Google's Chrome Webrowser; Thoughts?

Chrome

So what do you folk think of Google's web browser? IMO, it's okay, looks pretty, but isn't a replacement for Firefox. ^_^ I don't like this homepage though. Showing off your recently closed tabs, recently visited websites ect. feels like an invasion of privacy.

I'm the least you could do, if only life was as easy as you.

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights that you already hold in Content that you submit, post or display on or through the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content, you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive licence to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content that you submit, post or display on or through the Services. This licence is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

To clarify: 'Services' includes Chrome (see 1.1), and 'Content' includes 'data files, written text, computer software, music, audio files or other sounds, photographs, videos or other images' (see 8.1).

Pretty much why I won't be using it.

Reading that has put me right off it - saw a friend on it earlier and he said it was alright.

Not too sure I can be bothered to try it because I love Firefox.

I mean, it's arrogant to assume I'd blog anything or do anything that google would find worthy to nick - but it's unnerving to know everything I do inside that browser is owned by them.

Mainly the people that should be put off by that are graphic artists, or budding musicians.

Wow, i'm in agreement with krypton.

After reading what Null said, I think i'll pass. I'm not in need of a new browser anyway.

I like Firefox and I don't want to be party to any more of Google's world domination plans dammit!

On a serious note: Things like this:

Don't tread on me.

That privacy policy is a big turn off for me. The Linux version is not out yet, so I have yet to try it to any extent. I may download it and do some petty things with it at the office in Windows, just to try it. Not that I'd think they'd take anything I wrote and claim it as theirs, it's just a matter of principle.

Aye, I knew Google stole into people's privacy, apparently they save and look at your emails if you use Gmail.

Also, on the news this week there was something about Google wanting more private info on people so they can adapt their questions to a personal level, now that sounds creepy to me, I'm staying away from Chrome.

That's a shame, as I like Gmail's interface very much. Meh. The amount of information about ourselves that we voluntarily put on the web might be enough that if totalitarian technocracy ever became a reality, it would happen quite swiftly. After all, we would have given them much of what they already needed, hmm? Too much anime? Too little sleep?

Because the privacy policy stated above is the exact opposite of the Linux ethic, I seriously hope it never comes to Linux (though it will), Google don't deserve it.

That's true. It doesn't really jive with most Linux users I know, myself included.

All this invasion of privacy on the web is just like what BT here in the UK got into trouble for lately... in theory the only other way of making serious money on the web is through targeted advertising though, right?

^ I'm extremely positive I was apart of that trial.

I remember changing my facebook status back in 07 to 'Henry is worried about how accurate the spyware on his computer is'' because I got adverts asking whether I wanted to meet Martin Scorsese, or get into contact with Robert De Niro and other similar things relating to my interests.

1.1 Your use of Google’s products, software, services and web sites (referred to collectively as the “Services” in this document and excluding any services provided to you by Google under a separate written agreement) is subject to the terms of a legal agreement between you and Google.

That looks extremely iffy. Really, common sense would say that it would be anything you upload on their sites, like Google Video or some shit. Too iffy, though.

Other than that, Chrome looks fantastic. The only thing I had a problem with is the fact that I can't scroll up with the laptop equivalent of the mouse wheel, although that I can scroll down. Hmm.

Basically they are entitled to everything you do through their browser, the sites you go on, the music you download, hell, even your bank details, I'd hate to think what kinds of harmful things someone could get from hacking the Google servers with Chrome on the go, and believe me I'm sure many will try, its a damn goldmine.

I think Google have since changed those terms - not surprising eh.

Think I read about it there earlier.
