So, I've finally realised that the reason my computer is so fucking slow is because of the amount of ram I have. Literally I cannot run ITUNES, MSN and the FIREFOX browser at the same time because it just freezes up completley. I'm on 256MB at the moment, I'm planning to upgrade to 1GB because thats all I can afford at the moment. So can anyone tell me, will this make a noticeable different in my computers performance and speed? Or will I have to upgrade more for it to run smoother. |

I run AIM, Firefox and iTunes at the same time and I have only 512 MB of RAM and they run fine, albeit not as fast as I'd like. But my Mom has 1 GB and it's MUCH faster. It's a very noticeable difference. Also on my Mom's computer, I could download some big thing while doing all of that and the download still went mucho fast.

Upgrading the RAM of a computer in a case like this will really give it the extra kick that it needs - you will notice the computer will run much faster from the desktop and you will be able to run more programs at once. Any upgrade involving the RAM in a significant way like this and you will be amazed by the results. I recall one of my first upgrades, going from 128MB -> 768MB, and then on another build 512MB -> 2GB.. it was just so awesome. The only thing you need to be careful with, is that you buy identical RAM to what you have, make sure you have enough free RAM slots, (or just replace the current stick with one, 1GB stick) but you need to make sure that your motherboard will take it. The best way to check this is to oen your computer and to push down the white clips and to get the current stick out. On the piece of RAM will be a sticker; this will tell you the memory module size (256MB most likely) and also a code. The code is the important part. ![]() Let me know how it goes. EDIT: And be careful to hold the RAM by the plain edges and not the shiny side where it is inserted into the computer - else you could fry the chips which means you'd break it. Static kills! Yup Null, as krypton said, it will give it a boost, and allow you to run more stuff, faster ![]() I went from 512mb to 2gb and it was pretty cool ![]() How much you thinking of spending, I can find you some good prices, like 2gb for about £6 delivered. Do you know if your current RAM is DDR or DDR2? |

It's a decent RAM stick, but if your motherboard supports DDR2, I'd go for that. |

Um, that's rather slow ram.. 667mhz or 800mhz is where the real pay off is, especially nowadays when programs are very memory hungry (Firefox = awesome example). Although if you need to up your motherboard, then maybe something so it all works then just stick with that I guess. Yeah DDR2 667/800 mhz is the best for money imo. |

lol.. Listen guys, everything you are saying means nothing to me. I am a complete computer 'tard. So like I just said, it might not be top of the range ram because its possible my motherboard doesen't support it. |

Well Null, chances are that the current RAM inside your machine is the best speeds that your machine can handle. (1GB DDR-400 PC3200) If you would like to look into the possibility of getting faster RAM, run the following through your mind and tell me the answers if you do want to look into faster stuff: - Is the computer any good? (depends on age, and whether it was out of the box) - What will you mainly be doing on the computer? - What is your budget? |

No no no Krypton lol, I only have 256mb of ram at the moment. The ram I posted 4 or so posts up is the ram I am upgrading too. I've been told the most ram my computer can handle is 2gb. |

Yeah I know that's the upgrade, but you need to make sure that your current has the same figures or you need to find a manual for your motherboard (if it was self-built or a friend etc) or you need to find the box for the machine (if it came from a box) or perhaps the manufacturer's website, to see if the new stuff is compatible with your current system. |

Basically, I quoted my specs to a bunch of computer people. They said that ram would work with my computer. Thats besides the issue, I just wanted to know if it will make my computer run considerably faster. Thank you for the help though anyway. |

Hmm, if you could identify your motherboard for us we could find what spec and speed RAM you could use. But yeah, sorry for quoting a load of crap etc, well your going from 256 to 1gb, so yeah you should notice an increase in performance, simple as that, stuff will load faster and run smoother. Even 800MHz DDR2 is outdated now mate. I've got 8GB 800MHz DDR2 but its not in the same league as DDR3 1066MHz as far as tight timings go and overclock ability. |

As is most new technology. For people that already have a pretty decent [item] then the next one up will be a small upgrade, naturally. |

True say Krypton, which is why I usually skip a generation. I don't know about you. DDR2 will do me until DDR4 comes out. A 8800GTX will do me until a 10000GTX or similar comes out, keeping up with technology is impossible in the PC market unfortunately!
