PS3 Care; Turning System Off
Topic Started: Jun 23 2008, 04:56 PM (208 Views)

Just a brief question from a new PS3 owner about caring for the system. When the system is turned off, is it better, worse, or no difference whether you shut off the main power switch or not?

I have so far been putting it to off/ stand by, then turning off the main power switch each time, but was wondering if there were any advantages as to system longevity to doing either?

Thanks

I don't believe I've ever turned off the main power switch at the back..

..I kinda elimates the purpose of being able to turn the console on by using the controller?

The power switch on the back doesn't really matter if it's off. Since I think most people don't do it, and like L Snake said over here, no controller usage to turn the PS3 on...

Lazy...

it states in the manual that you shouldn't switch it off from the back unless you are leaving the system for long periods of time which means more than a day (if you go away on holiday or whatever or just know you aren't going to be using it) or if you are unplugging cables (apart from ETHERNET and USB), if you play games several times a day or everyday then just leave it on stand by. something or other to do with electric charges in the system that if you actively switch it on and off from the back it may or will eventually cause damage to components in the long term.

I didn't see that in the manual. Any reference to which one/ what page?

Fighterplanes runnin' round my head.

The only thing turning the switch off will really do is mess up the PS3's clock.

Otherwise, leave it on standby.

If you leave it "on" - as in the system is off, but on by the mains and the switch is on, it will probably not have any long-term effects.

However, to save myself some money on the power bill I always turn off the switch and the console on the wall when I am done.

If you turn it off at the wall will you loose your time and date and personal settings?

Or is it like a PC and connects to a time server everytime you turn it on? (Probably not)

Edit > Whoops just saw a post saying it would screw the time up, my bad.

Mine accidently gets unplugged and the time stays the same o.0.

I usually switch my ps3 off while playing a game. Is that bad?

yes that is bad, you should quit the game first then switch it off. only attempt a hard reset when you have to, like if it crashes.

@spike88: make sure those accidental unplugs stop because they will damage your PS3 eventually as they cause power surges.

I always turn it off via the switch.
It is total bull-crap that is messes with the internal clock.

I have not noticed the clock problems when turning the console off at the mains.... hmm.

Currently my machine does not have net access either.

Regarding turning the machine off: Quit the game via the button on the controller, return to the system menu's and then turn it off via the controller again. Then flick the switch on the back of the console and then turn it off at the mains, is what I do.

The PS3 is built much like a small form factor PC, and has similar components. I'd say it probably has a internal BIOS battery (probably a cell battery) that is charged when the console is on, and stores the date and time when unplugged for short periods. It has to have some form of secondary power source otherwise its impossible to hold time with no power and network connection.

Or its just magical.

What is the proof that unplugging or turning off causes damage?

Wow, I do both no nos. When I turn my PS3 off, I do it while its still playing (not going through Quit Game first) and I also switch it off at the back and at the mains.

Old habits are hard to kick eh?

the thing is as del said PS3s are kind of like PCs now rather than games console, and turning a PC off while Apps are still running or just turning it off from the switch without going through "shutdown" will damage the machine in the long run, though unplugging it while its running will do more damage quicker.

im not saying turning it off from the switch will damage it over night but "in the long run" which is maybe a couple of years, and why do you need proof? just take good words of advice, if you want to keep abusing your system go ahead. i for one want my PS3 to have a long life so i would treat it accordingly. all the knowledge i have is from experience and observing how people treated their PCs and PS2s for the past 10 or so years in a manner that im doing the exact opposite of and i must say i have fully functional PS2 still and my PC is running fine while theirs are all broken or faulty.

and yes that clock business is bullshit, its not like the xbox or PSP and does not reset the date and time when the power source is cut off.

I didn't mean to sound offensive when I asked what proof.

I was just seeing if it was proved somewhere or if someone knew from experience, or if it was just urban legend.(like putting your console in the freezer) I dont turn mine off from the switch, and the only time it does get turned off is when it gets accidently unplugged, like 2-3 times so far, or when someone unplugs it to use the outlet.

Let's not raise our voices in here, eh... heh.

Naturally what we all think is best for our consoles is down to choice, and past habits.

The same thing applies to other common household devices, like TVs and computers. We could start a similar discussion based on those....

Well I constantly turn my PS3 off from the back every night and standby for the day. Just a habit I have. Had mine a year and one month so far and everything works perfectly.
