I don't know what to say about Dell really.

Generally their machines are pretty shit and they aren't well made. I am informed that their customer service is crap as well. I have taken apart enough of them in my time too, so erm... not much goodness to come from me for this thread.

However - their XPS machines are supposed to be good. How has your experience been, and what was the price tag on that one?

Dell as people know it is more a business company than a home company, which is why you probably associate Dell with boring, entry-level systems that are bog standardly slow. However, recently they have came into a new market designed at the home user, and obviously as you mention, the gamer user, with the XPS.

I personally have no complaints with any XPS system I've ever owned, this one included. They all run flawlessly and can handle everything thrown at them. They are all well made and designed with tool-less entry in mind, hard drives snap into bays and expansion cards can be easily removed etc, all with your hands. Its a pretty solid machine this one, similar to the iMac really.

The price on this one was £2,600 at the time because its the flagship model. It sounds pricey but its decent value for money considering its specification.

With Dell you either love 'em or hate 'em I think, a lot of people prefer the custom market which is fine, but Dell XPS is custom now too really, you decide every part and you can upgrade at a later date.

It's still more expensive.. not to mention the horrid software you receive with your machine, although they may have stopped doing that now.

But asides from that, lovely computer you got there, pretty big! I love the way they advertise; 'H2C cooling to keep your computer cool in the heat of battle'.

Could be worse, I guess. :)

How old is the model then, or how long have you had it?

And yes, regarding your last follow-up to my comments. It was even funnier when Dell bought out Alienware back in 06... not sure if I cried or laughed. ^_^

Could be better though mate, it could have Tri-SLi in there but the thought of three 8800GTX's chugging away kind of puts me off. Not only would it single handedly destroy the ozone layer, it would also take up another two PCI ports, which means I'd have to loose the Sound Card and PhysiX card which lets face it, is more important lol j/k.

This model is still the current high-end, although now you can buy the XPS 720 (mine) and a newer XPS 730 version, which is similar but offers improvements motherboard/PCI 2.0/4 PCI x 16 etc and a better layout apparantly. It doesn't bother me, I'd rather have the XPS 720, I prefer the case.

Laugh! Laugh because its good! They made it better on the finance side, the Alienware team still make Alienware computers, only when you buy one all your money goes to Dell instead, so its all good to buy one if you dislike Dell lol. Have you noticed how HP are a total Dell wannabe? Dell buy Alienware, HP buy Voodoo. Dell make XPS, HP make Blackbird. They can't think for themselves.

Yeah, like when Sony were forced to pick nVidia when M$ chose ATI for their 360 graphics chip. ^_^

But you do see a lot of Blackbird's at gaming conventions these days... it means they are either good, or it means they won the contract with the highest bid, hehe.

They are really good (Shh you didn't hear me say it)

...but its just a custom built commputer...with off the shelf parts, only more expensive? You may as well buy the case, then the same spec PC and make a blackbird...save you a fortune.

Dell use after market products, like pimped chipsets and Dell only thermoelectric cooling that kicks ass!

Hmm anyway... ^_^

Generally I'd recommend the same to people, because you save so much money. Lately I am thinking about building another machine, (current is >18 months old) but at the same time I wonder how much it'd cost to get one out of the box. Lazy... hell yes.

My current one is a Dell, its not bad, not had any faults or problems with it that I can recall, its just out-dated now, with its Pent4, and 256mb DDR gfx card and a Dell locked BIOS -_-

But it does the job, my new parts will arrive Friday and I can begin building my new one, pics will be taken :D

Oh and a question, people make a fuss about fan noise, but I've noticed my current Dell is pretty quiet, just a faint hum and the hard drive squealing a little when I load things, what is considered to be a noisy rig, cause I'm not annoyed at all by those noises, in fact I feel better knowing I can hear it working and nothing is going wrong :)

Ahh the locked Dell BIOS, what a fantastic thing it is lol. I suppose in all fairness mate, it doesn't matter that Dell lock out the BIOS on systems like yours, its not as if your going to overclock your 256MB RAM and tweak the voltage on your Pentium 4 etc, but I can see how some people may feel like their getting a restricted system. You'd be suprised now though, Dell fully open the BIOS on their XPS models. Mine for example lets me change the Core speed, multiplier, voltage, overclock the RAM, Graphics cards etc, hell even all the built-in liquid cooling is monitored in the BIOS, and I can change the case fans and even the colour of the chassis lights. I'd say a Dell BIOS is now superior to a normal one! lol

Your're getting a new rig you say, what you going with? Intel over AMD and Nvidia over ATi I hope! Unless its a decent Radeon your getting, Nvidia normally beat ATi with its mid/high end cards.

Any advice you want just hit me up. Also you said 'Oh and a question'but you never asked one? Something to do with fans. You should hear an XPS boot up! :P

Why do you think I've got so much money? lol, working with Dell's help me to get things cheaper, I probably wouldn't own that beast otherwise lol.

Cute picture by the way, haha, my PC does not need more RAMS :D its got a full heard :D

Ah, no the 256mb is my graphics card memory, but its hypermemory so half of it comes from my RAM anyway, I stuck 2gb or 800mhz DDR2 in a month or two ago, but due to the locked BIOS it only runs at around 266mhz -_-, terrible.

But my new rig, yup you guessed it, Q6600 and a 8800GTS 512mb new version. Final parts arrive tomorrow, so should have it built then, I'll post a pic or two, it will be my first build so I'm getting a mate to do most of it while I spectate and learn what to do ;)

Its probably because the motherboard will be DDR? and you've put DDR2 in? I'm just guessing, I really don't know lol, but that poor RAM, it wants to move at 800MHz and its getting held back.

Ah, welcome to the Quad Core, DX10 club :)

You should get a DELL XPS 730, blatantly the best PC in the world right now, and you can get it with ATi Crossfire if you’re an ATi fan boy. Btw looks just like mine really lol

Posted Image

As for discount, no VAT and usually 10% so that’s 27.5% off :)
