Well, I mean you can go out and pay several hundred pounds/dollars on a graphics card these days, but you need to know the following:

- Your budget (!)
- Whether your current system will take it
- Your preferences (regarding graphics card manufacturer)
- What other kind of content the technology will be used for (aka, what you really need from it)

These are all very important points to consider, as a lot of old graphics card will still run HL2 happily for example, and if that's the main thing you'll play then it may not be necessary (again, depending on budget for example) to go out and buy the latest card for a shiteload of cash.

Let me know what you think.

"High end games like Half Life 2" ...lol.

I didn't know there was a high end version of Half Life 2? Seeing as my crappy old GeForce 7300 GT can run Ep2 on about max with a good 40 FPS.

I'd say if you want a decent GPU, make sure first you have a PCI/e x16 slot to put it in, and a 500w PSU to power it.

Crysis is the new 'high end' and even a Quad Core and Dual 8800GTX's struggle with that beast.

Makes the likes of MGS4 and COD4 look like Pong in relation lol.

@DB: Judging from your new sig (good one btw) you have SLI with the 8800GTX.... can you actually run Crysis on max on a huge resolution?

While we're here, what screen and res did you say you were using, again?

@theman515: Let us know what you think then.

EDIT: I can't spell.

Aye, I had a go on the new Crysis: Warhead at i34, simply amazing with the graphics and being able to shoot trees down and punch shacks apart :D

But yeah, post your current setup and budget like the others have said, you can get decent 8 series nVidia cards for around £140 atm, my 8800 GTS 512mb was £136 I think and I can run COD4 and Supreme Commander at native res on max video settings :)

Thanks for the comment on my sig, its what I use on Nvidia SLi Forums I just copied it over. Yup I have dual 8800GTX's in my main computer, (thought I mentioned that to you already?) and I have them in SLi mode when running Crysis.

Without SLi my system really chuggs along at around 20FPS at 1600x1200 in DX10 mode, so its basically unplayable. But Crysis is a game that benefits hugely from a second GPU, and it can almost double my frames in some places, to around 40FPS. So yeah, I can run it relativly smooth at a high resolution, but it also has to do with my overclocked QX6850, the extra 700MHz helps so much too. Basically my rig at stock settings would really struggle at a decent resolution.

I mean even 40FPS is quite pathetic when you consider I get 100FPS+ in every other next-gen game, COD4, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Gears of War, Race Driver GR!D, anything you want to throw at it, but Crysis is totally different, the mind boggles when you think about how the game must be rendered. Thankfully the Crysis sequal can apparantly be run smoothly on a 8800GT, so we shall see.

@ Shyne-Bright - I just saw your comment as was about to post this reply, could you tell us a little bit about the new Crysis?

Mmm but 1600 x 1200 to me is not that high.... I run things in 1920 x 1200 - how do you think it'd do? ^_^

And yeah, I think we'd all expect a Crysis sequel to be more optimised and whatnot; I didn't actually know it existed, so thanks for the news Shyne!

20 FPS unplayable? I used to get 10 FPS playing Forged Alliance with my single core and it was most definately playable, and man RTS's are even harder!

Wow, it might struggle a bit lol. 1920x1200 is a good resolution but I think its bordering being too high to notice, I bet if you ran at 1440x900 you could hardly spot the difference.

@theman515: Ah right okay. If you do need any help then or nearer the time, you know where we are. :)

Meanwhile we'll hijack this thread... *cough*

@DB: I love 1920 x 1200 so much... you should have seen my system *trying* to run The Elder Scrolls on max.... heh.

I think trying to run games at 1920 x 120 would take some pretty high graphics power, especially latest games.

I run everything at my monitors native res, 1680x1050.

Pretty sexy, but would you need to? :P

I think you already have the GPU power for any game in the next 5 years to run on max :D
