Lets give Raiden his dues; In all seriousness...

Its kind of hard to take peoples opinions on Raiden seriously now. Mgs4 has completely altered peoples perceptions of him. Anybody who hated him pre-Mgs4 is now singing his praises. I know there are probably some genuine Raiden fans, but its hard to spot them.

You're speaking to one now. I haven't played Guns of the Patriots. I don't even own a PS3, and I've been a fan of Raiden since the day I picked up Sons of Liberty

A valid point, but I'd much rather have played as Snake.

Still won't give him any dues, though.

Edit: Not like I'll hold grudges against Raiden fans or anything. Everyone has their own opinion, and that's just mine.

Although Solid Snake is my favourite character in the series, I think playing as Raiden in the Plant Chapter was fantastic. It allowed us to view Snake from a different perspective, improving his character, while also introducing another great character into the series. Admittedly, I never liked Raiden at first. But when I began to understand the storyline and the whole point of Metal Gear, you realise what a fantastic character he is. Seriously, I am over the "he's so girly" phase. Just grow up and give him a judgement based on his personality, not his fucking hair.

I second that.

People need to grow up and expand their view on the character, which was a great addition to the series. Though I dislike what they made of him in MGS4. He looks cool and strong, but that's about it. They (or Kojima alone maybe) made him a puppet, with no soul or character what so ever. Though I still liked his ending the best.
I loved the scene

I suppose I'm glad he was the main character in MGS2, but I still really, really hate him.

MGS2 was the first game of the saga that I played. I still don't like Raiden. Even now that he's become so cool and serious in MGS4, I STILL don't like him (he's a cyborg who wears high heels and nail varnish, for Outer Heaven's sake!!).

Interestingly enough, I'm a girl, so I am basically the target that the Raiden character was aimed at. But I don't like girly-looking prettyboys who spend all their time being emo and tragic. I like rough, manly, silent heroes like Snake. Heck, I actually find Old Snake to be STILL much sexier than cyborg Raiden so just guess!

Second note: Raiden, in Japan, is indeed a much loved character. It's us europeans and americans who kept making fun of him. And I'm damn glad we did. What if he had been a success and MGS3 had been about him instead? Eeeeewww, the horror!!!

Last note: people who only needed Raiden to be exagerately strong and undefeatable to like him, and so changed their opinions about him in MGS4, are people who don't seem to be interested in the character's personality. Because in MGS4, Raiden is still Raiden allright. As boring as he was in MGS2.

This said, I don't really dislike Raiden, I just don't want the typical japanese stereotype to replace a much more charismatic hero such as Snake.

I guess I differ from alot of people here when i say I prefered Raiden before he became a Cyborg. I loved the little camp hero. He was a welcome break from Snake, and it showed just how good at what he did Snake was. It also showed the MGS world from a new perspective, not that of Snake again. We are lucky we got to play as Snake at all.
As a cyborg, Raiden is alittle too flawless. Before he was hot, talented but couldnt cope with reality at all times. As a cyborg he's all those things and CANT DIE! Not only that, he becomes incredibly Nihlistic, which loses alot of his origional character. AND he found he had a son and Rose loved him all along. He was so much better single and camp. *le sigh*
Don't get me wrong I still love him to bits. I think we westeners should embrace the odd camp hero. We like Rambo and Plisken. Raiden is a great break.
Raiden = lotsa lurve <3

Stupid question now for all of you who hate Raiden. Why? Can you provide a valid reason as to your disdain for a character you only hate because he took away the opportunity to play as Solid Snake?

Valid reasons:

1) he looks girly, and I personally don't like that

2) he is always dark and pessimistic and complains a lot. Oh he does

3) his background story and the characters related to him (i.e. Rosemary) are boring

4) he's not very original since he embodies the Typical Japanese Brooding Bishounen Hero

2) Did you not pay attention to the early codec scenes with Rose? He was full of hope about that situation
3) War is boring?
4) So what if he does? He was designed by a Japanese man.

GraySnake182 has a point, he does deserve credit, as does HK for having the balls for replacing Snake, I think it was just the shock of Snake not been on MGS2 when Konami showed the trailers of Snake constantly.

1) Did I ever say that he's girly because he has long hair? No. He's girly because he's girly. I don't even need to make a point, just look at him. Don't deny the obvious (and as I said, now he wears high heels and eyeliner and nail varnish....). Also, Kojima himself stated that he wanted a "pretty" guy to be the protagonist of MGS2.

2) To tell the truth, I played MGS2 years ago, and I also don't remember it as well as MGS3. So you may have a point. I just vaguely recall that he was quite mopey and boring...

3) No, war isn't boring. But his background story is. In a way it's like with the Beauty&Beast units of MGS4: their stories are so campy and over-the-top that they give me no emotional response.

4) This doesn't imply I should like overused japanese stereotypes, right?

Oh, in answer to "Kojima had the courage to replace Snake with another protagonist". No, that was THE OPPOSITE of courage. Solid Snake has never been very popular in his country so he didn't have the guts to keep that original protagonist and tried to make a new more stereotyped protagonist to appease to the fandom of his own country (where MGS isn't quite as popular).

Children, fight it out in the PM system or in Offtopic forums. You're both right or wrong because it's just a matter of different opinions.

Raiden is amazing. He really is. Sure, he's a bit overly dramatic at times, but we can live with that. You've got to give him credit where credit is due, though. How many people do you know that could have

Lol yeah this is true and I think people jumped on Raiden quite harshly, just because of his girly features. Also because players who were familiar with the MGS series were too used to playing with Solid Snake and found Raiden to be a character that was beneath him even do Raiden's background is very intresting especially in MGS4

I don't think anyone is denying Raiden's skill as a soldier, just the fact that he's so damn girly.
bingo, he seemed abit to whiney to be in a metal gear game. I was disappointed that you only play as Snake through the tanker and not the plant.

very disappointed

He wasn't even as girly as everyone is making him sound! So he's a bit feminine! Get over it! I didn't realise so many Metal Gear Players were opposed to feminine-looking men.

Let them think what they want man ;) They'll be surprised how many gays they'll find here.

Raiden looked pretty normal to me in Sons Of Liberty.
