I know I am. I'm sure things will get better but I'm worried for today and tomorrow. I know the majority of the people on this forum are young but has the state of the economy effected you or your family? It effected me big time. I got laid off at my job about 5 months ago. It was a good paying job. 19.50 an hour. I cant collect unemployment because it went slow and I wasnt working fulltime for a little over a month and a half. But that really didn't concern me to much because I was still DJ'n at a club making 350 a gig and a couple 100 at another bar. But then the club closed down. I don't really know why because I thought they did great buisness but the promo said otherwise. So I started applying to jobs on CareerBuilder. Went on several interviews but the jobs lacked so much in salary that it was a joke. So here I am now doing local parties at Frat houses. I dont mind it at all. But getting paid is not always a sure thing. There were a couple times I got beat. I try to collect money before the party starts but most of the time thats never an option. Most parties charge for a cup. I get paid after they collect there money. Its really been a struggle to pay my bills and its getting to the point where I may have to sell my car or bite the bullet and kill myself working for a low paying corporation job. Like I said I'm sure ill be back on top soon but when?
I'm also starting to look at this school T H E. To learn computer programming and how to build computers. I think its a good idea. I can still dj on the side and who knows maybe find a new gig.

Not really. Mainly because I don't really understand any of it. All I know is that Britain is supposedly in a "recession" and that that's bad, but honestly it doesn't seem at all different than a few years ago. I suppose my lack of understanding comes from me never really having to worry about money or employment, I've never been employed full time and I live with my parents.

Are we talking about the British economy or the US economy? Because the British economy isn't as bad as the BBC makes out, as for the US, it's not quite time to start worrying, but you're nearly there. So no, I'm not at all scared.

To be quite honest with you mate there's not much to speak of, a big bank lost a bunch of money so they nationalised it and petrol and food prices are through the roof, this has somehow given the media outlets the insane idea that we are in recession, it's funny how little they actually know about the country they cover everyday in the news. We're going through a bad few years, we'll have a good few years next. Anyway, you didn't really answer your own question, are you scared?

^^Give back my watch dammit!

I'm not scared, I'm simply not surprised by how shit the economy is getting.

Gas prices, inflation, mass increase on taxes, I'm not scared of it, I'm upset that it's only getting worse, but if we've managed this long, I think we can still manage, which is the main reason I'm not scared.

Though it does irritate me beyond comprehension.

Well yea I'm worried. My father has a his own business. Its been in the family now for about 55 years. Its a mobile home park. So far he had to evict 12 tenants in the past month. Which is a lot. He has 6 other who are about to become evicted because they cant afford the rent and are months past due. Who knows how many more are lining up in the future. The chemical company that I once worked for a year ago is rumored to close. The company that just laid me off is starting down the same path. Our biggest competition laid off 50,000 employees this quarter. In the plaza down the road to restaurants closed down. The bank down the road closed down. Clubs where Funk Master Flex and Dj Scribble performed at are on the verge of closing down. Maybe its just my area that seems like its going crazy.

Exactly

We're not in a recession, not yet anyways.

A recession is when theres two fiscal quarters of negative growth in a row

See the only problem here is confidence in the market and when that dwindles we have problems like the credit crunch and so forth.

The only question is when do we see confidence back?

I say.... late 2010

dJdC, my wife is an artist, for the last three years she's been voicing the same concerns as you, but nothing has ever come of it, to be quite honest anything like that, whether you're a DJ, a graphic designer, a filmmaker or a photographer, the threat of no work come is there everyday, luckily if you're good at what you do, and there's a market for what you do, you'll most probably be fine.

I'm sure they would like to have your weekly allowance and lunch money kisskiss but I'm being serious right now. When your paying around 750 a month to heat your home in the winter you'll be whistling a different tune when you realize you still have to pay the electric and the financing payments.

edit: Yea your right Jacob. My brother says the same things you tell your wife. But I cant help myself but think about it.

I haven't been affected by it yet, but I certainly do have my concerns. At present, I'm very interested in pursuing education and a career in the vast field of business. If the recession keeps up, it will be extremely hard to find a job in the field. The problem is that I very much enjoy business. No other academic class I've taken has caught my attention as much as this. I'm also interested in history, but that would probably be an even harder subject to pursue (besides the point).

Either way, I am slightly worried for my future. If things don't go right, I could be in a world of pain. On the other hand, my cousin majored in business and he's got a very good job right now.

Actually people fresh out of college have a greater chance of finding a job than a person who has a degree and years of experience. Your cheaper to hire than the other. Which is turning out to be a problem. Veteran Employees who had high paying salaries are being replaced by rookies to cut costs. Now the veterans are having a hard time trying to find a job that paid the same as his previous employer. If he cant his life style changes dramatically.

The british economy is in the shit because Gordon Brown served as chancellor for the last ten year and his abundance of screw-up's has brought grim times upon the british public. I think the greatest threat to employment in the west is globalisation with private industry being relocated in other countries where its a hell of alot cheaper i.e. reduced tax, cheap workforce which makes finding work back here increasingly competitive. Thats why I'm intending to follow a career thats in demand.

Well thank you so much Mr Brown for providing me with some sunlight today. (Clearly its silly what you say)

And no he isnt the cause of "all things bad" and that includes the credit crunch.

Well recessions are basically happening everywhere. Us Irish are having one currently although it wouldn't really affect me. The only way it'll make a large affect on me is if my Dad's company fails but he tells me majority of the finances so I know it's going well.
