Big Boss

I've been thinking, Snake Eater is Big Boss' first ever real operation so expereience on the Battlefield and how to deal with certain situations/feelings were pretty green, hence when he said to the Boss at the start of the virtuous mission "You never taught me how to think like a soldier".

I believe Snake beating the Cobra unit represents how he was a mere child growing up to be this legendary soldier as he had literally been through and experienced total pain, sorrow, fury, fear of war and that's how he was able to defeat The Boss?

The bosses would usually come out with lines such as "I will guide you to a world of anguish beyond your imagination" or how the The Fear tells him how he's going to "give" Snake unimaginable fear as if they are passing on their emotions to him to take into battle and mature?

I also have a theory that all these emotions he had developed during Snake Eater given him the idea of Outer Heaven

So what are your thoughts?

was it really his first operation? :/
anyway. I think you're right, and him killing The Boss was probably the main thing that made him create Outer Heaven in later years.

about the Cobras 'giving' their emotions to him, do you think they knew what The Boss was doing?

I presume they had some sort of idea, i mean it was practically her unit and they have been on muliple tasks together and to randomly deffect to the soviet union? They knew her better than that.

Which brings out a good point, maybe the Cobra unit were also apart of the boss' mission?
Which makes them in my book look like the good guys.

yeah, that was I was thinking. cause as you said, they must have known her better than that. maybe they let themselves be killed too, like The Boss did? it would actually make sense, sort of. =)

I remember The Boss saying something like "you were always excellent at infiltrating urban environments, but this is your first jungle mission".

But the thought of his progression and his emotions through the mission mirrored by the Cobras is pretty deep. ^_^

Feck off!

An interesting theory. Although Snake Eater wasn't his first experience of war, he had previously served in the Korean war and whatever the Boss put him through in the ten years they were together. Although it was certainly his first official special operation (as it was for FoX). I like the idea that he experienced all the emotions of the Cobra squad rather than being afflicted by a singular emotion like each member of the squad (and the BatB) and that 'allowed' him to beat the Boss.

Don't tread on me.

The events of the Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater are what shaped Big Boss' character as we know it. I would not say he was "green" during these, but he was facing internal conflicts that he had never faced before and in a new, somewhat alienating environment.

How well do you live?.....In your Mind?

True, you couldn't call him a rookie in taht sense of the word. But he was in a new situation.

I remember when they talk about battle, they say something, when their talking about the Cobra unit they say that "It's the emotion that they carry into battle" It's what helps them or whatever the quote is. And Big Boss is exposed to all of them, and gets to learn all of their effects on battle, and fighting tactics. Meaning he would be able to divine what emotion/emotions HE might want to take into battle. So it's possible that he takes the combination and thus is able to beat and kill The Boss.

Very cool.

They were certainly a fine preparation for the final stand off. I always saw the Cobras as quite caricatured and as something one might see in a G.I. Joe cartoon, but in light of these thoughts and theories they take on a new depth.

thats just because they had so flat personalities, they were there just to be 'the bosses' in the game, so to speak. the character designs are incredible :)
