How am I not surprised that you decided to answer me in a condescending manner and ended a hypothetical question with a period? Will have to look him up, though, in any case... good music shouldn't be unheard just because the messenger's a bit... unruly. Good Bad Religion songs? God, I'm so musically dumb. :| |

Tom Waits had a massive (and I mean MASSIVE) impact on the antifolk movement, I'd say he's pretty classifiable as punk. misa, Recipe For Hate, Generator and No Control are - what I consider to be - Bad Religion's best works, check out any songs from them. Most of the pre Brooks Wackerman (2000?) material is good stuff though. |

I'd say Suffer is probably their most respected/liked album. I'd also reccomend Against the Grain and Stranger Than Fiction, I'm loving '21st Century Digital Boy' all over again, wonder if I can get ma band to cover it. My friend is getting hell into 'Refused', anybody heard about them? |

Yeah, I'm really liking Refused. I don't think they're afraid to try new things sonically, as a lot of the hardcore bands I've seen live in my locale and searching on the web for new music seem to be. I fucking love the guitar tone.

I haven't heard much Refused, but what I have heard isn't that great. I've been listening to a lot of Andrew Jackson Jihad lately. |

Does anybody else think Kyuss' album Wretch has very strong punk influences, though it's considered "heavy metal" or "stoner rock"? That album isn't usually rated very highly, which I don't get. I love it. |

I haven't heard it, but it does seem to me that 'stoner rock' can stray all over the genre desert- for example, 'Sick Sick Sick' by Queens of the Stone Age arguably has a Sonic Youth punk-esque sound, and songs like 'If Only' bring to mind The Stooges or Strangler. |

I hear a lot of punk influences in Kyuss, Garcia and Homme both have punk backgrounds so it would make sense. Wretch was Kyuss' first record with Nick Oliveri, up until then his only experience was in punk music, after that he joined The Dwarves, obviously, another punk band. |

I wholly concur. If Only actually somewhat "borrows" the riff from I Wanna Be Your Dog, doesn't it.
Once again, I agree. I never even thought about Oliveri being on that, thanks for pointing that out. I'm digging Fu Manchu a lot right now — got 'em spinning at the moment. I think they're quite punk, personally. "King of the road says you move too slow!" Edited by [X] Entity, Oct 5 2008, 03:27 AM.

What was that band/song you reccomended to me last night? I forgot it before I managed to download it. Still heavily into Jawbreaker and Bad Religion at the moment, I've been listening to 'Crimpshrine' too who apparently were a major influence on Green Day- I can definitely hear it. |

the first time i heard that album i bought it because a few of my friends said they loved it and said i should check it out. I got it home expecting something amazing but was dissapointed so i put it down and didnt pick it back up untill about a year later, and i thought to myself "this is fucking incredible, why didnt i see this before ?!" it really grew on me and is now one of the albums i listen to most. If you guys want to listen to an awesome punk band then go to http://www.myspace.com/anewdayuk and i promise you that you wont regret it in the slightest. let me know what you think, or even better let the band know what you think. If you like bands like Strike Anywhere then this will be right up you alley. |

The list is endless but I'll name a few classic most played TSOL X Bad Brains The Misfits (1977-1983) DOA Circle Jerks Black Flag The Damned The Varukers The Exploited Some of my favorite modern punks are: The Casualties The Bella Bombs Fabulous Disaster The Sinkin' Ships Hank Williams III The Detroit Cobras (punk by default) Punk isn't dead, sometimes you just need Myspace to help you find it. It's alive and well but only a few cities can produce true punk anymore. You'll never find it on corporate tv or radio which are all owned by one single entity, the same that produce horrible Hollywood movies and popular/generic music. Also want to add that Jerry Only is a cocksucker. |

Thanks for having me. Yeah I love Fear. I also have The Decline of Western Civilization Part 1 which has some classic moments with Lee Ving. You've probably seen it before but if not you should definately check it out. |

I was considering about getting some Fear- what album should I start off with? Also, did Flea actually ever record anything with them? Or wasn't he in the band long enough? |

I don't know if Flea recorded with Fear, if he did it'd probably be on "More Beer". Somebody else here might know more about their lineup timeline. I don't know because I've only ever had "The Record" which is their first full length album and a good place to start. Also look into tracking down "The Decline of Western Civilization Part 1" for performances by Fear, X, The Germs, and Black Flag with Chavo singing. You'll have to torrent it because it's been out of print for 20 years and was only ever available on VHS. But anyways the movie has a great performance by Fear as well as a riot they start on stage with a punk chick. Also search YouTube for Fear's SNL performance in 1981 with Donald Pleasance hosting. Jim Belushi pulled strings years after he left the show (SNL) to have one of his favorite bands (Fear) on the Halloween 1982 show, which has also been removed from the archives due to it's disgusting seasonal sketches and vulgar performance by Fear. Great stuff, check it out if you can find it on YouTube. The episode in it's entirety is impossible to find, I have heard it was destroyed by the studio because it went over the top and offended everyone who watched that week. The Fear segment is on Youtube but is cut a tad short at the beginning. They do "Beef And Baloney", then say it's great to be back in New Jersey and go into "New York's Alright If You Like Saxophones" and then finish their set with "Let's Have A War" but it fades into commercial after the first verse. Apparently they opened their medley with a self censored "I Don't Care About You" which is also on Youtube but is a separate video from the rest of the SNL performance. Also anyone into early to mid 80s punk, check out American Hardcore on dvd. If you're looking for DK, Misfits, or Fear, you'll be disappointed but the film does showcase Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Black Flag and Minor Threat as well as a few other bands and gives mentions to several dozen other bands. Loaded with interviews conducted over 3-5 years. Based on the book of the same name. It's a good dvd, you can't go wrong. I think I paid $12 for it and the commentary track and extra videos it comes with are pretty cool too. |

American Hardcore's a great documentary. Keith Morris's interviews are great. The Circle Jerks also happen to be fucking great live, saw them in Philly in July. And no, Flea never recorded with Fear. The Record is the best place to start, followed by More Beer. I like the other two albums a lot, but most people don't. |

Flea was only with Fear for half a year at most, anything he recorded with them never got released. Good band though, I saw a show of theirs while holidaying with a love interest in the '90s, good times.

Damn, it would have been interesting to hear Flea in a punk setting. I know the Chilis have covered Circle Jerks and Ramones and stuff, but still. @C64: Yeah, I've seen some parts of The Fall of Western Civilisation on YouTube, but not the whole thing. You wouldn't happen to have a link to a torrent would you? I should probably get it myself, but- PM it to me if so. ![]() @FHD: 'Kay, I'll check it out. Oh the wonders of SoulSeek. I recently downloaded Fat Wreck's compilation album, Short Music for Short People. It has 101 bands playing 101 songs, most of which are 30 seconds long- 40 seconds the longest, 8 seconds the shortest, which is freakin' ridiculous. some of it is pretty good though, but Blink-182 still managed to piss me off. LOOK AT ME I'M SWEARING AM I EDGY YET fuuuuuck. |
