I just started playing MGS3 and I have played the other three games and I can't help but feel that I'm in over my head everytime i start up snake eater. Any tips or tricks to help adjust to the third game cause I'm really having troubles with just about every aspect of the game. Getting spotted often and can't hold my own in a firefight. |

Read up in your manual on the controls and study the tutorials in the game. Use stalking, make your camo index as effective as possible for every area you come across and stick to cover, such as brush, as often as possible. The environment is quite a bit different and I too was a bit alienated when I played the game. As a matter of fact, it took me a long time to even go back to it to get used to it. When I did I found it to be one of my favorite games, however. |

My absolute favorite game. Bit wierd I admit when you first start. But when you start the game, first of get your best camera angle and stick to it throughout the game. Then, having looked over your manual start moving around, especially in that first area since there are no enemies there which gives you a chance to get used to the controls. |

Yes, the area at which you start is quite useful for getting used to the feel and controls. |

Are you talking about MGS3 Snake Eater or MGS3 Subsistence? If you're playing the latter I would do like TBDOOH said and find me a good camera position; which you can change any time for your own benefit. If you're playing MGS3 Snake Eater then I can understand how you might have trouble hiding. The old-style camera is more difficult to use throughout the game. Although, a first playthrough with the "new" 3D-camera in Subsistence can be a tad difficult to get used to.

its funny, when Snake Eater was still new, I thought the controls and everything was perfect and easy to use =P I'm playing MGS3 now (sort of) and compared to MGS4 its much much harder. the mk22 aiming for example was kinda irritating at first (I know real soldiers dont use laser sight, but whatever) you have to remember that MGS4 was so much easier than MGS3, you cant rush through every area like in MGS4 unless you know them inside and out and are aiming for a speedrun. take your time, and the grass/bushes are your friends, really. if you have over 80% while lying down you're basicly invisible unless they literaly walk over you =P |

Thanks for all the useful input, I'm definitely getting a hold of the controls and camera angles now. Still having a bit of difficulty on my CQC is the game pretty generous to how close you need to be to grab an enemy soldier? Wondering because i usually get about 2 steps behind one and even while using the directional pad as opposed to the analog stick they turn around and spot me. |

I had a habit of letting up on my stalking at the last minute that kept getting me caught when attempting to use CQC stealthily. Having a good and active grasp the camera and keeping up your stalking as well as projecting your enemies position based on observation of patterns is definitely important in successfully employing CQC and tactical thinking simultaneously. It sounds to me that you need to pay more attention to enemy patterns so that you might project what they are going to do and react accordingly, as you are apparently keeping up your stalking. I find the threshold for grabbing enemies to use CQC generous, with the right approach, if you get my drift. Practice approaches perfection. For each area, I advise that you engage in reconnaissance and quantify to the best of your ability the patterns of each AI. Effective use of your camo and in some cases binoculars will certainly aid in attempting such tactically beneficial deduction. The various tools for tracking enemy movement, such as the active sonar and the anti-personnel sensor will likely also come in handy.

If your just cqc slamming enemies to the ground dont worry about steathly walking up on them. If you are not in the sight range of another guard you can just run right up to them and push O while still pushing the analog stick towards them to knock them out. Even if they turn around you still have time to slam them. It takes them about a half second to realize its you so you have time to slam them before they get alerted. |

Actually you've mentioned a very important point here! Even though MGS3 is my favourite game (I prefer the substance version), It did take me awhile to learn to control Naked Snake, I had been so used to Solid Snake, who used to run everywhere whereas NS uses stealth as first-walk option (Without use of analog stick) - and as for CQC, well that just takes practise! Just mess around abit and you will acclimatize to the game. I find that even if I play one game for a extended period then I become used to that control-style anyway. |

When I first played the game it took me forever to complete. I was always hiding and running from guards. Then once you get the hang of it it really becomes more like the other games where you can run and dispose of guards easily. And you mean subsistence, substance is mgs2. When you get good enough you can try speed running as well. Speed Running |

Personally, I thought the controls were a welcomed relief after MGS2. For one, I found it incredibly unrealistic that Snake/Raiden could run around, full speed, on a hard floor and a guard standing two feet away from them wouldn't hear it. MGS3 took that irk and virtually eliminated it, and I found it now required much more skill and patience to silently disable an enemy soldier. Not like MGS2, where you could run full steam up behind a guard without him hearing, grab him, and drag him off, all in the blink of an eye. |

I found MGS3 quite hard to adjust to when I first played it. I had been playing MGS2 the night before (to get in the mood for MGS3's release the next day), and the controls and game play seemed really stiff (eg: Naked Snake's roll in MGS3 seems allot 'tighter' than Solid's does in MGS2). Also, I found it confusing on which trees you could climb (I got the impression you could climb all trees, and not just the trees with vines on them). The guards are much more clever on MGS3 as well (they pick up on footstep noise and knocks much better etc), so this was pretty hard for me at first I guess. I guess you just have to keep on playing. The game gets easier the more that you play, and also gets more fun. Just keep at it. ;-) |
