Right, as you may or may not have probably guessed I am entirely computer illiterate. I know..nothing..about anything to do with mac or pc's. With that said the PC I'm on now is a piece of junk..It's running on 256mb of ram with like a 60gig HD. But now, I've got into University so I'm getting student loans coming through I am going to buy a brand spanking new PC..or mac. Which one should I get? I was reading macs website and the descriptions on the Macbook and iMac desktops are very persuasive, but then again I don't know if its worth the jump from a Mac to a PC, cause Macs are real expensive.. I just want something very fast and reliable, with tons of HD space and A GOOD AMOUNT OF RAM..ideally 2gigs or more. Generally for uni work (I'm doing film studies) listening to music, watching films/videos, playing pc games like Football Manager (do they work on a mac?) downloading stuff and a spot of video editing here and there if my course requires it..which I'm sure it will. My budget is about 800 quid. I don't care if I spend my full payment in one go, cause I damn sure won't be spending it on alcohol or drugs anymore..I just wanna knuckle down and do some work and just calm down a little (which Ive been progressively working towards since christmas, but this is a story for another day..) Bare in mind I want the full shabang. Meaning if I'm getting a PC or a Mac I don't just want a tower..I want a monitor, keyboard, mouse aswell..but obviously if I can get a laptop or macbook that won't matter. Yeah..so anyway..sorry for the long read..suggest away! Edited by Null, Aug 23 2008, 07:49 AM.

Well they're going to be very persuasive, not gonna say 'Hey, pretty much everyone uses PCs but buy a MAC anyway :D'. Don't buy a MAC.. why would you want one? Incompatible, more expensive for specs and less used so expect less support/help! I guess they're okay for GFX stuff (from what I've heard) but that's the serious stuff that I'm guessing you're not doing. PC 4 lyf.. if you don't like XP's theme compared to MAC's get Vista.. it looks good.. but I've never been bothered. Edited by Sybris, Aug 23 2008, 08:24 PM.

Not about looks, I'm not a trend whore. I'm just bamboozled by two sides saying one system is better than the other. Thought I'd gather some good unbiased opinions here..but I know alot of you are PC heads so that might be hard lol. |

Macs are well cool, but pretty expensive, incompatible, etc. like Sybris said. With 800 quid you could get a serious computer though; the laptop I'm looking at is £450 and the specs are better than the ones you're looking for. Also are you living in halls? If you're not living at home then it'd probably be a better idea to get a laptop. |

Nah living at home Alex. I'm literally setting up a working environment I've never had before through all my years of secondary and sixth form education - I've had to do my work leaning on an old couch arm. I'm getting a desk, some shelves and a new pc/mac so I can actually do work in a comfortable working environment on a decent machine. |

Man if your doing film then you obv gonna be doing some sort of production. iMovie HD says hello. I'll state my case for a Macbook with 2gb ram. It has all the stuff you need, You can install Windows on it via Boot Camp meaning you have access to games if you rly want. Mass loads of HDD Space. Superior editing. Gah. Everything about macs are perfect. I love mine and there is no way i'd ever go back to a Windows PC. So yeah. Get an iMac or a Macbook, Depending on your price range and need for portability |

Hmm. Well Monsieur Null, given your Uni course I'd have said what Mic posted regarding a Macbook or something along those lines. However, as you might have guessed I don't like Apple and wouldn't ever buy one myself. Your budget sounds fine for a pretty reasonable Windows or Apple machine, so no worries there. I think that Football Manager might be one of the few games that will work under either OS, so you are safe there too. Generally you really need to ask yourself what you prefer, what you are more comfortable with, and just exactly what you will be doing with the machine. If you will end up doing more video editing and whatnot then Apple are screaming at you to pick them. But if it's more non-video work like the web, games and whatnot then a Windows laptop/PC is your answer. |

I know nothing about Mac's and i dont ever intend on learning, just my personal opinion. I'd stick with Windows tbh, i know its easier to buy your own parts seperate but PC World can be reasonable, just had a quick look on their site and for example Spoiler: click to toggle that sounds pretty good to me, got the 2 GB memory you'd like and its got touch screen shit? so in theory one without that pointless fad is gonna be even cheaper and a lil off topic but i know you mentioned on msn that you'd like to dabble in a bit of PC gaming from time to time: ![]() where the fuck do you ever see games for Mac? i might be wrong, there might be hundreds but ive sure as hell never seen any where i live, HMV, Gamestation, Supermarkets etc. The PC in the spoiler tag might not be the best example but i'd have a good look at what else they have, probably all come with Vista though, yeah it looks nice but the first thing i'd do is format it cos lets be honest, 'shop' computers come with all sorts of shite that you dont need pre-installed on them, stick good ole XP on. Hope this helps man Edited by r0b, Aug 24 2008, 03:44 AM.

oh right fair enough and theres probably a lot more but i would of thought Windows has the most choice i've not seen the newer titles like Assassin's Creed, Gears of War or Bioshock with Mac compatability, i could be wrong but the way i see it is if your gonna buy a PC and spend hundreds on it, you wanna be able to do the most you can on it, whenever you want to. Up to you though man just gotta weigh up the pro's and cons and see which is gonna benefit you more

@r0b: It's half true regarding the whole PC/Mac game compatibility thing - naturally a very large percentage of games that are released for computer's are made for Windows machines, but a few select titles like Football Manager and Warcraft to name but two are fine for either, straight from the box. Also as Mic has said, there is software you can get for a Mac to simulate a Windows environment... which sounds interesting. |

Hmmm I'll have a look but I built mine myself so I can only recommend parts, such as the large hard drive you wanted, make it a Samsung Spinpoint, they are fast and have large storage, don't buy a rig with a WD cause they may be fast drives but have low storage space. Also, with video encoding, move making which I'm guessing you want to do, a dual/quad core processor would be ideal, preferably a quad if you can. I'll have a look around and try and match you with a machine. EDIT: Also, bear in mind a lot of computer retailers are cutting away XP to buy as an OS, so you may only get to buy Vista with your machine, which could cause problems if you don't have any XP install discs from old PCs at home. Vista = Shit You need a powerful machine to do things as fast as a mediocore computer does on XP. Really it'd be an idea to use the Boot Camp feature on Mac to install XP [Especially as that iMac I showed you has big HDD] |

I use Vista and have no trouble with it, folks get annoyed simply cause it asks permission for the smallest things, but I prefer that level of control and security. |

Vista isn't 'shit' but it's no way better than XP and the looks can be implemented into XP. I'd say DirectX 10 is one of the only things going for it but that's not really significant, doubt you're looking for AWESOME OMG EYES HURT LOL GFX. It is significantly slower than XP in some cases, games especially (check benchmarks all you patriotic Vista lovers!!). |

So would you say for example; Running on a Vista on a 2gig ram PC would be the same as running XP on a 1gig ram PC? Or does that make no sense at all? |
