I'd suggest the Legacy of Kain series, even if it does get up it's own arse at times (but then again you should be used to that after MGS). It has likeable characters (something rather strange considering both Kain and Raziel are murderous backstabbing bastards) and has plenty of plot twists to keep you interested. Plus it has some of the best voice acting I've ever heard, including one featuring MGS' Richard Doyle. |

the first Blood Omen Legacy of Kain game had the best story, havent played the Raziel ones but have watched bits here and there. Snatcher has a great story, if you are thinking it's just a Blade Runner rip off you are mistaken. Xenogears had an awesome story, shame Xenosaga didn't follow suit. |

i cant believe only one of u have mentioned a silent hill. silent hill 2 has THE best storyline ever put together in a video game...u will be debating the story, months after the credits have rolled. the genius thing is...theres no right or wrong answer...its open to interpretation, like a lynch film. i highly doubt silent hill 2 will be topped with its story. unbelievable story that affected me deeply. however, chances are, 1st time through, u probably will not understand what the devils gone off...but, oddly u will feel all the pain and sadness ur main character goes through. a real deep and heartbreaking lovestory that delves into the dark parts of our souls. a one mans journey of self acceptance. truly shocking story. apparently, they had to remove many scenes as they were 'some of the most disturbing images ever put to a video game'!! one of the games producers has been in talks to try and get these scenes restored and release it as a special edition...i really hope that comes about. OH! and another one u should all check, 'Shadow Of Memories' from the creators of Silent Hill...its incredible! completly story driven. has more cut scenes then a MGS though haha but, the story is so interesting, u will be hooked and wanting to know what happens next all the time. Dude Shenmue one and two is a the closest thing to an amazing story as MGS. Only fucked up thing is Shenmue one is only on Dreamcast while Shenmue two is on both Dreamcast and the original XBOX. If you don't have those consoles then maybe with hacker searching skills you may find some sort of emulator on the internet. But yeah Shenmue is THE greatest story i've played next to MGS, it was way ahead of it's time and everyone should experience it. It's real sad they never finished the story with a 3rd installment because of financial problems. |

Half life does have a great story, but unless your paying attention, you won't catch it. Hitman's story is good. |

To add onto the half life comment, you could get half life 1, blue shift, and opposing forces for like 15$. And then you could find HL2, And its expansions for like sixty, with a 3rd expansion coming out soon, there is plenty of story to go through. I'd say it does have one of the best stories out of any FPS. Except for I haven't played bioshock so I dont know how it compares there. |

Final Fantasy 8 had a story that really caught my attention... Portal and Half-Life 2... I say "and" because when you play Half-Life 2 (including Episode 1 & 2, Half-Life 1 and it's expansions) you see the great story line... |

My personal favourite (besides MGS, of course  ) is action-adventure based game from (IMHO) one of the most promising studios, Quantic dream, called Fahrenheit. Most of Japanese games exported to "west" have a really good story. Final Fantasy series, Resident Evil, and so on. I also like narratives based on cyberpunk world very similar to that from timeless William Gibson's novel Neuromancer, such as those within (unfortunately) very short Deus Ex series.

Second Sight had an amazing story, such an under-rated title. I'd highly recommend it if you see it in a bargain bin (it was on PS2, GC an Xbox I think; I had it on PS2). It's made by Free Radical AKA the guys behind TimeSplitters. I also enjoyed the story in XIII but I never finished the game unfortunately. Hitman: Blood Money had a decent story as well. Two Words: The Darkness Can't believe I forgot to mention this one. The story is amazing, so is the gameplay. I highly recommend you check out this game. In my opinion it's the best FPS, in singleplayer, online pretty much sucks. |

All games i have played, and i have played alot, the storyline pales in comparism to the mgs series, it seems to be much more advanced in depth and thought about than any other game, most are beat the baddie and vs him at the end. but yeah. Final fantasy has an above average one but still pales to mgs. |
