It's been a long time since I bothered with computers, so what ever I say is most likely wrong.

A dll is a dynamic link library. It is what gets the computer applications to communicate with each other. (well, in simple terms it is. In fact, it's a lot different from that. It is a file that holds code to run one or multiple progammes, but in most cases a dll error is caused by dependency errors, in my experience.)

In any case, it could be either a missing dll in the chain, in which case you have deleted something you shouldn't have, or a virus is in your computer. Run a virus scanner, if that doesn't work, then I don't know.

Oh, and to help people out, download a startup list application from this: http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/ and paste the info here. I can't help you any further, because it's been a while, and I don't really know anything post XP.

If you've deleted something, you'll need to download the dll, and even then, you may have broken a chain.

Either that, or I'm talking complete bullshit. Also, you have one hell of a lot of applications open.

Firstly when that error occurs again press at the "View problem details" button and post what it says here or take a snapshot.
Press the "Check online for a solution and close the program" button and Windows will search for solution on the web. Don't do this unless you have a legit Windows copy. It's useful stuff. It helped me a lot when I was getting errors at first.

Now for possible causes...
  1. [
  2. You installed something lately and that's causing the problem. If yes unistall that program and see the results.
  3. You removed a program (some of them are prompting to delete some other files that are 'apparently' not used any more by the system) you deleted the files prompting which contained an important dll for the system.
  4. Registry error. Use a registry 'fixer'/mechanic to fix any errors available. (Link - you can also download and use any program you like - I recommend iolo System Mechanic 8)
  5. There is a virus in your computer that causes the RunDLL to malfunction. Use your antivirus software to scan your WHOLE PC, not just the C:\ disk where apparently the problem is. I recommend using many antivirus programs (not at the same time). Scan with each of them separately.
  6. There was a virus in your computer and you deleted it. The infected file though was a system file critical for rundll to operate.
  7. Bug or malware infected your PC causing the rundll or some of the 'kid' dlls not to operate. Use your malware remover program and scan the WHOLE PC again. (in case you don't have any... Lavasoft Ad-Aware 2008)
  8. As a possible solution boot from the Windows disk and use some of diagnostic programs inside. Use the repair Windows tool, it'll search automatically and fix any errors available.
That's all I can think of now. If I remember anything else I'll edit it in. At least these are all the critical manners.
Look at the possible issues above and tell me which one it is (if it's any) and then I'll tell you how to fix it.

It doesn't sound like a virus to me - assuming she has a decent virus scanner. ;)

Regarding the number of programs and stuff - computers can get a little messed up if their startup list is a bit overloaded, but what is open now shouldn't affect the computer, assuming it's a reasonable machine.

As he states, redownloading the .dll and replacing it will probably do the job - the real question is what did you do, or run that made the error occur?

Replacing a system critical dll (RunDLL 32 and the 'kid' dlls are really important) will only cause your system to malfunction even greater or even not boot at all. These kind of dlls contain different information on different PCs. Replacing or placing the dll will not do any good. Believe me... first of all I've tried it (with catastrophic results I must say) and secondly I have a degree in PC engineering and I am half way to my second one now. It's my job.

I don't recommend using this method.

Yeah, she did that. Then there were problems with putting the files in system32. Anyway, she used system restore and everything is fine now. Closure?

I have done this before with various critical system DLL files on various OS's and it has helped in cases where the file had become corrupt through to the mishandling of them by various applications - not by the user's fault for example.

And of course you have tried it - the best way to solve these things is to learn by doing if you're that much into it like myself. Then if you screw it up again somehow, you can just keep plugging away - it's fun.

@kkarbo: Perhaps because it's Vista. XP and before would give you full access to the system32 folder typically. During my upcoming next build I will be making a change to the dark side that is Windows Vista!
