Well Ive been a huge MGS fan since it came out in 98. Ive played through the first one probably a hundred + times... I think everyone agrees that the thing that sets Metal Gear apart from other games is its great storyline. TBH, the story is about 90% of the reason I play the games. But unfortunately, Ive never had the chance to play mgs4 yet... So before i do that, to get everything out of the series, and fully appreciate MGS4, will I need to play Portable Ops?? Ive been avoiding it because i absolutely hate portable systems, but if it is a neccessary part of the storyline, Ill do it. I know it is basically a sequel to snake eater, but do they go into so much detail that i cant miss it without ruining mgs4? |

Yes, because it explains who and how the Patriots were started, as well as how Big Boss got the funding to create Foxhound. More importantly, it reveals one of the biggest twists in MGS3 you would have never have seen coming if you didn't play MPO. Trust me, it's a great story and very vital to MGS History. |

It sheds a bit more light on Big Boss, but not a huge deal, you encounter future members of foxhound (no spoilers?) and see the first 'stepping stone' for the Metal Gear concept. And you sort of see the formation of the Patriots I suppose. I wouldn't say it's ESSENTIAL. But it's still a good game with a decent storyline. Although for a MGS game I think it lacked a bit more, but then again, this is portable game. |

thanks guys.. i guess that means Im buying a psp tomorrow along with the game. haha and thanks for no spoilers, I hate when things are ruined for me. Someone accidently told me Snake died in mgs4 and i just about had a heart attack, although i guess it had to happen sometimes and i kinda expected it. Considering its a missing link in the storyline, I wonder why he didnt create this game on the playstation console though. oh well.. Edited by kappy0405, Sep 9 2008, 02:49:49 AM.

You may respond with "Yeah I know, I'm not an idiot." But for the storyline you want MPO not MPO+, you could buy both though MPO+ for online etc |

portable ops doesnt leave as big of a mark in mgs's history as the other metal gear games have but yes i think its worth it for sure plus it has online :p ops on playstation with mgs3 graphics would have been cool aswel with the online on it |

ya i agree.. if it really tells what/who the patriots are, let alone the first "stepping stone" for the metal gear prototype, then it seems pretty important. You would think kojima wouldve wanted it on the ps2. I guess Im greedy though, I still want him to recreate the original outerheaven and zanzibar incidents for the playstation too. |

Yeh i agree with kappy i think it would be rely good to recreate mg1 and 2 for ps3 with more in-depth story and characters also it would be awsome to see big boss and solid snake fight.
