Just recently because a friend showed me the freeware game FreeCiv which is almost an exact replica of the popular Civilization games I've gotten very much addicted to and interested in the series, and since there's a brand new one coming out for the consoles (Civilization Revolution) and there's already a cool demo of it out, I was wondering if there are any other Civ fans out there, if so what games do you have and are you going to get Civ Rev? |

I'm not one for thread necromancy but since this was the only Civilization topic I could find, i'm going to post in it. As some of you may or may not know, Civilization Revolution comes out today and i'm probably going to plop down my 60 bucks to get it... even though i'm still entranced by MGS4... I want to try and make time to play this. Is anyone else going to get it? I have no idea if it's going to be region locked but if it's not, it might be fun to get some quick matches in with people on the forums, here. Personally, i'm getting it for the PS3 so, if you're going to get it and you feel like playing some games with me, post your PSNID here or just send me a FR to my ID which is: Comatoes. Anyway, I'll post my thoughts on the game after I've got some playtime into it, later. I liked the demo and I liked the original Civilization so, i'm sure I won't find any faults with this one. Here's a review from IGN. And here's a blip from Kotaku that was posted a while back. Basically, after reading the reviews, it looks to be a big "pick up and play" title that can be played casually. I'm not into spending days in front of my computer so I think the console version is a good option for me. I usually have 3 or 4 hours a day to play videogames (until fall classes come around) so playing a game of Civ every other night could be a nice diversion. |

Yeah I wanna pick it up ASAP as well but I don't know when. I read the EGM review and all three of those dudes loved it. I'll be getting it for PS3 as well so my PSNID is Yackemflaber, we shall conquer together or against each other soon! |

I've never found them fun, too slow and too little action. Always got bored of playing them after 1/2 hours. |

I used to play Civ on an Amiga in the early '90s, then Civ II on the PlayStation, never tried III or IV, I don't know why, I loved the series, had no idea this new one was coming out, the trailer looks good, so I guess I'll be picking up a copy when it comes out over here. |

I don't know about you but i played the civilization revolution demo and I thought it was mediocre. Definitively not worth 60 bucks and nothing compared to the pc games. |

True. I debated on whether or not to get it and it honestly racked my brain but I gave in and dropped my hard-earned money for this. Generally, any PC game ported to a console is going to be complete shit in comparison but in my case, my computer is on the fritz and my wife's computer is currently in use by... well... my wife. Basically, the only reason i'll get a console version of a game over a PC version of a game is if 1. my computer can't handle it... or 2. it's a game that requires you to sit for an extremely long amount of time in front of a monitor. In the case of option 2, I go for the console version because i'd rather sit on my comfy couch in front of my HDTV that's quite a bit bigger than my computer's monitor... that isn't HD. Anyway, moving on to CivRev. Whether it's shit in comparison to the PC games is, to me, irrelevant since I have not touched the PC versions... (as explained in my first post) ...so, when writing up my first impression review of this game, I won't even think about the possibility that the PC games are better. So, without further adooooooooo........... Civilization Revolution (CivRev) - First Impression Review Gameplay: It's fun. It's Civilization and if you like stategy games then you'll most likely enjoy CivRev. If you don't like slower paced games then you better get back to 'pwning' on Counterstrike version 1.234w/eidontcare. The basics are in place here: Single player mode... quickplay... scenario games where you have to deal with a certain condition and win under certain parameters... leaderboards... and mulitplayer. I haven't played the multiplayer, yet... as I would be classified as what one would call a "noob." Something that I thought was quite neat was the "Game of the Week" mode where, each Sunday, a new game with a different set of starting and victory conditions will be posted for everyone to try their hand at... leaderboards will show the best players of said game. Graphics: Do people actually pay attention this shit, still? Seriously though, the grahpics are quite colorful and it's a big departure from the games i've been playing for the past few months (GTAIV, MGS4) so it's kind of refreshing. The leader/advisor models are nice and the animations are quirky. It's almost entertaining enough to the eye that it distracts me from the rather annoying voice acting that basically consists of gibberish in different dialects according to nationality. Complaints: Umm... even in it's "scaled-down" console version the game is incredibly advanced and the learning curve is, to say the least, daunting. I took the instruction booklet to work today so that I could read it while I was working... here it is at the end of the day and i'm still not done reading it. A more important complaint would be one that should and better be addressed by Firaxis in a patch, someday: there is slowdown. In a game with graphics that are on par with games that came out years ago, framerate should NOT be an issue. It's not constant but every once in a while, when a lot of shit is happening on screen, it slows down for a few minutes... what's weird is that sometimes when there's even more shit happening, it may not slowdown at all. So... I don't know if this is an issue with my personal PS3 or if it's an issue with the PS3 version of the game or if it's something that can even be addressed in a patch or whatever but it's annoying to say the least... That's it for now but, all in all, i'll enjoy playing the game but the framerate issue is a peeve that will probably never sit well with me. |
