I'll go with MGS4, I must say I was a tiny bit disappointed with MGS when it first came out because I didn't realise it would be so close to a remake of Metal Gear 2.

Metal Gear Solid 1 and 4 are on par for me. The two greatest games ever to be made.

For its time I'd say MGS1...was just, greatness. We knew what to expect from MGS4 upon release so its greatness wasn't as much of a shock.
Although MGS2 is last on my list of favorite games, I'd even say MGS2 was greater for its time then MGS4 is. I was simply amazed with the improved game play...I'd stand there and shoot guard after guard just because I was in awe of the way they died...the graphics and all that jazz.
Thats not to say that MGS4 isn't great, because it is imo the greatest game out right now. But for its time I don't think it matches up with its predecessors.

Metal Gear Solid for me. At the time of release it hit like bomb, came out of nowhere and immediately set the top standard for games on the first Playstation. Heh.. It even set a standard for a large amount of PS2 games out there.

Don't even think about using auto-fire, or I'll know.

MGS3.... because to me it was perfect in all its aspects. I liked the place setting and the character, and I liked the fact that it's the less technological of the saga.

Feck off!

For story it has to be MGS 1, it's nearly perfect when it comes to storytelling. The cutscenes and CODEC calls aren't too long and the voice acting is some of the best in videogaming (although one person in MGS 4 trumps them all in my opinion, yes him) with David Hayter and Christopher Randolph.

But for gameplay, MGS can't hold a torch to MGS 4. Going back is almost impossible for me now, in the same way that it's hard for me to play MediEvil after Resurrection.

But as far as storytelling and plot goes, MGS is still the best in the series.

While MGS3 my second favorite of the series, I don't think it made as big of an impact on gaming as the others did. It didn't add anything revolutionary or anything. Was just simply a sequel to MGS2 with slightly better graphics. The jump from 2-3 wasn't huge and ground breaking for its time.

If you asked me before the release of MGS4, I'd say MGS1, but now I prefer MGS4. Why?

I think MGS4 is the greatest of the MGS saga because Kojima and the production team took risks, they didn't just exaggerate in many aspects of the game, they took one step further.
Nowadays almost every game relies on Online gaming, DLC, etc. and it's like the developers don't want to take many chances (or they've been paid not to do so, take GTAIV for example, and you know what I mean).
IMO, MGS4 isn't just a great game because of gameplay, graphics, storytelling, etc. it's also because it breaks "the chains" of the habits (and needs) of a next-gen game developer.
Imagine what would be like if every game was as good as MGS4. . . Videogames would certainly be considered art.

For the stroytelling, I prefer MGS1, but MGS4 definitely left a mark in this videogame generation, and we won't probably see a game like this one for years.

well i haven't completed mgs4 yet, but I would say that mgs3 was greatest in the series (except for mgs4 which i still haven't finished) because it was my first metal gear game to play, and my friends kept saying it sucks so i didn't expect much, but then the incredible story, awesome game play as well the plot twists and especially the ending... It was all so magnificent and perfect. It seriously had a great impact on my life. And then I played metal gear solid 2 and it was amazing, but I was missing alot of things because i didn't play mgs1. So I went back and played it emulated on the psp, but there were problems in disc changing so i had to replay the first disc again on the PC, then there was an error so I replayed it AGAIN and it started to get annoying. And THEN i finished it but i already knew half of the story.

So, so sum it all up, it wasn't such a good experience with mgs1, so i prefer mgs3. Until i finish metal gear solid 4 that is...

MGS1 vs MGS4

Story : MGS1
Gameplay: MGS1
Soundtrack: MGS1
Voice acting: relatively even
Graphics MGS4
Replayability: MGS1

For me, it is a no contest.

Mgs1 is a classic... but was it a perfect reviewed game at THAT time? I don't remember  I wasn't into reading reviews and previews and stuff as I am now.
Mgs4 though was a game every ps3 gamer was looking forward too. Konami did a hell of a good job on the marketing part. But even though it gets perfect reviews I don't think it will ever get the status of mgs1. It will never be a classic
;)
But neither are mgs2 or mgs3 I think... Even though personally mgs3 is my favorite.

I think it was considered an instant classic even back then. I remember PSM (a swedish gaming magazine) gave it a 10/10 :)
