MGS then that one in MGS3.

Now, this sums up what I mean about Iconic images, and the contexts they bring with them.

When I look at that picture, I see honour,Patriotism, and the undying desire to never be broken....no-matter what you are faced with. Its a strange mix of Japanese honour and raw American Patriotism..

The boss and Big boss was an amazing journey to go on....and it instantly became my favourite MG story.

Ok..that turned into a bit of a rant....But I had to illistrate the point I was trying to make.

Well, if its still up and if I can find it, I'll post the link - Its MGS3 at its best (Icon wise)

What do you think?

Excuse me for asking, but, did you even understand what happened in the game? Or do you just not like the character?

Don't even think about using auto-fire, or I'll know.

It was the best scene I've ever seen in a videogame, indeed. I was never moved to shed a tear during a videogame, but the ending of MGS3 has been the only one that made me do that.

Yes, this was probably one of the best scenes in video game history. Like others said, it does choke me up a little bit when I see it. Amazing.
