Well I am going with the FA-MAS French because is in the middle between fire power, lethal destance and power, a strong case can be made that because is never been combat proven is just a show pice, but I think is great rifle. The M-16 is kind of old and M-4 is does not have enough improvements to be consider a new model. Beside the french army´s assault rifle I like the new Tabor from the Irraelies, it has a very intersting design and some new materilas are been tested is this rifle. I´d placed this topic here because is a matter of opinion, but I might messed up. Edited by wolfie, Jun 23 2008, 02:08:48 PM.

It's Tavor not Tabor. I would have to say the newly mad Bushmaster ACR. |

The AK-47. This gun is durable in the cold, deasert, anywhere. It is probobly one of the more cheaper guns to make. Its easy to clean. It also has good power and range. This gun without a doubt has killed more people on this earth than any other gun because it is so widespread and easy use. Alot of the Ak derivitives are also decent. So yeah. Ak ftw. I would take a Ak over any M16 or M4 any day. |

Yup, have to agree: AK for the win. Sure, I can name 30 rifles off the top of my head that perform better than the AK under "ideal" conditions, but you throw them into muck, or bury them in the sand, and you're screwed. You got to tear that sucker apart and scrape it clean. An AK: you can cover it in shit... then all you have to do is clean out the barrel itself, and viola! You got a smelly, but otherwise brand-new, AK. For less than ideal conditions (just about every warzone...), AK is the rifle to go for. |

The Bushmaster ACR is the new AK. They combined everything that is good in British, Russian, American, etc. into one rifle. It supposedly as solid and reliable as any AK for only 1700 bucks or less. |

In terms of durability the AK series wins, but if you want an AR that has the best performance, M4 is your best bet. Also it is the easiest to customize. |

There's two kinds of people in this world, my friend...
|
As said before, the AK models are probably the best assault rifles ever made, but the M16 and the M4 models are not far behind...But if I ever was going in to a battlefield I would have chosen the AK instead of the M16 or M4. Why? Well the AK is durable, can be covered in sand, you can shoot with it underwater and it wont jam and it's easy to use too...Only problem with the AK is the recoil, which the M16-models beat the AK's on... |

This is one of those questions where there's no clear answer, because every rifle listed so far has its pros and cons. One is going to be suited to CQB, another would be a better range rifle, etc.. AK = Dirt reliability. As said above, you can throw it in the mud, muck, sand, etc, and it works. But isn't known for being the most accurate weapon in existence. M16/M4 = Known for excellent accuracy and ease of handling, low recoil. But can malfunction when not properly maintained. FAMAS = Not sure if this is correct or not (as I read it on an article that I don't consider 100% credible), but I've read that it has ammunition feeding and sight-allignment issues (which doesn't necessarily mean France wouldn't have adopted it). In spite of all these flashy new experimental rifles, if I were going into combat, my pick would be the battle-tested M4 with a 40mm tucked nicely beneath the barrel. Simply in terms of firepower, versatility, and customization. All those AKs are nice, but they're going to be pretty useless when I can reach out beyond their lethal range and pick off their owners like I'm in a shooting gallery. And the M16/m4 barrel does not drift upwards when shooting because the stock runs in a straight line from the barrel. One of the most accurate assault rifles you can get. |

I favor the M14 and its variants. Power and precision. And there is no "best assault rifle." The best one is the one that suits your needs in a given situation. |

Yeah, but the best assault rifle in general... You know, like the gun that has the best of everything. The one gun that would be the top choice when you enter a unknown battlefield in which there would be indoor fighting, outdoors fighting, through harsh weather and terrain. What would you choose? I suppose for me, it would either be the M4 carbine (due to its ability to be customized for it's purpose), the FN SCAR, Bushmaster ACR, or the XM8. |

Jeeeeeeesus.... I'm guessing no-one who posted here is British or if they are they have no pride in their armed forces! The SA-80 (which isn't as f****d up as it was in the 1980's) is an amazing assault rifle. I train with it weekly and it hasn't failed me ONCE. Have to say if i was given the choice I'd take an SA-80 over the AK-47 or AK-74 daily but if i was presented with an AKM then yah I'd probably take the AKM. |

The M14 technically classifies as a battle rifle. I agree with you on the second part of your post, though. In a perfect world, we'd have a rifle that can fire full auto, has ZERO muzzle climb or drift, and can kill your target from a mile away... But we don't live in that world. We'll never live in that world. |
