Meh, what?

Do I have to fill in the form?
I don't really have a favourite author and I don't really enjoy reading books, they bore me.
I just write stories mainly when I'm bored.

<3 Deranged..........But Romantic Ringmaster <3

This sounds wonderful! Even though I personally prefer poetry, I love to read and write when I am feeling inspired or creative <3

But as this is for a short, I may write a short tragic story of some kind. I would love to enter for it now but I will be flying out Monday for a three-day conferance abroad and would hate not to be able to finish it. By the way, afew questions!

How long must it be?
Any perticular genre or can I pick or gain inperation from anything?

How long have I enjoyed writing: For around 7 years
What is my favorite genre: Horror, Thriller, Romance (can a writer limit themselves?)
My favorite author: Far too difficult. Probably someone like Stephen King, but again, can a writer limit themselves?
My favorite book: Don't have one

(Will edit when finished writing story outline and character bios)

EDIT:

Characters:

Jason Way: A young homicide detective who has, for the first time ever, discovered his own case.

Bob Lothario: The chief of police and a regular asshole. He is crude, angry, bitter yet highly effective.

Mark Way: Jason's older brother, a detective who has supposed 'visions' to find the answer to his cases. He has however an addiction to alcohol that he can't shake.

The Nine: A set of 'liberators' or murderers, who are killing innocents to prove a point to the government. They all wear masks to conceal their identity, and it is unknown how dangerous they are when directly confronted. They tend to be seen through Mark's visions.

Places used: Starting in New York, the Nine lead the detectives across numerous places in America, including Boston, Texas, Iowa and Yosemite National Park.

Storyline: Jason Way discovers two bodies lying in a back alley. It is quickly linked by paramedics to a number of cases known simply as the 'Liberate' cases, dead bodies who have been randomly dumped in areas of the city, and have either on them or the walls around them had 'LIBERATE' scrawled (often in the subjects blood). Jason goes to his brother for help, and it is revealed that Mark has begun to see them through his visions. However, due to his alcohol problem, he is next to useless. From then, the bodies seem to attract Jason, and messages are left for him directly. He comes closer and closer to finding the killers through their clues, and then is murdered by the group. Mark, hurled into depression at his brothers death manages to quit drinking and takes the case up himself, finally being able to follow his visions.

Beginning:

Liberate

A strong northern wind blew trash and pages of old and used newspapers about the street, and chilled Detective Jason 'Jay’ Way to the bone. He shivered, and pulled his heavy black duffel coat closer around his shoulders. It wasn’t enough, and he tried in vain to cut off the persistent cold by wrapping his red woollen scarf tighter around his neck, and he pulled up the coats long collar. Slightly better. Not far away now, he listened to the sirens closing in on his position, the loud wailing a crisp sound in the otherwise silent night. Adjusting his thick rimmed glasses, he again looked down at the two bodies he was standing over. One a man, he guessed in his late twenties, black suit and tie, posh, swept back hair matching the colour of his now stained suit. The other was a woman, slightly younger than him, white frilled dress. He imagined that the torn veil lying only inches from her was part of her outfit too. He shook his head and sighed, his mind already thinking over the possibilities of who, where, why and how. How? That was obvious. The blood stains on the woman’s white dress, and on the males white shirt, pointed to either a stabbing or a shooting. Where? He was tempted to jump to the conclusion of here, but that was too obvious, possible, but it needed more thought. Who? He had no idea who the two bodies could be, people from a fancy dress party, maybe even a just married couple. That would need research, just like why. Another sigh, just to his left, made him jump. His hand strayed to his chest, resting just under his coat on the butt of his baretta, as he wheeled. He looked into the eyes of Bob ‘the chief’ Lothario.

‘ That was one heck of a jump Jay, you piss your pants too?’
Jason hated Bob's patronizing, rough voice, and it always sent tingles down his spine. He hated being called 'Jay' even more.
‘ Sorry chief, you just…took me by surprise.’
Jason looked at the floor, away from Bob's piggy eyes. He felt stupid, he knew the force were on their way, he knew they’d gotten close. Embarrassment weighed on him, not just for the fact he had made an ass of himself, but more because he had let the well-built chief of police make an ass of him.
‘ Don’t apologise for it Jay, just don’t come cryin’ to me when you get buggered ‘cos you ain’t alert enough to watch your own ass.’
Bob paused for a moment, lighting a cigarette he pulled out of his coats chest pocket. He took a drag, and then looked at Jason sternly.
‘ C’mon then, whadda we got?!’
Jason shook his head slightly, trying to readjust his line of though to the case at hand. Bob may not have been physically agile, but his mind was, and he could skip from out-of-case matters to in-case matters as fast as the best runner in the world.
‘ Well…’
Bob bent down, looked at the two corpses.
‘Shootings…’ said Bob slowly.
‘ Or…stabbings’ stammered Jason, ‘there are puncture wounds over…’
‘No. Not stabbings.’ Bob rubbed part of the shirt between his fingers, and then fingered at the hole in the mans shirt.
‘What?’ Mikey tried to slow himself, all to obvious to the fact he was still stuttering.
‘ The rips in the shirt, it too random and circular to be a stab wound. And see that, the puncture goes a fair way into the body. I don’t want to disturb them yet, but if we turned em over I think we’d find it goes right the way through. Definitely not knife wounds.’
Mikey nodded, happy at least that one of his suspicions had been confirmed. He’d rest easier tonight, knowing he had been partially right on the first case he’d discovered by himself. To him it was a sign of him getting better, ‘climbing the career ladder’ as his parents had put it. He’d already been doing good, according to his older brother. He’d become a detective in half the time it’d taken his brother to become one, apparently do to his quick thinking and sharp reaction time, and even if he hadn’t just shown it, he was normally cool in difficult situations.
‘ C’mon. Jesus.’
Bob broke the silence like a stone breaks glass.
‘ Those Goddam paramedics were right behind me. I mean shit, they drive like fuckin’ O.A.P's.’
Mikey wanted to punch him. He hated his coarse language, and his lack of respect for anyone else, despite how hard they worked. The paramedics often bought the brunt of his crudeness, because they weren’t ‘real’ to him. They didn’t have a gun, and they didn’t have a badge. Therefore to Bob they were shit. Nothing more, nothing less, just shit. Like most people who were under him. That’s why working with Bob Lothario could be like working with an angry German Shepard.

Yes, that's a spring roll.

I don't really want to do the whole bio thing, but I have a story-in-progress I'd be interested in posting. It's pretty long atm- 30+ pages in Microsoft Word (and it's not really done either), so yeah. I agree with Fear on the poetry idea too.

I'm better at Metal Gear Solid than you will ever be.

I think we should have a poetry contest, too.
Yes YES YES!

How about we pick one out of a list of muses, then write when we are inspired for a competition.

Then if you want a longer competition the best ones can go forward to an elimination round where you have to write another.

^^
